How long is your mortgage for?

I am 30 and I’m concerned I haven’t bought my first home yet.

Thanks Smile

Bought a 2up 2down terrace at 23 when I was single think mortgage was 35yrs, then with DH we bought a bigger house together when I was 32 on a 30 year mortgage... we didn't use any money out of my house as we now rent that out.

We will be increasing our mortgage this year to build an extension but the length of term won't increase. We'll pay it off when we're 60 and if all goes to plan we'll both retire at 60. (We're 40 now)

25yrs old in the 90s for £75k Ealing, our first home.

TroysMammy · 30/03/2019 10:09
  1. Still in the same house, mortgage paid off a few years ago and no intention of moving.
Mememeplease · 30/03/2019 10:12

22 but that was in the olden days with 100% mortgage.

Mammyloveswine · 30/03/2019 10:20

26 and got a 25 year mortgage. We are desperate to move though so are currently doing our house up on the cheap to get on the market and hopefully move by the end of the year. Weve been here 5 years and 2 children later we need more space!

MadameAnchou · 30/03/2019 10:22
  1. 48 now, we're not in the same house, though Wink and 5 more years to go on the mortgage.
Numptysod · 30/03/2019 10:24

Bought house on own, 33.

Celebelly · 30/03/2019 10:46

25 but I had a gifted deposit

AnneElliott · 30/03/2019 11:00

Bought first flat at 19 with DH. It only cost £43k! Bought a house at 23 and last house at 34. Mortgage will be paid off in 10 years.

isthistoonosy · 30/03/2019 11:15

Bought alone at 25 paid it off over 8 yrs. That was five yrs ago.

Nowthenforever2019 · 30/03/2019 11:18

In 2011 when I was 24. Was gifted half the deposit by in laws as part of my partners inheritance which they gave him early so we could get on the property market

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 30/03/2019 11:20

I'm 39 and haven't bought yet.

abcriskringle · 30/03/2019 11:20
  1. Bought 3 years ago.
leafy22 · 30/03/2019 11:22

24

I started with a 25 year mortgage but have been over paying. We bought our family home 6 years ago and rented out my first home.

thefirsttimer · 30/03/2019 11:22

22 on a 35 year mortgage. Have just upsized significantly at 26, also on a (new) 35 year term.

Originofstars · 30/03/2019 11:24

20 but that was 1991 with 5% deposit on a £40,000 house

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 30/03/2019 11:25

29 in the early 90s. Endowments were all the rage then, so got stung, plus we've extended the term a couple of times.
Home Counties. Mega-expensive.

notacooldad · 30/03/2019 11:27

19 and by myself. It was for 25.
I got with Dp when I was 25 and lived in my place for 6 years before getting g another house and mortgage. We have 7 years left but I'm aiming to pay it off in the next 9 months.

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 30/03/2019 11:27

I bought an inner city bachelorette pad as a 26 year old. It was terrifying at the time of purchase but definitely the right decision and I loved living there. I wish I'd done it earlier and enjoyed more time as the queen of my own domain.

I've since bought a much nicer property with my husband, but I'll never love it as I loved my pokey freezing cold flat that I'd scraped to afford and that was all mine.

fluffylittleclouds · 30/03/2019 11:28

Shared ownership house at 19 then built up from then and bought a house ‘properly’ at 26

Babyroobs · 30/03/2019 11:36

I was 30. I'm 50 now and mortgage is all paid off an we own the house outright. We haven't moved or extended in that time though .

Alarae · 30/03/2019 11:37

22 in 2015, purchased a 3 bed ex-council terrace house in Berkshire for 260k.

25 in 2018, sold house for 325k, purchased 3/4 bed semi house down the road for 425k.

Mortgage is 280k, remaining term of 25 years. Hoping to shave a few off that with overpayments in the future.

mizu · 30/03/2019 19:28
  1. Bought last year. 7 years to save the deposit. 23 years mortgage Confused
Macaroonmayhem · 30/03/2019 19:34

Age 26, 25 years. Back in the glory days of 100% mortgages.
