How long is your mortgage for?

I am 30 and I’m concerned I haven’t bought my first home yet.

Thanks Smile

25, tiny poor quality flat conversion in medium priced area. 15 year mortgage, and the endowment eventually exceeded the predicted amount, although I'd moved several times by then - mostly due to poor relationship choices rather than climbing the property ladder.

MadamGrumpsalot · 30/03/2019 19:37

25 I think!?!

MoreSlidingDoors · 30/03/2019 19:39
  1. Sold at 28 which created large deposit for this house. Mortgage should be paid off by the time I’m 48 (it’s fully offset so just paying it down with no interest every month).
Shelbybear · 30/03/2019 19:46

I was 22, it was just before the crash 🙈 so we bought at peak and took out 35 yr mortgage.

I moved house a few years ago and it's a 25yr mortgage now with just over 22yrs left.

Would love to bring the term down but have young family and work part time so now isn't the time maybe in 5 years time or so I will.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 30/03/2019 19:52

19, early 90's. Terraced house bought for £28000.

whatamidoingwithmylife · 30/03/2019 19:55

I was 21 when I bought with my ex husband. I then had to buy his half when I was 32.

Mortgage was for 25yrs but overpaid every month so should knock a few years off.

We never had anything nice except an annual holiday, no treats, no nights out, no car - but it's worth it to be mortgage free by time I'm about 40.
Sadly won't make a mint on it if I sell though.

whyhello2 · 30/03/2019 19:55

I'm 29 and still not bought.

My husband was 21, we rent that.

Just saving just now so aiming for next year or 2021.

katycb · 30/03/2019 19:55

22 2004 brought by myself 2 bed flat in the North East so cheapish area. Met DH at 24 tried to sell and buy together -his first property at 27- couldn't sell flat so kept it as rental property and brought current house in his name...just accepted an offer on it and moving to new house our first joint purchase (36 and 38) soon fingers crossed. The benefits of cheaper areas are what you can get our new 5 bed detached in a nice area is 337k however things don't increase as fast we brought current house for 150k and sold for 165k 8 years later and the flat has hardly increased at all...still now that's our pension so might work out well in the end!

ChiefSpoon · 30/03/2019 19:57

21, currently 27

W33XXX · 30/03/2019 20:00

2010 at 21 with 10% deposit
Upsized 2013 with 10% deposit
Upsized again 2017 with 30% deposit + over payment due to going over the home report value. Mortgage should be paid by the time I'm 45 max.
Considering moving just once more!

We overpay on our mortgage every month. And buy in the same area which is popular, first house was complete renovation, second house had quite a bit of updating due to personal taste, and current house needed modernisation also.

Youmadorwhat · 30/03/2019 20:06

26 but we bought with over 50% deposit from money earned abroad.i think it was for 25 yrs but We sold at a major profit after 7 years and bought our second house outright.

bourbonbiccy · 30/03/2019 20:15

I was 21 when I bought my house. I think it was a 25 year mortgage. I have had long periods of overpaying and other times just paid what was needed. So probably knocked a year or so off.

Fingers crossed it carries on being a smooth ride, but I would say 30 is not old enough to be worrying you haven't bought yet.

LouB1990 · 30/03/2019 20:16

Oh wow! There is a lot of different ages, I was expecting most people to say 20s. Thanks for all your responses. I don’t feel too bad now x

I was 24 & DH 27, in 1989. We've moved & remortgaged twice since & will finally pay it off next year. It was different back then.

siddlydiddly · 30/03/2019 20:21

Was 22 bought it in 1992 with DH, mortgage over 25yrs moved in1997 to where we live now didn't extend the term of mortgage just the amount. Its now paid off.

mrsk28 · 30/03/2019 20:26

Haven't bought yet, currently 29. Putting together a deposit slowly so 32 is probably a realistic goal. Lived abroad for a few years and have been renting since, hence making saving slow 🙄

Also prices are huge in Ireland right now and I couldn't sign up to 30 years of massive repayments.

badg3r · 30/03/2019 20:26

If my closer friends, a few bought in their late 20s but most have only bought for the first time in the last 2-3 years. Now around 70% own and 30% rent. At work, most of my colleagues rent. I'm 33 this year. I think your situation sounds entirely normal OP.

yellowpolkadots101 · 30/03/2019 20:30

This thread depresses me!
I am 28 and it will be at least another 2 years before we can buy a house, we have been saving for over 5 years and had to make a lot of sacrifices to save!

Mummyshark2018 · 30/03/2019 20:33

I was 24 when I bought with now dh. Been here 12 years and just remortgaged to extend. 13 years left on mortgage. Dh is a bit older than me and the house we bought together was his 3rd house so he had accrued equity which we used when we bought together. If we were only starting out now (me mid 30's) we would not be able to afford our current house as our wages haven't increased as much as our periphery price gas. We're In SE area and house recently valued at being £445k (pre extension) which is crazy for a very modest 3 bed semi. I really don't know how people do it now in SE and other expensive parts of uk without help from parents etc.

WitBeyondMeasure · 30/03/2019 20:35

29 with my husband and three kids.
It's a 30 year mortgage but we plan to reduce that when I go back to work in a few years.

Mummyshark2018 · 30/03/2019 20:35

*property price not periphery gas!

SeventhWave · 30/03/2019 20:36

23, paid off.

Tattletale · 30/03/2019 20:38

I was 22, 25 year term, 9 yrs to go.

grumpymummy72 · 30/03/2019 20:55

I was 32 but because DH was 41 (his 2nd property) the mortgage was limited to 24 years. Paid off within 13 years thanks to inheritances and voluntary redundancy.

grumpymummy72 · 30/03/2019 20:59

South East by the way. Without DH, I'd still be renting.
