How long is your mortgage for?

I am 30 and I’m concerned I haven’t bought my first home yet.

Thanks Smile

I was 20. I'm now 24 and just bought my third and I hope final home!!! There is 33 years left on our mortgage.

We aim to overpay after we have finished renovating to reduce the years. Our mortgage is going to be 270k though 😤

Baby2namehelp · 30/03/2019 06:47

26 but bought in a cheap area, now renting in a different city and a landlord back in old city as can’t afford to buy in new city.

Sleephead1 · 30/03/2019 06:47

32 and a 30 year mortgage I'm 33 now so a long way to go

SamBaileys · 30/03/2019 06:49

I was 21..mortgage over 25 years..I'm 38 now. Rural Country Durham and we still live in the same house.

Specialkay1983 · 30/03/2019 06:51

First house 23, second house 32,which hope is our last home. Still 23 years left on mortgage but hoping to reduce this when remortgage in two years.

FrozenMargarita17 · 30/03/2019 06:51

I was 24. But we have moved and extended so the mortgage is about 27 years now I think.

ArtisanPopcorn · 30/03/2019 06:55

27, now 35. Technically have 22 years left on mortgage but will pay if off in less than 10.

But we'll have bought a bigger house by then so it'll all go out the window!

xyzandabc · 30/03/2019 06:56

27 with a 25 yr mortgage.
However now age 41 and mortgage is 28 years but house is worth over 4 X that 1st house.

Megan2018 · 30/03/2019 06:57

First house - I was 22 when viewed it and 23 at completion. On a 25 year term but since remortgaged it a few times, its now a BTL and had 24 years left. But will be sold before that.

Used the considerable equity in it to fund subsequent houses. Current house was mortgaged for 25 years at aged 40. But it only has 50% mortgage and intend to pay it off earlier.

anniehm · 30/03/2019 06:57

21, but the 90's were different.

FairyMoppings · 30/03/2019 06:58

And only because we were left a decent amount of inheritance by GP-inlaw to start us off saving for a deposit. Which took us another 2 yrs to build up to an amount that would buy us the cheapest house on the market in our area. Which is a run down ex-private rental property, of which the landlord sold because previous tenants had trashed it.

We'll be doing up our little trashed 'doer-upper' for years to come!

whiteroseredrose · 30/03/2019 06:59

I was 30 and bought a maisonette in Twickenham (deposit from DPs). Sold 2 years later at a profit and repaid deposit. Next house with DH at 33 and we're still here. Remortgaged to extend 5 years ago but should be mortgage free in about 4 years. I'll be 57.

Looked back at my old place in Twickenham a couple of years ago. My 4 bed in Hale is worth less than that now!

FairyMoppings · 30/03/2019 06:59

Oh, and our mortgage is for 30 yrs. Couldn't afford it on anything less

Zebedee88 · 30/03/2019 07:02

27, but I work down south and bought a house further up north. ...much cheaper!

Fizzytonicplease · 30/03/2019 07:03

37 just in the process of buying our first home.

richdotcom · 30/03/2019 07:03

24 years old, 30 year mortgage (with dh). We sold and moved after 4 years, doubled our mortgage and and now have 30 years left again 🙈

NChangeForNoReason · 30/03/2019 07:07

32 (2013) - i had been working full time professionally for 6.5y and had finally saved for a deposit

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 30/03/2019 07:21
  1. However this was what happened: Bought 1998 60k, sold £135, 2002 Bought (joint) £325 2002, sold £910 2018 Bought £1.13M staying here

Look at the price changes! We had a large mortgage in 2002, but only 3x joint income. Now we are mortgage free.

My age was the main factor, I earned well, but we bought after massive price falls and that was pure luck

hopelesslyromantic93 · 30/03/2019 07:26

We just bought our first house last year aged 25. Then our first baby came along 2 months later 🙈 our mortgage is 30 years but hoping to overpay and bring it down to 25. We are in the north tough so cheaper house prices!

torthecatlady · 30/03/2019 07:29

I was 24, dp (now dh) was 25. 25 year mortgage, South Wales.
We've been here 4 years, 21 to go but hoping to pay off sooner.

Nowordsleft · 30/03/2019 07:29
  1. Could never have afforded it in my 20s.
Ellabella989 · 30/03/2019 07:30

30 and we should be able to pay the mortgage off within 10 years when I reach 40 as we both inherited some money and were able to put decent deposit down and can overpay each month (we don’t have or want kids and we live in a low cost area in the Midlands and both have middle range salaries)

OneThreadOnly0101 · 30/03/2019 07:32

I will be mid to late 30s when I buy, but will be a cash buyer. Currently on an overseas work contract.

whitehalleve · 30/03/2019 07:33

29

BendydickCuminsnatch · 30/03/2019 07:35

23, in 2013, but had a huge (in my book!) completely unexpected inheritance. Most of my 30 year old friends are a fair way off buying without help, especially here in SE.
