I’m really enjoying doing this so far. Thanks for the tip for looking at closer odds. I’ve spent the last 2 days with a sheet of paper and the calculator trying different odds out and understand it much better.

I’m loving the free spins won £12.52 on William Hill and £15.00 on paddy power last night.

I need to make a account with Smarkets today as had no idea about paddy power owning Betfair.

Me and DH already have a sky bet account as we bet on football accumulators on Saturday usually 50p bet and same on both terms to score. Would it be with changing the bookies around and doing that on my other accounts as mug bets?

titchy · 03/04/2018 10:26

No don't do 50p mug bets! You want your betting activity to be the same more or less across all bets. So low stakes when your money at risk, along with higher stakes when there's a freebie going is a red flag.

Hello. I started this yesterday - signed up to PA and am £12 up. Taking it very slowly though as I have yet to open a new bank account.

I have two really boring questions, sorry Blush ...

(1) What’s the simplest way to open a new bank account to use solely for MB? Did you all use a different bank to your usual - and did they ask awkward questions? Does anyone have any recommendations for specific accounts?

(2) I have no valid photo ID just now; I don’t drive and my passport is out of date! So I am in the process of renewing it, but that may take a few weeks. It occurred to me late last night that bookies might not let me withdraw funds without verifying ID and might not accept my old passport as valid, and therefore maybe I ought to stop MB until the new one comes back?

But I’ve already attempted to withdraw £25 from Betfred (‘winnings’ from my qualifying bet). I’m kind of holding my breath waiting for them to ask for ID stuff. Do they do this every time for newbies - or is it normally triggered by larger withdrawals?

BarbieBrightSide · 05/04/2018 09:23

Hi 64, I have been asked for ID a couple of times just to open accounts, so you might come up against that at some point. Not sure about whether you'd be blocked from withdrawing.

Can't really help with the bank account one as I already had a second current account in a different bank which I have used for MB. I had to wait for a new debit card to arrive before I could start though.

64BooLane · 05/04/2018 10:08

Thanks Barbie. Earlier when I posted I’d done some feeble Googling and it looked as if all the options for new bank accounts were focused on ‘switching’. I tried again just now and managed to apply online for a new account at a new bank with no trouble. So that bit is done.

Now to tackle the passport. Feel slightly ashamed that it’s taken MB-related motivation to get me to sort it out!

shortaris1 · 05/04/2018 16:47

Hi 64, I've only had to send ID for 2 of my bookies so far. 1 being Mr Green which was a right old hoo ha!

I had a really good first month and ended up £802 in profit! Mainly due to a decent casino win and some bingo wins as I made loads of mistakes on the actual matched betting side. Feel Im learning now though.

I did the Ladbrokes bet £10, get £10 the other day and got £173 from that and £27 from the free spins when you bet on Champions League with them. Hoping to do well from the national too.

I pulled my own original £100 out at the end of last month so I'm just playing with winnings now.

So glad I started back.

I've told a few pals but one has been just gambling which is a bit scary. Did tell my mum as she often gives me cash to pay for things and I don't need it right now! Once I explained it she was just glad I'm putting money away.

BarbieBrightSide · 05/04/2018 19:51

Blimey shortaris, how did you manage £173 from bet 10, get 10?

I think I'm doing well if I get £8 return on a free £10 bet!

64BooLane · 05/04/2018 22:16

Wow, shortaris. Sounds like you're doing amazingly well although I don't really understand bet 10 get 10, or free spins, or in fact anything beyond what I've done so far...

I have to visit an embassy to renew my passport and can't do that until next Tuesday, so I think it will be some time before I have a valid photo ID to show anyone. Got the photos taken today. I have an undeniable extra chin compared to 12 years ago

Anyway it's reassuring that you haven't had lots of demands for ID. If bookies do request it and I explain I'll be able to provide it in a couple of weeks, hopefully they will be fine with that and not confiscate my funds or anything.

I've completed two signup offers, Coral and Betfair. My money is now tied up in liabilities until after Saturday's football. Next up will be Sky Bet, so I've registered but not added a card. I will wait for the new debit card to appear, and use that.

I keep feeling little stabs of worry as I'm about £90 down in cashflow terms owing to the deposits and liability. But it's OK. As long as it comes back eventually.

64BooLane · 05/04/2018 22:16

*Betfred. Not Betfair.

daytripper28 · 06/04/2018 07:51

Placemarking

Waiting on a new debit card also from different bank account and will start next week. May be on here asking questions re the casino and lottery stuff as have done matched betting before so will only be doing reload offers etc

Blushlove · 07/04/2018 15:37

I've been thinking about doing matched betting for a while but I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and try team profit tomorrow night when I've got a bit of time to sit down with the lap top and get it straight in my head! Tips for a newbie anyone?

username182 · 07/04/2018 18:57

Can anyone recommend any particular banks for second accounts? I've done a little bit of matched betting before but never as a habit, really want to get into it this time with the aim to make 200 a month as a minimum.

64BooLane · 07/04/2018 22:54

Well, it all came back Smile, and I'm £30 up (not bad for starting with such a small float) and have placed my Sky qualifying bet. This should be the last signup using my 'real' bank account.

I have bet on exDP's actual team. Will be hoping they lose so that I don't have to try withdrawing funds from the bookie. Grin

64BooLane · 07/04/2018 22:57

Blushlove, my top tip is to bookmark and read all the old MN matched betting threads!

user, I don't think it matters too much as long as it's a standard account without fees/awkward restrictions?

shortaris1 · 08/04/2018 21:24

Barbie I hit bonus rounds and it just kept coming! Delighted.

BarbieBrightSide · 09/04/2018 13:29

That makes me feel less useless! (I didn't realise it was a casino free bet and my £8 return was referring to sports bets)

I had a fairly good run on some slots with PaddyPower free spins (similar to you the bonus games kept coming through, although it was around £30 total), it's great when it goes your way, isn't it?!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/04/2018 18:24

About 10 days in and wish I had more time to get my head around the extra place for offers for the Grand National!

Would anyone be able to give a simple lesson? Apparently profits can be very good.

One blog I looked at seemed to say it was as simple as picking a few horses, laying them and keeping fingers crossed one came in. It can’t be that simple surely?

titchy · 10/04/2018 20:47

Extra places - back a horse each way. That means half your money on the win, half on the place. (Note - a £10 places each way costs £20!). The top 5 (for a large number of runners) will pay out in the place (around a fifth the winnings that the win would get). So if winner is 3.0 on a £20 each way, winner gets you £20 plus the £10 win part of your stake. 2nd to 5th gets you £4 plus £10 place bit of your stake.

Lay exactly the same as usual - there are lay place markets as well as lay win markets.

Where bookie pays an extra place, say 6th, you'll also get your £4 plus stake at bookies, plus, as the lay market is on standard places, you'll get your money back at exchange as well.

For long odds horses the profit can be huge!

titchy · 10/04/2018 20:48

So essentially you're hoping your horse will be in that elusive 6th place, hence why you back a few at different bookies.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/04/2018 20:59

Thanks Titchy I’d like to get to grips with this. I’ve joined om today and will have a play on their relevant calculator. Apparently it’s a good earner, plus if you get gubbed you can still do it. And on lots of different sports like golf. I wish the Grand National was a week away, to give me more time, I’m hoping by royal ascot I’ll be a pro.

I made £60 in my first week (last week), think I’m ok this week so far but have made a few errors along the way. It’s keeping me awake at night!

BarbieBrightSide · 10/04/2018 21:10

I think you have to accept that mistakes will be made while you're getting to grips with it all.

I made a loss of over £100 on a horse race, because I was in a rush to go and pick up children so didn't double check everything. I backed a horse and then because they were listed in a different order at the exchange, laid a different horse. It wouldn't have been so bad if the wrongly laid horse hadn't won - hence my big loss as I had to pay out at the exchange. (I could've coped with a £10 loss at the bookie)

That said, I'm new to it as well and seem to make very small amounts compared to some on here. Cheltenham was a good week, though!

64BooLane · 11/04/2018 19:17

I only just finished the William Hill signup offer and they have sent me another offer - bet £10 and get three £5 free bets. So I have just done the £10 trigger bet on a horse for tonight, at longer odds than I would normally have chosen - I figured it would be OK as I had enough in the exchange. The odds shifted as I was doing it and I tried to adjust - hope I've laid it properly ...

A few Grand National emails from bookies are coming in. I don't think I know enough or have enough of a bank to take advantage. Interesting though!

duggiehug · 11/04/2018 20:14

I've looked at extra places too but it looks a bit long winded where there are lots of horses running. Depends on what QLs you can get away with too so I believe not all are worth doing, though I could be wrong. I've seen some spreadsheets on the OM forum where people work it out. Might be useful for you, ThickAndThin

64BooLane · 11/04/2018 20:37

I read somewhere that extra places can be time-consuming and it wasn’t a discussion aimed at novices so I guess that means even if you are experienced, they take a bit of time and care.

shortaris1 · 12/04/2018 12:35

I've placed quite a lot of bets for today on the National but not extra places as the odds are never low enough and I've not made money on this yet!

I've done lots of get money back on X and Y offers so hoping for free bets for tomorrow.

What's everyone else doing?
