Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

    BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

    SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list
  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need
    FOOD
? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop
? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard
? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit
? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc
? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy
? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

    GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

    GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Aloveheart · 01/03/2007 21:23

grouchyoscar · 01/03/2007 21:25

Great tips! Esp the buy on a credit card one.

I saw a thread like this around Xmas and I thought I would knuckle down...Pleased to say I used some savings to pay off the joint account overdraft it was DH payday yesterday and we were still in the black! First time in years!

That's saving £30 per month in bank fees. The cash wasn't making that much interest in savings.

Plus I have managed to stash £200 away since January

Is it OK to join?

Aloveheart · 01/03/2007 21:27

£200 that's good well done!!

charliecat · 01/03/2007 21:28

Oh yes, sounds like youve been doing great
Wombling, btw is my new strange obsession, with heading to Tescos and going for the trolley with an old reciept in it, hoping it has a barcode on it so I can go to customer services and get the unused points added to my card
Its addictive...I often womble more points than Ive spent in Tescos myself

Good idea to start again as so many people in same rubbish money situations

Bananaknickers · 02/03/2007 16:26

Blast I have a balance of over £1000 on new credit card. That is it. I am going to cut it up tonight and pay it off as quick as I can. I have really gone off the tracks and I am not going to any more. Lucky it has 0 % interest at the moment

Bananaknickers · 02/03/2007 16:26

That has been spent on the food shop and glasses for me. So it has not been sqandered as such

charliecat · 02/03/2007 16:33

£1000 on food shop and glasses, bloody eck!!!!
I have gone astray today, completely, my hoover is about 3 years old and dying, but I love it, and its been abused daily and still sucks like a maddy, but the filter is holey and the engine will die of dust one day, so i saw it today for 40 and put it on the CC....BUT Its a jolly good hoover, and I will need one, and if I was going to buy another it would be that one...so im leaving it at my mums till I NEED it.
I also booked scooby doo live for 4 of us, for 40 too But my mums paying half of instead fo easter eggs..and the kids rarely get treated, so it will be a great treat for them.

Does seem alot how long is that for??

Jelley · 02/03/2007 18:27

Hi, I was on the old thread, but haven't checked in for ages
I am still adding to my £1 tin, so we have "days out" money in the schiool holidays.
I've put all my credit on one card with 0% interest, and am paying as much as I possibly can each month.
We were spending less than dp earns (need to save up for a big tax bill) but he decided he needs a £300 drill this week so I've had to take money back out of the savings.

I think we are still better than before Christmas, so I'll just keep on doing my best.

no wine left as drank it the other night.. only alcohol is a bottle of champers I'd been saving and a bottle of JD but nothing to mix it with.. lol

Jelley · 02/03/2007 19:07

Yes it is for work. To add to the 6 or 7 he already has. I have suggested he sells some of the others to fund it, but doubt he will. He hoards tools.

Jelley · 02/03/2007 19:08

Jelley · 03/03/2007 07:35

not really likely to go down well with dp.

I have catalogues, which I've paid off [smug] but when I checked the old bills, one of them had £30 cashback owing (I remember saving it for Christmas, then not finding anything I wanted)!
I've ordered new bed sheets for us
