charliecat · 01/03/2007 20:48

Following on from this thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Am thinking of getting that Martin Lewis book as it sounds useful. Still well in the clear this month whereas this time last month was already in serious trouble. Although DH insisting he needs new football boots and socks , he just does not get this money saving getting out of debt thing.

charliecat · 06/03/2007 10:04

Argghhh KG...get the money book from the library
Martin Lewis says theres two side to the money thing, like a coin.
You can be in debt and pay the bank to be, or you can be in credit and get the bank to pay for for it.
Its a good book

I will do it cc, but my computer is playing silly games and won't let me enter any info at the moment.

Car is due MOT next weekIt will need loads of work, and anyone who remembers how much dp spends on petrol each week won't be surprised to know that KwikFit want £150 a tyre

nikkie · 06/03/2007 20:33

is there noone cheaper?
Remembered my car tax is due soon (haven't had to buy any for 6 years!) but its not a high bracket so should have enough from my ebay money

charliecat · 06/03/2007 20:42

Do you know what the tyre is? It should tell you on your last reciept for the 150 tyre...google e tyres, they are highly recommended on moneysaving.com and come and fit it to your car at home
They are also cheaper than kwikfit etc.

I have an MOT next month...head in sand

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 06/03/2007 20:57

My MOT was £100 more than I expected I borrowed from DD

We had our barclays "goodwill" payment today (I couldn't face courts etc even if it was much less than our total) - it has payed back the money owed the DC (they had both loaned us money over the last few months...), and left us about £120 which I think is meant to go into the business.

I hope you manage to get your tyre cheaper!!!

I kind of forgot the ebay challenge

Bananaknickers · 06/03/2007 22:02

charliecat · 07/03/2007 10:06

Went past my hairdressers today and they are offering cheap deals for people to have their hair done by trainees, so am going in 2 weeks!

Also sold some dvds and some books to secondhand dvd/book stalls on the market.

Managed to do a lot of shopping there today, big bag of chopped veg for soup £1.20 and will do 8-10 lots by the look of it and also bought loads of cheese for £4 (nice stuff too!)

bumptobabies · 07/03/2007 20:26

ooh i could do with tightening my belt too.
i have a £1000 overdraft and have never concidered paying it off, i wouldn`t know where to start. i also have a debt of £4000 and i pay it of at wait for it dont laugh £20 a month, im slowly realising that i am not as good with money as i thought!

charliecat · 07/03/2007 20:36

We are all eating marvellouslly well on £60 for 4 of us, I have been doing a bit of ebaying, think ive made about £78 today Thats was after saying i was giving it a wide berth.
Hello Bumptobabies, you will be paying off that debt till your in you grave...surely the interest is more than the £20 your paying?
Can you swop it to a 0% and throw a lot of money at it by stopping buying magazines, coffeee etc?

My mum brought me a cup of tea today!! so that saved a £1 or so.

Do you think you can get addicted to spending money??

Been to tesco's today with someone, he he cc.

oh also brought a book from a charity shop for 80p . But got a envelope for a old mobile and get 500 green points from tescos told my mum and she's gonna get one too, so sort of saving the planet a tinsy bit.

Unfortunately i can't do ebay sell or buy as i dont' have a cc card or a debit card, so can't make any money . Oh well.

Well done cc on your £60 for four, i sadly went above that figure. cough cough.

nikkie · 07/03/2007 21:31

nikkie · 07/03/2007 21:39

American Express its a nectar one so I use it (supposedly) for food and petrol then pay it off at the end of the month collecting nectar points and got a bonus for taking out card too, just lost the plot over Xmas

Aloveheart · 07/03/2007 21:40

huskygirl · 07/03/2007 21:41

hi everyone me and dh are also working on reducing our debt and have found some great advice on this thread, so thank you!. i have just been looking on a website for freebies for pregnant women and phoned up today to reduce our sky package from skyworld - 42.50 per month to a 4 mix package - 18 per month. well chuffed!!!

Flamesparrow · 07/03/2007 21:55

Everyone is doing so well!!!

kirstygem · 08/03/2007 09:29

Aloveheart I think you can easily be addicted to spending money as its just such an easy habit to get into.
Think could be few of us on here getting addicted to trying to save money though
Feeling quite uneasy as still doing really well this month and my calculations for rest of month seem to suggest we will have money left over. Not used to this and feel certain must have missed something major
