Are you worth a £1million?

DH & I used to be quite good at keeping an eye on our financial affairs until the kids (8 & 5) came along. Since then, we've bumbled on through, just about remembering to stick lumps in ISAs and PEPS, paid off bits of mortgage etc, but not done any active management or review.

Anyway, a number of 'life decisions' prompted us to go to an IFA for a total review. By way of preparation we had to fill in load of summaries of investments/ house prices/ mortgage etc.

Well.... we sat down with him today and discovered that if we add up the net equity in our house (value minus mortgage) and all our savings and investments.... we are worth £1 million

I am truly gobsmacked - it has sort of crept up on us.
The bizarre thing is that we don't feel rich or anything - I use coupons and codes for shopping and regularly buy and sell on eBay. And yet I am a millionaire

well I don't have a million pounds but I don't see what the problem is for people that do have money

same snippy comments when anyone posts about an expensive holiday "what? £5k ARE YOU MAD etc etc"

good for you Moneybags

I have led a charmed existence, I may start a thread so you can all hate me too

no bad jobs/relationships/life events
happy home
nice house
great childhood

Tortington · 21/02/2007 15:41

no OO shut it immediatley.

oliveoil · 21/02/2007 15:41

lotrl · 21/02/2007 15:42

You live in Oldham.

Tortington · 21/02/2007 15:42

s.h.u.t i.t.

ledodgyDave · 21/02/2007 15:42

pmsl

oliveoil · 21/02/2007 15:43

yes but that is not my fault
I have sacrificed my love of deli's and culture for my children

expatinscotland · 21/02/2007 15:43

I'm naturally thin and never have to work at it.

So's my wallet, tho .

lotrl · 21/02/2007 15:47

So you moved to Oldham for your children? Don't people move out of Oldham for the same reasons?

oliveoil · 21/02/2007 15:51

I live in a (nice) bit of Oldham as that is where my MIL is and houses are cheaper.

Therefore I could work p/t and not pay childcare and not have a huge mortgage.

I don't like it

Where I used to live is ££££££££££££ for a house half the size

flutterdave · 21/02/2007 15:52

Well I don't see anything wrong with this thread and I always get angry at those "I earn £1000000000 an hour but can only afford 3 holidays a year poor me" type threads.

I say congratulations you are obviously suprised like this and by the sounds of it didn't realise your savings were adding up so much.

I know when I get to my 40's I still won't be worth a miliion but I do hope to be stable and content.

Keep cutting out those tokens and you never know what you could be worth come retirement.

lotrl · 21/02/2007 15:53

You WORK???? Have you no shame? You work and you choose to bring your children up in Oldham to live and work amongst Oldhamers and be doomed to speak in an Oldham accent for the rest of their lives!

I suppose you'll tell me next that Chadderton is the 'nice' part of Oldham you live in!

ledodgyDave · 21/02/2007 15:54

Oh to have mystery savings that you forget to keep track of. I'm happy if I find a fiver in the pocket of an old coat. It's only happened to me once but I keep checking.

oliveoil · 21/02/2007 15:54

they are having lessons to speak RP

itsmeNDaveP · 21/02/2007 15:57

I would be worth considerably more than £1m if DH died.....

noddyholder · 21/02/2007 15:58

I would rather be naturally thin so expat is richest imo.I am fat and skint could it be worse?

expatinscotland · 21/02/2007 16:04

There's a nice bit of Oldham?

Tortington · 21/02/2007 16:05

nope

lotrl · 21/02/2007 16:06

There is actually, it's the road leading OUT of it!

Tortington · 21/02/2007 16:11

yeah - and not the one that leads to manchester

lotrl · 21/02/2007 16:18

Good grief no!

drosophila · 21/02/2007 16:30

So now you have discovered you are worth £1million are you going to live a little?

oliveoil · 21/02/2007 20:20
