Are you worth a £1million?

DH & I used to be quite good at keeping an eye on our financial affairs until the kids (8 & 5) came along. Since then, we've bumbled on through, just about remembering to stick lumps in ISAs and PEPS, paid off bits of mortgage etc, but not done any active management or review.

Anyway, a number of 'life decisions' prompted us to go to an IFA for a total review. By way of preparation we had to fill in load of summaries of investments/ house prices/ mortgage etc.

Well.... we sat down with him today and discovered that if we add up the net equity in our house (value minus mortgage) and all our savings and investments.... we are worth £1 million

I am truly gobsmacked - it has sort of crept up on us.
The bizarre thing is that we don't feel rich or anything - I use coupons and codes for shopping and regularly buy and sell on eBay. And yet I am a millionaire

Curse that OO - so annoying when people say what you want to say but better

danceswithnewboots · 22/02/2007 16:26

CROCS expat...now there's NO excuse for that...

expatinscotland · 22/02/2007 16:27

I got raked over the coals for that one, dances . But I stand proud! In my pink Croc's. Needless to say, MamaG-shoemavan and cod came out with guns blazing .

danceswithnewboots · 22/02/2007 16:30

hehe...and rightly so young expat. So how are your feet smelling in those crocs?

Creole · 22/02/2007 16:38

hey guys, your advice needed on the "pick your brain thread"

Pretty please!!

expatinscotland · 22/02/2007 16:40

That's the myth about Croc's, they don't make your feet smelly or sweaty.

handlemecarefully · 22/02/2007 17:36

It's simplistic to assume that those who have posted reservations about this subject matter and have labelled it crass or tasteless in some way are 'bitter and twisted' or envious.

I thought it was crass and have said so - but I have no reason to be bitter and twisted about money..

I'm afraid I have to be crass now to make my point. Last weekend I stayed at the Lanesborough in the Buckingham suite - you know I have no inclination to tell people this. Only a few of my friends know where I went and I have downplayed the accommodation and talked about what we did in London. It would have been crass and distastful to flaunt it in front of them - and insensitive in some cases.

southeastastra · 22/02/2007 17:37

i saw someone in hot pink crocs yesterday they looked groovy

danceswithnewboots · 22/02/2007 17:38

OOOOOOOOooh, hmc is soooooo posh...did your butler post this for you or did you manage it yourself

handlemecarefully · 22/02/2007 17:38

Not sure about the crocs - think they look odd. Probably showing my age.

handlemecarefully · 22/02/2007 17:42

No he's gone off duty

I'm not posh at all. Very nouveau. But have good solid working class roots and good manners so try not to flaunt 'stuff'....

Only posted that point, with some reservations, because it was irritating the assumption by some posters that the motivation for not liking the topic matter raised by moneybags was purely attributable to envy and sour grapes

Oati · 22/02/2007 18:04

on Mumsnet it is a the height of vulgarity to mention having lots of money, but at least 50 of us are quite happy to chat about how to wipe your ar${e}

Fantastic

NotQuiteCockney · 22/02/2007 18:59

Eh, we do fine for money, although to be fair, we spend it on mortgages, building works, and school fees at the moment.

And yeah, I find this thread crass, too.

tigermoth · 23/02/2007 08:00

catsmother, I think your posts have been spot on. If the discussion had gone as described in your 15:10:21 message between fanstaticsurprise/amumsnetter - I agree, it wouldn't have seemed insensitive, just someone happy with their surprise good fortune. I mean, if someone came on mumsnet over the moon about winning the lottery they wouldn't be given a hard time, not even if they mentioned a figure. (would they?). I agree with bossykate that as a rule, mentioniong an actual figure is a bad idea on mumsnet. And there are probably quite a lot of mumsnetters here who are worth quite a lot or set to inherit quite a lot(inheritance tax permitting) just by being in the right place at the right time and being born or marryint into into a property-owning family who have made money in the last 30 years. Even I can say I have a lowly toe hold in this group.

But did I see further down that moneybags deliberatly wanted the thread to be more contentious? Well, no surprise that her views have been slated by some people.

Sorry to bring this thread to the forefront again, but I just thought catsmother's posts were so good!
