Should we give in and get married?

I'm not married (but 'coupled' for 12 years) with one son and another on the way. Just spent several weeks recently going through all sorts of legal hoops to clarify our relationship - getting a will made, signing a parental rights agreement, looking into pension rights, next of kin agreements etc. - all stuff that would just be sorted if we just got hitched.

Dislike all of the historical baggage which goes with marriage - even the words husband and wife get my back up - but wonder if it wouldn't be easier just to go down the registry office grab two stangers off the street and get everything straightforward.

Any experiences, attitudes to share?

hey daddog, have you had a vote to vote on whether to have you put your marital status to the vote yet?

Daddog · 07/01/2007 19:45

Suzy, think we've come to a decision, which is to get hitched! Maybe one of the strangest marriage announcements ever...

Everybody say congratulations.

BuffysMum · 07/01/2007 21:59

Strongly suggest you just go off and do it and save the stress and hassle, and if you don't tell anyone in rl I'm glad you at least told us.

fennel · 08/01/2007 09:32

If we ever do it I will expect everyone to commiserate with us and will only have witnesses who know it's not a positive choice for us.

so commiserations, daddog

maybe so daddog,
but when the chips are down it will be easier for you or missus..
dont do it with heavy heart, it can be your own thing too you know...

dr creamcheese is very much in this mode right now, so i make great joke of all the flowers, cars, marquees, dresses, that am NOT hiring buying etc..
i dont beleive in doing anything like this w/ miserable disposition, think you might regret that bit..

expatinscotland · 08/01/2007 15:29

It's not the worst thing in the world, Daddog.

You might even find you rather like it.

fennel · 08/01/2007 15:30

Exactly, MP. Noone congratulations you for taking out more life insurance, or updating a will, which is basically what marriage would be to us if we did it.

suzycreamcheese · 08/01/2007 17:33

fennel, might surprise you go on tell them and ..the insurance company would at least celebrate..
not much joie de vivre here guys
