Thanks again trinity

I don't understand your answer to question #2 though... I understand what they are doing - according to you - but not why they are doing it.

It's economically speaking completely irrational to sell a product with £5 profit if you can sell it with £10 profit, for example.

Thus, your answer implies that there is insufficient retail demand at the suggested retail price - otherwise no-one would think to cut their margins.

slgsue1979 · 14/07/2015 06:59

Morning all, I would just like to thank you for waking up my normally savvy common sense and brain cells!

I have been feeling quite low and really fed up with current situation and am looking for a way out of current job, it is when people are off their game that they become prime prey for FL.

The one on my FB feed is a mental health nurse but never at work, not at the NHS anyway! I feel bad for a girl from netmums because she has borrowed money to buy her kit in April and hasn't made the money back but no one is offering her any support or advice just the products will speak for themselves.

It's all very sad really. I am just happy I have escaped with my mind in tact!

xenu1 · 14/07/2015 07:52

sigsue I'm happy that you escaped with mind (and wallet!) intact too!
Do u have a link to the netmums thread?
wrt ebay, Amway tried desperately to stop exbots selling the "motivational" tapes on ebay - charging £5 for a 10p weekly tape was of course a major revenue stream for the upline and kept the bots under mind control.
www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Amway/bunnell.html
But you can pick them up now for pence. They are morbidly fascinating (for me, anyway)

FL don't seem to do tapes/cds(?) but copy amways expensive meetings

trinitybleu · 14/07/2015 08:06

Forever think of it this way ... you're on the high street, looking to buy a mascara. Boots and Superdrug are next door to one another. You see Superdrug are advertising £5 off the one you want. Which shop will you go into?

The fakes / lower priced ones will attract the current Rimmel / Maybeline customers. I aim for the MAC / BareMinerals customers, especially as they will probably also buy more than just a mascara every 3 months.

Some people will baulk at £23 for a mascara or £30 for BB cream. Others won't as they appreciate the quality. That's the same for any product. I don't get why anyone would pay more than £20 for shoes, but lots of people do ...

Eyespying · 14/07/2015 08:18

slgsue1979- You can also see why vulnerable adults who have temporarily fallen for the comic-book 'MLM' fairy story, have usually preferred to remain silent.

Amongst the most-frequent British and American contacts via my Blog, have always been teachers, medical health professionals, military veterans and police officers. Recently, I've also had a couple of British professional footballers.

All these people have wanted to thank me for confirming their suspicions about 'MLM,' because they have been approached by relentless colleagues, and former colleagues, reciting the familiar recruitment script.

A reliable source has confirmed to me that a significant minority of British pro-footballers (not star players) have been falling for 'MLM' when they have had to face the trauma of retirement due to injury, and/or advancing age.

Eyespying · 14/07/2015 08:57

ForeverLivingIgnorance - I'm sure you have realized that, despite what trinitybleu claims, 'MLM' racketeers have always tried to prevent their products from being offered on the high street (i.e. the free market).

You can't find 'MLM' products in traditional, supermarkets, chemists, discount stores, etc.

Once you know how 'MLM' racketeering functions by luring victims into a dissimulated closed-market swindle, the reason for preventing 'MLM' products from being offered on the open-market, becomes obvious.

Sorry if this is not allowed but that is the link to the FL thread on the other site. I haven't given up in looking a finding something that will suit me and my family as I have genuine reasons for needing to improve our income. The lines I am now investigating are those that don't irritate my family and friends on FB or in person but the possibility of starting my own online shop using Amazon and Ebay, but as I say I am still investigating.

I find it abhorrent that these MLM schemes are in effect bullying people and using peoples struggles as a way of making money. For me I wanted to read some negative views as I cannot believe for a second that a product/company has none which led me to these threads on mumsnet and am really pleased I did as I would have signed up this week when I got paid!

My personal advice to people looking at this scheme is research, research, research and don't let your heart (for me it was feeling guilty about saying no) rule your head!

Eyespying · 14/07/2015 09:29

Xenu1 The 'FLP' racket has been essentially identical to the 'Amway' original, complete with 'motivational tools' peddled to the constantly-churning pyramid base (comprising millions of would-be millionaires) by a tiny minority of exemplary shills, via (apparently independent) corporate structures.

Hoppinggreen · 14/07/2015 10:03

That Netmums thread is heartbreaking and shows how truly horrible these schemes are.

ForeverLivingIgnorance · 14/07/2015 10:36

Ok, thanks trinity

So what you're saying is that some Presenters try to compete with their colleagues by - illegally - lowering the prices. This is the opposite from how things work outside Younique, because there, it is mostly illegal to fix prices and encouraged to have competition lead to lower prices for consumers.

That said, if my fellow Presenters are de facto competitors, then why on earth would I want to recruit more?

lazycoo · 14/07/2015 12:05

slgsue thanks for coming on board - it's so good to hear that this thread is raising awareness. I agree that the fact you have to really dig deep to find criticism of the various MLMs is telling of itself. These rackets are astonishingly cynical. I really hope you find a source of income that works for you soon. I'm sure you won't find the answer with a MLM.

My FB sometimes creaks under the weight of people asking for recommendations for good cleaners. Or catsitters/ dogwalkers (particularly at this time of year). Both minimal outlays, both let you be CEO of your own business Grin. Not 'easy money' but does such a thing exist?

MarthasHarbour · 14/07/2015 12:33

I have just read the NM thread Sad

I was struck by the NMer who had borrowed money from her parents and was worried she couldnt pay them back Sad I am tempted to join NM to back up PamelaD and tell the poster to cut her losses and get out.

Interesting cryptic # update from my FLBot:

#saynotonegativity

Wonder if someone has told her what everyone else is thinking ie. she's stupid for giving up a salaried job for FL when she's got 5 children to support

lazycoo · 14/07/2015 15:16

Norbert I read that as #saynotogravity

Which is equally as sensible as any MLM proposition.

lastuseraccount123 · 14/07/2015 17:19

ha ha!

read the NM thread. :( .

agree with FLI that Younique's need to fix prices is weird to say the least. I really wouldn't be surprised if some of the women scammed into buying a kit with the promise 'products will sell themselves' and then discovering it's not true do in fact flog the stuff on ebay.

side note: I'm not really getting the appeal of super thick spidery lashes? is this a thing now?

lastuseraccount123 · 14/07/2015 17:23

that's the other thing I don't get, from a business perspective.

the make-up marketplace is super crowded with competition

the 'wellness' marketplace is also super crowded with competition

there's a very good chance 90% of your possible market already has access to products that do a good job, for less money, at a store/online. so why would anyone come to your launch party unless they felt some personal tie to you?

there's nothing unique about Younique.

or FL.

trinitybleu · 14/07/2015 17:52

lazy lol ... cos gravity holds you back. Just think what you could achieve without it!

trinitybleu · 14/07/2015 18:04

last all make up companies bring out new products / formulations all the time. Younique is no different on that aspect. People are sometimes loyal to one product for a time, but most are trying something new all the time. You only have to look at the beauty blogs and groups to see that.

And yes, the current trend is for long, thick lashes or to wear falsies everyday. I personally don't go for that (the amount of makeup some of the girls at work wear on a daily basis amazes me, let alone those who wear 3 pairs of falsies for a night out Shock), but I like wearing 1 or 2 coats of Y, rather than 3 or 4 of other brands to get some lashes to show (very short / pale lashes naturally) cos that saves me time and money. I sell to people aged from 19 to late 50's. The younger ones layer it up massively, the older ones don't.

My lashes definitely aren't spidery!

Eyespying · 14/07/2015 18:14

lazycoo - You are probably too young to remember, but the so-called 'Natural Law Party' fielded dozens of candidates in the UK election of 1994.

Part of the 'Natural Law Party's' tragicomic manifesto, was saying no to gravity.

lastuseraccount123 · 14/07/2015 18:24

fair call trinity. i am very lazy when it comes to make up - a bit of tinted moisturizer, MAC blush and maybelline eyeshadow and i'm done.

reading the Tropic Plant skincare thread on NM.

www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/working-childcare-692/working-yourself-self-employed-76/wfy-self-employed-chat-clubs-501/894739-tropic-pure-plant-skincare-discussion-2.html

-lots of ladies pumping for more team members - same as Younique thread - gotta have that downline to make money fleece suckers

-this quote makes me giggle:

More importantly though, people are beginning to see that there is an alternative to commercial products and one that's affordable and cruelty free!
seriously? what year is this, 1956?

lastuseraccount123 · 14/07/2015 18:25

oh, and the NM mods keep coming on and telling them all off for recruiting. But, mods! if they can't recruit they can't "work from home"
