You don't need one of these so called specialist firms to do it.

I have received an offer of £4221 from M&S in the post this morning.

All it took was a letter asking for my original signed application and then a claim form.

I started the process on 30th October and received my offer today for the cost of some paper and a couple of recorded delivery envelopes.

I am still waiting to hear from a couple of other lenders but what a fantastic start to the weekend.

Busters I've just filled in two forms - Barclays and Nationwide, both credit cards that I don't have account numbers for but I've given as much detail as possible.

Interestingly, Barclays sent a second (repeat) form yesterday with a note to say, they'd noticed I hadn't returned the first form yet. I was obviously not quick enough for them - they had asked me to reply within 10 days.

More interestingly, at the top of my form is their reference number and then another long number which looks suspiciously like a credit card number so, they have tracked me down already I think. Good sign I hope! They can't wait to offload my cash can they?! Grin

Overtiredmum · 16/05/2012 19:52

I am at the end of my PPI journey, but happily we have received about £35,000 in cash, had another £10,000 knocked off an existing loan, which has also reduced our payments by £150 a month.

We will be completely debt-free by the end of the year.

If you haven't thought about doing this, I really urge you to. We were in dire straits and towards the end of last year was contemplating another year of scrimping through - but we are getting there and have spare cash at the end of the month now!

BustersOfDoom · 16/05/2012 19:52

Well that does sound quite promising! From what I've learnt about this complainst process I would assume - but I may be wrong of course - that if you didn't have PPI on that CC then they would have just sent you a letter saying 'we've checked this account number and you did not have PPI.' Cheeky sods though demanding a reply within ten days - they have 8 weeks to respond!

I'm happy to PM you the exact wording I used if you want but it might not apply to your circumstances so might need tweaking.

BustersOfDoom · 16/05/2012 19:58

Wow Overtiredmum that's amazing! It must be a huge relief!

I was gobsmacked at being offered £9,400 and I know there is potentially another £8,000 or so to come if the other two complaints are upheld and possibly my credit card balance being halved. It will make so much difference. I was really, really starting to worry about finances.

And yes, everybody should check. Lots of lenders just added it on without even asking so people might well not be aware they were even paying out for PPI.

Overtiredmum · 16/05/2012 20:30

We still have a little to repay, but it is very manageable compared to what we had accumulated over the years. We are certainly very careful these days and know that we have been lucky in getting this money back.

We have treated the kids to a weekend to Chessington in a couple of weeks time and managed to fit in a long weekend visiting friends in Scotland which was very overdue, but we shall not be making the same mistakes of "using plastic and paying it off later" again.

Looking forward to a brighter future!

trinni · 16/05/2012 20:57

Thank you Busters, I think I've done a reasonable job with the forms BUT if I need you in future I will PM you. Thank you so much.

WOW Overtiredmum - that really was a result, well done!

BustersOfDoom · 16/05/2012 21:51

No probs trinni wishing you all the best with your complaint!!

drivinmecrazy · 18/05/2012 11:10

DH Had a letter from nationwide this morning, apparently having my income (at the time of taking out PPI) and his excellent sickness/redundancy package with work are not enough to ensure he could have met payments as these are changeable so we would have benefited from PPI to cover credit card costs allowing us to use any other moneys else where. Am fuming because they omitted this info a few weeks ago when they refused us so DH rang them and they agreed to look into it again re the missed info.
Surely with this reasoning of nothing being guaranteed re DH income and benefits package could apply to all claims.
Am actually thinking this woman dealing with us dislikes us cos we wouldn't accept the first decision cos she had left out vital info.
Is it worth us going to the ombudsman? could (potentially) be worth a few thousand. We have been succesful with sainsburys bank with exactly the same info

kitsmummy · 18/05/2012 11:45

Hi, does anyone here have experience of Lloyds paying out on products that were taken out more than 6 years ago? I've had two loans from them, taken out between 10 and 15 years ago. The branch says they only pay out for products done in the last six years, but I wonder if they were just trying to put me off claiming?

FriedSprout · 18/05/2012 21:58

kitsmummy, my loans were in 2003 and 2004 if that helps, no mention of time limit on them.

BustersOfDoom · 18/05/2012 22:29

Yes kitsmummy all my LTSB claims are from products taken out over 6 years ago, going back to 1999. I've had my complaints for 5 loans upheld so far - £10,600 to date - and am waiting on one more loan, a credit card and overdraft insurance. My name is Busters and I was a totally gullible mug!!

Put your complaint in. Don't do it by phone though. Use the form on moneysavingexpert.com and send it recorded delivery.

kitsmummy · 20/05/2012 19:51

thank you so much Busters and Sprout!

BustersOfDoom · 21/05/2012 19:52

You're welcome kitsmummy

Another update from me. Spoke to LTSB today and they have sent me a letter offering me £13,200 for the PPI complaint on my credit card, which will wipe my outstanding balance. I am stunned! That's takes me to just over £23,000 in settlements.

And after this I am never, ever, ever getting into debt again!!!! An expensive lesson well and truly learned!

LackaDAISYcal · 22/05/2012 07:32

Buster, was the basis of your complaint the same for your LTSB credit card and loans, assuming your loans were with them too? They have paid out on my loans but say the credit card wasn't missold, when it was concurrent with one of my loans. I queried this, and am still waiting to hear almost seven weeks later.
I've also had problems getting any information from the PPI phone line. All they will say is that it's in the system. Is there another number to call?

Shakey1500 · 22/05/2012 13:24

Well 'm off to the ombudsman. Had a letter from Barclays today, saying they can find no evidence that the policies were misold :( They absolutely were, as I clearly remember them saying I wouldn't get the loan if I didn't take it out GRRR.

BustersOfDoom · 22/05/2012 20:55

LackaDAISYcal yes, all the reasons were exactly the same. Basically my employee benefits meant that I never needed PPI and I was told it was compulsory.

However there is an issue with some loan PPI policies that means they are more likely to uphold the complaint. If the PPI was front loaded - as in the whole PPI premium was added to your loan amount, then the interest whacked on and then that total sum was divided into monthly payments - that goes totally against FOS 'guidelines' and you have a good chance of a refund.

So far the LTSB phone line have been pretty good. I think they are based in India as their English isn't always great but they've always been helpful and given me the info I've asked for about decisions that have been made/letters sent etc but they can't tell you about anything that's still being looked at. From what I understand you can't actually talk to the people who are looking at your complaint.

They should send you a letter about your credit card tho, all my complaints took 7/8 weeks for them to decide and calculate. I saw it as a good sign that it was taking so long. I'd give them a ring back and ask if a decision has been made. If they knock you back, get the letter and then you should definitely escalate your complaint to the FOS.

ObviouslyOblivious · 22/05/2012 21:26

Got £300 from Nationwide. Better than nothing I suppose! I had two loans (one topped up the other), they say that the first one wasn't mis-sold but there's some evidence that the second loan may have been.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 25/05/2012 16:21

well need some advice please. We were successful getting PPI from Santander, but the current mortgage lender has refused our claim based on a few issues: 1. that we didn't opt out Hmm, and that 2. DH asked for the benefit to be increased in May 2008. When I asked him why, he didn't realize that he already had employee benefits and no one asked him, but mainly he didn't realize it.

I called the bank and they said that was their final decision, so would have to go via the Ombudsman...

Any advice?

BustersOfDoom · 26/05/2012 23:27

ilovemydog I would post your query on the moneysavingexpert.com 'reclaiming PPI' thread. They have some real experts over there who should be able to offer some good advice.

With my little knowlededge though if they didn't tell you it was optional, didn't explore your DH's employee benefits as a result of sickness or redundancy - after all what sort of mortgage lender doesn't ask those questions? - and didn't tell you that you could 'opt out' then it was misold. And on that basis, thinking it was compulsory there is no reason why asking for the benefits to be increased should negate your complaint. If your understanding through what Santander told you was that you had to have it then it would make sense that you would ensure that the benefits would cover any repayment.

But don't take my reading of the situation as anything meaningful, I'm very new to all this myself. Please check out MSE and good luck with your complaint!

mobel · 27/05/2012 22:29

Have claim with welcome through FSO but have been told PPI may have been sold by another company as i applied online for loan but didn;t know at the time it was linked to welcome. This has been ongoing since oct 11, cant even remember name of original company. I have my original policy and it is a welcome policy has anyone had the same problem.

blackrig · 03/06/2012 13:11

Hi there. Can anyone advise?I have had my mortgages since 1985 through Halifax. Can I look at reclaiming PPI from the very beginning for each mortgage change (5 in all) as I have always presumed to get mortgage we have had to take their protection?

narmada · 08/06/2012 13:59

Just wondering if anyone can advise me a bit as I would like to make a claim for potential PPI insurance mis-selling but don't know if I'm time-barred or anything like that.

I took out a postgraduate career development loan in 1998, so 14 years ago, to fund postgraduate study. At the time, I naively signed up for payment protection insurance to cover me in the event that I lost my job or was made redundant and couldn't cover repayments. However, at the time I took out the loan I didn't even have a job, I was studying full-time and would be for another 18 months or so! The PPI sale was predicated on me getting a job after I'd finished studying, which I would then have to lose in order to be able to claim on the policy.

From memory, I think I finished repaying the loan in about 2003 or 2004.

Any advice very welcome.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 23/06/2012 18:26

I got mine!!! Thanks so much for this thread.

BlingBubbles · 24/06/2012 17:17

I am so irritated, still waiting to hear back from EGG, it has now gone over the allotted 8 weeks, think I may give them a call tomorrow. Barclays also sent me a letter saying they are backed up with claims and will take longer than 8 weeks to complete the complain and I can go to the ombudsmen if I want.

Was hoping to get this all sorted by the summer.

Anyone else waiting for egg?

GrasshopperNchipmunk · 24/06/2012 18:01

We're waiting for EGG too... It's been just over 8 weeks, hoping to hear something this week. You know EGG are Barclaycard now though?
