Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Blighted ovum experience

Pinktree87 · 28/02/2024 19:49

We went in for what we thought would be our 7 week scan on Sunday, and found an empty sac
We've been offered rescan for next Thursday and we will discuss options

Ideally I want to naturally miscarry but I'm flying out on a 2 week holiday April so it will be "week12"

Also this is emotionally and physically awful

I just wanted to ask those who have had anembryonic pregnancy before, if you naturally emptied, what week did it happen?

Also should I go medical or surgical if not?

I had a scan at 7 weeks which showed no fetal pole then I went back a week later and there was a 3mm fetal pole measuring 5 weeks when I should have been 8. I had to go back again a week later which showed it was still measuring 5 weeks when I was 9 weeks.

I am also going on holiday in the week when I would have been 12 weeks.

I am booked in for surgical management next Wed (10 weeks) but have started bleeding this week anyway.

Don't know if that's helpful or not. I'm hoping that by the holiday I will be all fine. I wouldn't want to leave it to chance which is why I chose surgical.

I'm sorry to hear @UrsulaSings123, it's such a long process of waiting and not knowing.
I hope all clears by time you go on holiday
I'm in same boat, I've got my D&C booked for Friday so let's see

Hi.
Ive had several of these. Only waited once for it to naturally occur, I knew at 7 weeks, didn’t miscarry until 13 weeks with full on pregnancy symptoms until that point.
so felt nauseous, boobs hurt, extreme exhaustion.
Was a horror show.

Opted for medical management with all the others after that.

Hi!
I had the same at 7 weeks. Opted to naturally miscarry on the advice of my IVF clinic and had 4 weeks of non stop bleeding, retained product leading to infection. Went for a D&C and really wish I'd opted for that straight away as it stopped immediately after. Also the doctors and nurses were so wonderfully kind during the procedure. So sorry for your loss Flowers

@Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon @chillipopcorn1 I'm so sorry to you both too, it's just so cruel!! Feeling so pregnant for weeks on end when you know there's no baby

I was hoping to go naturally but after reading experiences I hope I don't and it sounds awful but I want this feeling over with next week so I can just grieve and feel normal

I had a scan after a bleed at 10 weeks and discovered a blighted ovum. Back the following week for a rescan and I'd been bleeding heavily all week and I had a d&c the same day as it hadn't actually moved much at all which really surprised me so I'd have been waiting a long time for it to sort itself out naturally. I'd my period exactly 30 days later and actually had a baby one year and a day after the D&C.

I found out at 10 weeks it was a blighted ovum at a private scan, I know experiences can be mixed but they were lovely and arranged for a consultant to see us straight away. He prescribed the medication to have it all happen straight away at home. NHS rules usually require a 2 week rescan but we all agreed the outcome was obvious and I felt so distressed I couldn't bear not to have a plan.

I decided to give myself the weekend to come to terms with it, as it happened I miscarried 48 hours later naturally. It was pretty horrible, but only lasted a few hours and then I knew it was "over". I had stupidly gone away for the weekend and regret that as I should have been at home where I'd feel safe and have my creature comforts around me. I never needed the tablets but was glad I'd had them. A follow up scan confirmed it was all gone.

Be kind to yourself, it's a really hard thing to go through. In case it helps to hear a long term positive outcome, I did go on to have a successful pregnancy later.

Sorry to hear that you are going through this. I also had this situation two years ago.
7 week private scan and sac was empty went back one week later and the sac had grown and then two weeks later and the sac was starting to break down.
Opted for medical management however I retained some product of the pregnancy and had to have surgery anyway. This whole process lasted about 4 months until I got a negative pregnancy test so I could start trying again.

But on a positive note I got pregnant again shortly after and now have an 18 month old.
What I realised through this experience is that a lot of women struggle with miscarriage or fertility issues it's just not spoken about. Most people I know have had one so please lean on family and friends for support xx

Hi all, just catching up on all your stories - some are truly horrific and I’m sorry you all had to go through this.
We had a 7 week scan this week to find an Empty sac measuring 10mm. It was an ivf pregnancy so dates are correct. So now waiting til Tuesday to scan again. I really hope they can properly call it so we can move on. I haven’t really had any bleeding, just mild cramping on and off. I am on progesterone though.
I was hoping to let it pass Naturally but these stories of it taking weeks are horrendous, not sure I could cope.

oh also I’m so nauseous today, has anyone had that? Not sure if it’s related. My pregnancy symptoms were tiredness and sore boobs, both of which have faded now.

I can't believe how many women experience this and it's so unknown! Thank you everyone for the support and strength

@Orangelemonbanana @SparkyBlue it's so nice to hear you both went onto having babies and such positive news, hopefully we can try again soon

I wish none of us had to experience this!
@Blossomofhope yes I feel so so nauseous, I have my D&C Friday and I just want this over with.
I'm same as you, 8 weeks today, sac measuring 13mm, I have my 2nd scan Thursday. I'm really hoping I don't go into it naturally.

Might be a really silly question, but I am so bloated and just feel huge at week 8, does the bloat/ weight reduce straight after d&c

@Pinktree87 so sorry you're going through this. I haven't had a blighted ovum but had a MMC in Jan and had an MVA (slightly different to d&c I think?). It's likely the hormones making you bloated but after the surgery it'll start going down as the hormones drop.

Also, I managed to get a surgery slot the day after my confirmation scan so hoping that happens for you x

I'm on holiday in April (Lanzarote) after which we'll be trying again - where are you off to?

@ThelastRolo20 I think I'm just so on edge, hate this uncertainty, after it's over I can stop and grieve

Lanzarote will be great!
We're going Cancun, first holiday in over 2 years and it's a family wedding so over 100 family members, hence why I didn't want to miscarry during

@Pinktree87 I understand ❤️ it's hard to move on emotionally when in the throws of it physically.

Don't be scared if it happens naturally, I know it can be difficult for some but for my first MMC in October (it's been a fun few months!) I was 12 weeks, baby was 10 and it was essentially painless and over in about 3/4 hours during which I did the crossword on the toilet! It was over quickly and very straight forward. Either way it'll be over by the weekend and you'll have some time to hopefully process before your holiday. What a lovely place to go to! Love a destination wedding ❤️

My scan is tomorrow and light spotting has started so I’m hoping tomorrow I can stop progesterone and get it over and done with.

whats everyone doing about work?
I took a day and a half off to cry after the scan last week so I’m thinking will prob need tomorrow after the scan off too - all for the emotional side though.

@Blossomofhope sorry you're going through this, particularly after an IVF journey 💔 it'll be the hormones making you feel sick, quite often it kicks in at this many weeks. Don't be frightened of it happening naturally, it's not always a horrible experience but of course do what's right for you. Likewise with work some people throw themselves back in for a distraction, some need a lot of time off, a lot of people somewhere in between. Have you told your manager what's happening? Maybe take each week as it comes at the moment x

Thank you @ThelastRolo20 .. I’ve just told my team I’m dealing with some health problems. I don’t really want to tell them anymore. I guess I’ll see tomorrow how I feel. 😔

I've had a lot of time off. After scans I couldn't work the same day and after the 1st one I couldn't work the next day either. I'm having Wednesday and thurs off this week as I'm having the surgery on Wed and might have Fri off too depending on how I feel. I'm a support worker and find it extremely difficult to support others emotionally when I'm going through it myself. Take what you need I think - work will survive, we are far more important!
