Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

Oh god, yes!

I'm 55 and have noticed this, but quite distinctively over the last 6 months. I even changed soaps from the usual unscented one I use.

I also thought I wasn't drinking enough water, so upped that. I feel like my insides are swimming at times. And, I had a pap smear due so even asked for Vagifem as I had a sneaky fkn suspicion it was related to menopause. I think the Vagifem helps a bit (or is it the buckets of water?), but it's still there.

Off to find some persimmon soap.

As much as I have moaned about this site recently, along comes this beauty of a thread and I remember why I pop in now and then.

I’m the summer I’ve noticed a smell I can’t describe, it seems to come from between my boobs. I use bar soap, shower twice a day, I’ve tried talc and liquid talc, but I still smell.

Mercurysinretrograde · 07/09/2025 06:48

Menopausal here and on HRT. I’ve so far avoided the onion smell but my pits smell a bit more strongly. I shower twice a day and eat a lot of yoghurt with added probiotics to try to sort this out. I have also given up eating fish as I smell awful the next day. Salmon is the worst, sadly, but even fish and chips turns me into a bloody walking cod the next day.

I haven’t notice any pee smell, or don’t remember my Mum smelling. I did have onion armpits though, Mitchum didn’t work. I read on here to buy Secret Outlast deodorant from Amazon, expensive but it is amazing stuff. Never had a smelly armpit since, and I can wear tops two days now (if I wanted to).

However, I have noticed that my hands and forearms smell odd in the morning only. I can’t describe the smell, just weird. Anyone else get that?

Yes my hands smell of gravy granules.

I’d forgotton about it until you mentioned it - because I don’t smell them as a habit 😂

But I’ve found it odd none the less and it’s probably all part of the hormonal loveliness too!

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/09/2025 07:24

I think my wee smells sometimes. Someone mentioned an ammonia type smell on another thread, and I’ve smelt that.

Highlighta · 07/09/2025 07:27

So, I can't find persimmon soap in my country. Neither Sharon fruit soap as that is what it's called here. The only option seemingly is to order via Temu 😏

So anyone know what the next best option would be? My thoughts are something citrussy, we do get mandarin, orange and every other kind of fruity options.

When I get a sweaty flash at night it’s mainly on my chest (so between the boobs) as the place where I feel the sweat. I’ve always meant to ask other women if that’s where they get it too.

Greeneyegirl · 07/09/2025 07:44

This is interesting and I'm nowhere near this age but I remember my GCSE English teacher had it!! Her whole room it seemed one day randomly smelt of onion and she stank! Eventually she left, I often randomly remember it

Windthebloodybobbinup · 07/09/2025 07:50

Mince- slightly off mince is my new sweat smell. Grim.

littleteapot86 · 07/09/2025 07:56

Like a PP said "new fear unlocked" 😨

The Amazon descriptions of persimmon soap are hilarious...

I was able to smell DH's cancer 18 months before he was diagnosed so it might be worth a check up. His breath, his skin, everything smelled different.

What we eat and our gut biome changes how we smell.

This is what I’m worried about with my DH, that there’s something wrong with him. But because my cancer treatment heightened my sense of smell he thinks I’m just being weird. What type of cancer did your husband have?

Google is trolling me now...

I wouldn’t worry too much about much about the smell- it’s not actively unpleasant, just distinctive. Perhaps it’s a normal smell but suddenly much stronger, for a period of time?

The older man smell is greasier, I’d say. Like they’ve stopped washing their hair. I wonder whether washing the nape of the neck and shoulders with shampoo- especially anti dandruff- would do it?

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/09/2025 08:08

I remember an old thread about old people smelling, and someone said that they smell behind the ears when you hug them. I wonder if those that go to the hairdressers weekly aren’t having a good neck/ear wash as they don’t want to ruin their hair. So I’ve learned to scrub my neck and behind my ears now!

Catsandcannedbeans · 07/09/2025 08:08

Older people smell different, I know the smell you mean. Also if one of my kids or my DH is about to get sick I can smell it on them. My mum used to sniff us whenever we said we were too sick to go to school and could literally sniffy out a sicky with 100% accuracy. I always thought she was kind of bullshitting but now I can smell it too.

Yes I am getting this too. The smell is really strong. The first time I noticed it I was sat outside one day and thought it was coming from a tree (you know the trees that smell of semen), then i realised it was coming from my own cleavage. Very disturbing.

I just presumed this was an old bachelor smell when they stopped washing their clothes and selves properly

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/09/2025 08:17

I always wash our winter coats in the summer, as I hate that smell that old people’s coats often have, the smell when a coat has been wet then dry over and over again.

Bayou2000 · 07/09/2025 08:17

Smells can be indicative of other health conditions, for example Parkinson’s.

BruceLeTerror · 07/09/2025 08:18

Wow this completely exploded!
and OMG thank you everyone - for the solidarity and chuckles with my morning cuppa 😂
its definitely not strong wee (that’s a different smell) I can only describe it to myself as musky? Not unpleasant- just distinctive
I used to think it was just my dear Mum, then panicked when I smelt it on me, but guess it must be a menopausal thing 🙄

thanks again everyone 🙃

This thread is giving me a Proustian rush... Don't think I have ever seen this discussed before.

I recognise this smell from my mum and from going into public loos after women of a certain age. I don't find it pleasant. I think a PP was spot on describing it as a "full" smell - I would describe it as "thick". I associate it with having cystitis or bladder infections myself, but don't know if that's the complete story. Hormones?

I heard my mum say that she thinks her wee smells and she needs to drink more water. She finished up with a water infection and had to be hospitalized. She's 66.

metalmutha · 07/09/2025 08:19

I'm 44. So glad you asked this question OP and am relieved it's not just me.
I'm definitely in the throes of perimenopause and really struggling. Thank for this post. It's really helping and lifting my mood 😌
