Does anyone else “smell” … funny?😳

BruceLeTerror · 06/09/2025 19:06

When I was a kid, the loo always smelled “funny” after my DMum had used it.

Fast forward 40 years, now I’m smelling that smell when I use the loo (or just on/about me in general)

I can’t describe it 😳

Am 48 - guess Mum would have been similar age at the time?

FWIW I shower every day and wash at other end of the day

tia 🙏

I'm 44. So glad you asked this question OP and am relieved it's not just me.
I'm definitely in the throes of perimenopause and really struggling. Thank for this post. It's really helping and lifting my mood 😌

Ahh Thank You 🙏
its shite at times isn’t it? I didn’t expect this thread to take off like this, but some of the replies made me lol - but I guess it highlights we are not alone - even if we can’t talk about it IRL and panic every time we use a loo that’s not in the safety of our own homes 😳

I read it’s mostly from your armpits, between your breasts and your groin area.

Muffinmam · 07/09/2025 08:26

I’m 40+ and in the last few years my partner has told me that I leave a smell after I use the toilet.

I am in perimenopause and I think that this is the smell 😳

My mother never had a smell. But she smoked so I think that masked it.

ocelot3 · 07/09/2025 08:27

I worked with a senior colleague who had this. The smell in her office was kind of sweet, mouldy/fungal musk - definitely bodily and not a wierd perfume choice. It was cloying and overpowering though I do have a very sensitive nose. I used to constantly throw open the windows in her office when she was out. We were both going through menopause at the time and she had just taken over running the place so I felt like this wouldn’t help her relationships with colleagues . I never mentioned it to her though and now I don’t work there. I hope I don’t have it, though I think if I did my DC would probably say something… 😬

MadeInYorkshire69 · 07/09/2025 08:27

When we moved into our house, the previous owners left it clean but all the toilets stank of fish for about 3 months, despite being bleached and cleaned obsessively because of this. Was the oddest thing.

The girls on The Luanna podcast call it the hoff boff 🤣

someone at my work also calls it huff woof

PestoHoliday · 07/09/2025 08:33

My kids always know when I've recently used the loo, and it's definitely been since peri. My gran was the same.

It's kind of depressing just how many things menopause ficks around with.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 07/09/2025 08:35

There’s nothing actually wrong with smells- some are actively unpleasant and we want to avoid them, but generally it’s just a source of information.
It’s just another reminder we don’t want to face, I guess.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/09/2025 08:36

I am now trying to imagine the smell. Is it the kind of smell you get when sanitary wear needs changing? I’m half a century and haven’t noticed it but I am fastidious about such things.

How is this a discussion point for you to know your kids ‘know’ when you’ve used the toilet? I’m intrigued.

I don’t know which you mean but if I drink too much Pepsi max I feel as my pee smells of marmite

Since starting HRT it seems I have one onion armpit!

Yes I have one problem arm pit!!

No it isn’t. And I think the smell is in the urine itself and however fastidious you are that won’t make a difference, but thanks for implying those of us who have it are dirty. It’s not dehydration or UTI, that smells and looks different.

This is what I’m worried about with my DH, that there’s something wrong with him. But because my cancer treatment heightened my sense of smell he thinks I’m just being weird. What type of cancer did your husband have?

DH had a 8cm tumour on his kidney that he went on to rupture and have removed, kidney and all.

Three years later he began to smell the same way and sure enough he had 10 tiny tumours in his remaining kidney so that went too.

Cancer has a smell. I have a friend whose horse kept nudging her boob and she got it checked out and she had breast cancer.

The thing is, even if DH had gone to the doc, unless he had a scan, no-one would have known as it likely wouldn't have shown up on a blood sample. This is because of his specific cancer though. It's still worth going to get checked out.

Mildly rotting onions is how I describe how I smelled for a couple of years. It does go away.

I have always been able to smell something (not linked to age) on my hands and bars of soap/soap dishes or around sinks (especially steal sinks) that smells 'onion-y'. Others always claim they can't smell it.

I assume I'm one of those people with a random quirk to smell some kind of waste produce from a random harmless bacteria that lets me know it there. Don't even know which bacteria but it thrives in damp areas, isn't 'bothered' by soap and doesn't seem to make people ill.

Its annoy because sometime washing my hand makes them stink of onions and then I can't concentrate on anything else because I hate onion smell.

The body starts to breakdown as you age and releases a fusty kind of smell. It’s a compound in the skin called 2-nonenal. Washing with persimmon soap can help with this.

Although I don’t smell as such (no b.o) sometimes my son says I smell of the 1970s. I’ve blamed it on Badedas but I wonder if its my age 😬 (early 60s).

Laiste · 07/09/2025 08:49

This thread ! 🤪

Trees that smell of semen ?!?

If i don't drink enough water my wee smells strong - like first wee when you get up - but apart from that i don't think i've noticed a new smell.

My mother has a horrendous old person smell (sorry but it is) and i am paranoid about developing that .

PersephoneParlormaid · 07/09/2025 08:59

The price for persimmon products on Amazon is going to rocket!

I used to have a male boss many year’s ago (a very nice man) probably around fifty, but he had this strange smell. It wasn’t a typical body odour smell it was more like really heavy, sickly sweet thick make up smell (like foundation). He didn’t wear make up though. I sometimes wondered if it was a health issue, as he suddenly passed away (although I think from a heart attack).

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 07/09/2025 09:00

There is a tree or shrubs that smells semen y. There are some around my village, maybe someone more knowledgeable will tell us which one it is.

I have switched from dove soap to imperial leather and Cidal soap lately as noticed this Nonenal smell on DH. We are in our 60s.
I can smell it on pillowcases and occasionally on DH clothes which i am washing more often. Part of getting older, sadly.

Poodlelove · 07/09/2025 09:02

Didn't Gwyneth Paltrow make a special candle ?🫢😂
Do you think it is nature's way of putting off potential partners as we can no longer reproduce as allow men to find fresh new women ?
I now change knickers twice a day . 1 shower and 1 full body wash. 😂

WarriorN · 07/09/2025 09:03

OMG!

the onion pits are driving me mad at the moment.

It’s been coming and going for a few years, but I’ve been on hrt then off and on tamoxifen. Had periods for a year but not for a few months now.

the other weird smell has been biscuit smelling fingers in the morning which I can’t find as a “thing” anywhere! It seems to vary so I’m assuming linked to what I’ve eaten the day before.

and then completely stops altogether.

thanks for the persimmon soap heads up

I’ve heard of that! I think it’s know as maple syrup body odour x
