So that Uwilalalalala doesn't get offended by us bookworms - or would like to be bookworms if we had the time...

OP posts:
pudding77 · 21/11/2006 17:01

Right, I've made a list of 10 books - is that too many? I've tried to get a bit of a mix in there:

I capture the castle - Dodie Smith
Case Histories - Kate Atkinson
The Handmaids Tale - Margaret Atwood
New Orleans Mourning - Julie Smith
Three moons in Vietnam - Maria Coffey
Hearts in Atlantis - Stephen King
Tell No One - Harlan Coben
LA Requiem - Robert Crais
Lucky You - Carl Hiasen
The Gunslinger - Stephen King

sfxmum · 21/11/2006 17:38

good selection pudding i have read a couple.
think will make a list with foreign writers and sci-fi

just a question is this with or without children? must negotiate with dh you see

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 17:47

I'm doing it without otherwise I'll just be chasing ds around Foxie's house!!

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 18:01

Pud,

Is this the list of what you'd like to read or what you're lending?

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 18:14

Hi mellow, this is what I'm lending. I don't think I could be that specific with what I wanted to read

Paddlechick666 · 21/11/2006 18:18

bloody hell pud, you're organised! i'll try to do something in the next few days.

btw, lovely to see you this arvo again. your ds is such a cutie!

erm, i'm hoping this event is with kids otherwise i'll struggle..........

mine'll be a mixture but mostly Waterstones/Borders 3 for 2 offer types!

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 18:43

Nice to see you again paddle as well, and your dd is so lovely. I'm amazed she put up with ds grabbing her for as long as she did lol. I'm just organised because ds had a little nap when we got home & I'd have forgotten otherwise!

Don't worry - I haven't made special plans not to bring ds. I'd already arranged for dh to take him to his grandparents along with a load of stuff to stick in their attic .

deckthehalls · 21/11/2006 19:27

I capture the castle is one of my absolute faves!! You have good taste So when is the first bookclub meet?

harktheheraldfoxessing · 21/11/2006 19:40

Decky - its 2 December at 11am at mine. I will do my list tomorrow.

PC - I have your details so will text you our address. Does everyone else want to text me and I'll call you back with our address and directions? text: 07779-289-041

Puds - that list is great!

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 19:59

Phew - glad people like my list! I was trying to pick ones that made me look smart lol

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 20:11

I'm going to come across like a right geek...

I can offer

Terry Brooks - the Magic Kingdom of Landover Series
Terry Brooks - Spellsinger series
David & Leigh Eddings - The Redemption of Althalus

That's all I've read lately. Have a couple of Michael Moore books I haven't got round to reading yet and dh has tonnes of clive cussler and that other guy, but that's not quite my cup of tea.

One book I can highly recommend but gave to a friend is 'What about me', it's diary style entries alternating those of a 13 year old and her mother. Now that I've got kids, even not teenagers yet, I so enjoyed it!

God I'm a sad individual!

OP posts:
mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 20:57

MrsB,

Terry Brooks and David Eddings are my fav sf fantasy authors. Can I read your picks?

I won't be able to get my list together till the weekend. I've got to go down to my out laws to get my book boxes out of the attic 1st.

sfxmum · 21/11/2006 21:03

mellowwas that a Freudian slip?

i might have to bring dd not sure yet
i have been baking oatmeal&raisin cookies today yum yum any diversionary tactic to keep me from my essay

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 21:15

I'm afraid I can't bake so I'm bringing store-bought shortbread to the meet up.

Paddlechick666 · 21/11/2006 21:17

oh my lord mellow, sounds a bit of a mission! i'm sure you could be excused and just be a borrower until you've got your books out.

okay, it's a long list:

JB Preistley: The Good Companions
VS Naipaul: A House for Mr Biswas
Ben Okri: Dangerous Love, Songs of Enchantment, The Famished Road, Stars of the New Curfew
Monica Ali: Brick Lane
Sebastion Faulks: Birdsong, Charlotte Gray
Clive Barker: The Theif of Always, Imajica
Alan Hollinghurst: The Line of Beauty
Ben Elton: Past Mortem
Philip Roth: The Human Stain
Ian Banks: The Crow Road
Robert Heinlen - These Are Precious
Methuselah's Children
The Man Who Sold The Moon
Assignment in Eternity Vol 2
Have Spacesuit Will Travel
Number of The Beast
Friday
To Sail Beyond The Sunset
The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathon Hoag
Glory Road
The Moon is a Hard Mistress
Stranger in a Strange Land - 2 copies
Time Enough for Love
I Will Fear No Evil

I'm certain I had Starship Troopers and Job but they're not on the shelf.

Oh and I just finished Glen Duncan's Death of an Ordinary Man which was brilliant but heartbreaking.

I've got more.............

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:18

mellow they're you're favourites and you haven't read the series? Well those 2 will keep ya busy! You're welcome to read the lot!

OP posts:
MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:21

I've got Starship troopers LOL

PC I've read all the Heinleins you've listed... is that geek alert?

We've got heaps of books in storage, shall have a look when we go out this weekend to retrieve the christmas tree (yes we go 'fake')

OP posts:
Paddlechick666 · 21/11/2006 21:23

we can be geeks together!

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 21:23

Err, now that you mention it. . . I might have read the Magic Kingdom series

I've to say I've got a notoriously bad memory of what I've read because I go through them so quickly. I frequently get books out of the library only to realise I've already read them.

The last time I read Brooks and Eddings was in uni though. I hope you won't mind me borrowing them just in case I haven't read them.

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 21:24

Foxie,

I think I texted you. Could you check to see if you received my text? My mobile is being a bit erratic.

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:31

mellow ... magic kingdom is rich fellow buys kingdom, which of course, is a magic kingdom. He wears an amulet that protects him and falls in love with a green nymphe. Ring a bell?

OP posts:
pudding77 · 21/11/2006 21:43

Paddle, I will definitely borrow some of your Heinlen. Some of the titles sound familiar - I know I've read Job, think I've also read Stranger in a Strange land, Methusulah's children & Friday. However, as you're the expert, I'll take your recommendation! And I will take good care of them! I'm also intrigued by the death of an ordinary man but I will not be greedy - I only have 30mins a night to read

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 21:46

No, I checked. I actually read The Swords of Shannara trilogy.

I haven't read The Redemption of Althalus either. I only read Eddings' The Mallorean series.

I'm going to be really busy reading these books.

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:48

One recommendation re Heinlein... Number of the Beast is fantastic, HOWEVEr should be read after having read most of the others ;)

OP posts:
MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:49

oh yes shanarra is great. Had the lot and guess what.. ebay LOL

Haven't even heard of Mallorean Series!
