So that Uwilalalalala doesn't get offended by us bookworms - or would like to be bookworms if we had the time...

Ooh! PC,

Can I also borrow Heinlen's Time Enough for Love? [greedy emoticon]

trying2bgood · 21/11/2006 21:51

How do you guys find the time? Please advise! Went to my book club (how very civilised) last night and none of us bar one had managed to finish the book - middlesex - but of course we still managed to chat about it happily for two hours ( & eat pizza & gossip!).

Paddlechick666 · 21/11/2006 21:52

Pud/Mellow - no probs!

erm recomendation wise, i'd certainly agree that Number should be left till last-ish.

Stranger is pure genius in my book. I also love I Will Fear No Evil. Friday is great too!

Forgot to mention I've got a few John Wyndhams too.

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:52

my reading time, dare I say it, is when I'm in the bathroom! (don't worry I'm not talking about when having a bath, for that I only use cheap mags)... hmmm now that sounds terribly wrong LOL

I read when I bf and I bf up to 7 times a day.

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 21:53

Hi tryin, the only way I can do it is with a half-hour read before I go to sleep. It means now that a book will last me a week or so whereas pre-ds it would last a couple of days!

Mellow - are you going to come to music class tomorrow? If not, would you like to meet up in the afternoon?

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:54

yes stranger is pure genious and wouldn't it be great to be able to do what then can do? 2-3 h special 'sleep' and ya fit for the day, not to mention perfect figures etc. hehehehehe

forgot to say the Time Enough is my all time favorite tho........

good to read Methuselah first tho

trying2bgood · 21/11/2006 21:54

I loved eddings earlier stuff but then read his latest stuff and realised it was abit repetitive. No one can beat the LOTR series. Has anyone read JV Jones books? She is good.

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 21:55

hmm, maybe I haven't read stranger then as that doesn't sound familiar...

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 21:55

defo reading Methusala's children first helps, though Time Enough was my first Heinlein and still my fav too. PC we like the same books. SCARY LOL

OP posts:
Paddlechick666 · 21/11/2006 21:59

oh god, it gets worse, Time Enough was my first too! I only read Methuselah recently actually.......

Stranger is huge Pud and there is so much crammed in there. I don't think you'd forget it.

I know that I forget books pretty quick too tho, i read them so quickly.

Hear ya with the "making a book last" thing, i used to ready for an entire day pre-dd!

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 21/11/2006 22:00

Pud,

I've got to wait to find out tomorrow morning when [whisper] my phone interview is happening. It's probably in the morning so we can meet up for a coffee pm?

Do you want to come to Grounds?

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 22:00

Just checked on Amazon and I have read it. I've not read sci-fi for a long time so I'm guessing this is the place where I'll get back into it!!

Currently on a crime/mystery phase now which followed on from my Stephen King phase. Tbh, SK phase still going on - love his books. He did write a series which is a kind of sci-fi called The Dark Tower. One of his I listed (The Gunslinger) is the first one in that series and pretty much every book he writes is in some way linked to that series.

Boring lecture over now, sorry!

MrsBojangles · 21/11/2006 22:01

my problem is I do remember books very well, that's why I don't like re-reading. Saying that I have re-read all the Heinleins! that's gotta mean something LOL

I think I better go to bed now. DD snoring away in my bed, and ds so far so good sleeping in his bed. Maybe I should take the sofa, but dh will be back around 2300 and only wake me up anyhow

trying2bgood · 21/11/2006 22:02

Ok, am going to leave you bookworms as I have to watch CSI:NY!!!!

pudding77 · 21/11/2006 22:02

Fantastic news about the interview Mellow, good luck. I'd love to meet up at Grounds but it depends on when ds has his nap. I'll give you a ring tomorrow if that's ok.

sfxmum · 21/11/2006 22:06

while you have been chatting i have been watching an interview with Terry Pratchett on bbc4.

know what you mean about time to read. and i like some telly too. dd not one for huge naps and now i have this uni thing.

BF was great but i guess that with a 2nd baby it would not be the same.

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 10:24

Stranger in a Stange Land is a legendary cult book isn't it? Was it famous in the 1970's or somehing?

Puds I read in bed each night to, until I get drousy. DS and DS also read in bed at night too (well DD looks at the pictures and tells her own little story)

Will deffo do my list today...

pudding77 · 22/11/2006 10:27

Didn't people start living in the little communes as well?

Paddlechick666 · 22/11/2006 10:28

hi foxie

yeah i could very well imagine it was. the unabridged version has since been published.

a word of warning to anyone who's not familiar with Heilen tho, he's got an interesting take on women however and turn of phrase. however, given the time of his writings he's pretty enlightened imo.

he was also pretty controversial at the time.......

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 10:35

PC - you now I'm sure Stranger in a Strange Land inspired someone really notorious who was completely obsessed with that book (someone like Charles Manson, but not neccesarily him). Oh its really annoying me now, as its on the tip of my tongue.

Anyone know when it was first published - that might help me remember??

pudding77 · 22/11/2006 10:41

It won an award in 1962 so must have been published around 1960/61

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 11:01

Puds - hmm, it could have been Charles Manson's fave book then.

Anyway here's my list:

Amy Tan (all her books I think)
Ian McEwan (all his too)
Andrea Levy (all)
Meera Syall - Anita and Me + Life isn't all Ha Ha Hee hee
Anita Shreve (all hers too)
Marti Laimbach - Daniel isn't talking (about a Mum realsing her son is autistic)
The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini (brilliant )
Julian Barnes - Arthue & George
Niccolo Ammaniti - I'm not scared
Leila Aboulela - Minoret
Fay Weldon - She May not Leave (about a Polish nanny )

Where it says (all) I can grab any one on request,as I don't ave to ransport hem and would recommend any by those authors!

Does anyone have any wish lists, as well as swapperoonies?

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 11:05

Puds - wouldn't mind borrowing I Capture the Castle and The Handmaids Tale maybe if no one else hankers after them... your list looks ineresting

My wish list:

Contemporary novelists - any!?

Really enjoy foreign writers though
