So that Uwilalalalala doesn't get offended by us bookworms - or would like to be bookworms if we had the time...

Must admit I've never read JC. Read B Jones, which was funny at first, but kind of gets on your nerves after a while.

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 23/11/2006 20:34

sfx,

I would love to borrow the half brother from you. The library didn't have a copy.

sfxmum · 23/11/2006 20:49

pudding77 · 23/11/2006 20:51

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 23/11/2006 20:54

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 23/11/2006 21:03

pud,

i'm reading orhan pamuk's snow recommended by sfx.

sfx,
2nd would be fine. I've got 3 more books to get through before the 2nd.

sfxmum · 23/11/2006 21:04

Pud - Flannery O'Conner is, i think, from the 30's or so you might know Wise Blood, think got made into a movie. have other stuff if you interested.
she is very much in that tradition some other books in that vein can get all blood sucking and sort of soft porn

not to be rude ladies but i am off to lust after Jason Isaacs on the state within. back later

pudding77 · 23/11/2006 21:20

hmmm, may have to borrow one of those sfx!

harktheheraldfoxessing · 24/11/2006 06:41

Morning fellow bookworms

Not sure what a Southern Gothic is but it sounds brilliant fun!

Has anyone read "Puffle" by Fay Weldon?

Its about a woman who persuades her DP to move from London to the ideal country cottage. She gets PG and he decides to stay in London midweek, sewing his wild oats !. Turns out the woman next door to the country cottage is a local witch . The book is very funny and follows Liffeys baby's gestation in incredible detail and it transpires she has placenta previa (like me atm - hoping it will move). Its great.

I finished Puffle at 4am this morning when I couldn't sleep!

Paddlechick666 · 24/11/2006 07:38

haven't read that one Foxie but sounds good.

i could use something a bit uplifting actually..... anyone got anything they can reccomend?

btw, is it okay to bring our LOs to your place? I'll bring extra cake/biscuits/treats!!

pudding77 · 24/11/2006 08:07

I went to Waterstones yesterday so I've got The Devil Wears Prada & Wicked if you'd like to try them Paddle. Wicked is the one of the witch from Wizard of Oz that's just been turned into a musical.

MrsBojangles · 24/11/2006 09:34

still lots of names I've never heard about LOL
hope we can bring the kids otherwise I can't make it as dh is off gaming

sfx - know how you feel about eddie, used to love him to bits. We saw him about 5 years ago at the amnesty comedy gig and he was recycling famous jokes of his, loads of people were shouting 'we heard this', his replies were quite witty though! He has gone all hollywood and his stand up career is on the back burner - sigh! It happens a lot, not sure what Jack Dee was thinking when he did his sitcom, it's not funny!

And did anyone watch stargate's 200th episode, what was that all about? Funny in places but still an indulgance on the writer's part. Ok had my rant, am off to the shops with dd2, hopefully will be back on later. Feel weird as could not sleep last night!

trying2bgood · 24/11/2006 09:59

My reading group were reading middlesex by jeffry eugenides. it's good! although I am still only half way through it as it is a tomb of a book - am seriously going now!!!!

sfxmum · 24/11/2006 10:02

bookworms hello
regarding your questions
this is proper souther gothic
this
this is the stuff you don't tell people you read
this i am actually very respectable and mostly stay away from this nonsense

sfxmum · 24/11/2006 10:08

tt2bgood i read the Virgin Suicides and loved it have that one around but am yet to tackle it, these days size is a criteria

i did not catch SG-1 but o like that sort of stuff will catch the repeat. it's like Farscape more and more, how i miss that at least some of the cast is on this one

i did not watch JD usually avoid sitcoms, except for Dylan Moran in Black Books side splitting funny 1st series.

Paddlechick666 · 24/11/2006 10:46

pud, that's really generous of you. i quite fancy the stage show of Wicked. was trying to get skids to want to go before everything imploded.

can't read it before you've read it tho!

i have got a stack of unreads but they're all a bit miserable i think!

trying2bgood · 24/11/2006 11:30

sfx - I miss farscape too so were glad to see the leads get jobs in stargate! I loved their chemistry in farscape so was abit sad not to see them 'together' on stargate. However,I was very happy that they made an 'ending' for farscape. And in the stargate episode they paid homage to farscape.

paddle - also quite fancy seeing wicked - future mums meet up perhaps? or is that too ambitious?

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 24/11/2006 11:47

t2bg,

Do you watch Desperate Housewives? I'm a big fan . Can you also check the chinese mum thread and let me know what you think? Thx.

trying2bgood · 24/11/2006 11:49

mellow - no, never got into it and I am into so many shows that I have had to deliberately avoid others so I don't get sucked in ie, desparate, lost, bones! Have put a post on other thread.

pudding77 · 24/11/2006 11:50

Also a fan of SG, not yet watched the 200th episode. Also a huge fan of DH - does anyone know when the next series starts?

Paddle - don't worry, I've got loads to read as well so I'll bring that along on the 2nd unless you want it before.

harktheheraldfoxessing · 24/11/2006 14:04

Hi

Los are welcome if you need to bring them along. I'll put DS and DD in charge of the DVDs and biscuits in the oher room

sfxmum · 25/11/2006 16:02

t2bgood - just watched repeatfab! great homage to star trek

still working on shortlist since some of the books i thought about i do not know where they arei moved while i was pregnant so the shelves are super messy and several books deep stored horizontal and vertical!i know it was nearly 2yrs ago but it has not been top of my list of priorities

pudding77 · 25/11/2006 16:49

sfx, I'm the complete opposite, when we move my books are the first thing I sort out as I hate not knowing where they are! And yes, I arrange them alphabetically by author

sfxmum · 25/11/2006 17:23

good for you pud i was too tired 7m pregnant, loads of books only the special ones, like first editions and oddities, got sorted and occasionally i have a look and sort a few more. my family sometimes have a rummage and take a few to read so i then know where they are i have spent many obsessive moments looking for books that just popped into my head.

dd's book collection keeps expanding too and i am quite pleased that she likes them. she also has some bi-lingual books to help us along, much to her amusement but she has come out with a few names for things in both languages.
