So that Uwilalalalala doesn't get offended by us bookworms - or would like to be bookworms if we had the time...

(sorry Mellow, forgot to respond earlier - got your text this morning )

sfx/trying2Bgood - text me on 07779-289-041 and will send the address.

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 11:31

Mellow -of course - its a brill book, would highly recommend it. If you like it, I've got all her others too (went through a bit of a Shreve phase during the summer)!

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 11:34

i am having a hard time making a list
dh wrote a programme to catalogue the books and i pronised i would do while on maternity leave, well nearly 18m after the birth...are we weird?
it can go online and be like a library and all, my lovely geeky dh

anyone read

Tibor Fisher - The thought gang (LOL)

House of Leaves is a huge insane book the guy just wrote another one which i want for christmas.

just a question do any of you manage to read Martin Amis? i always feel like i should but i can't bear him or his characters

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 11:42

sfx - totally agree with you. I bought London Fields and hated it. Just cannot read Amis

I have another Tibor Fisher book - something about frogs.

Paddlechick666 · 22/11/2006 11:43

foxie, don't know about Stranger, can look tonight and tell you when it was published.

i've already given quite a few of my contemporary books away to friends ;-(

i'm not familiar with all the titles flying about so no idea what i'd like to read yet!

mind you, i only get to read on the train 2 days per week so.......

your online library sounds brill sfx.

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 11:44

Under the Frog - Tibor Fischer!

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 22/11/2006 11:47

No, I can't stand Martin Amis.

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 12:06

dh said the only Amis he read with pleasure was the bio thing about his dad.

i keep getting books that i have no chance in hell of reading any time soon, but i always want more.

i read popular science too love Stephen Jay Gould.

oh yes and i like Richard Ford, he can make an unsympathetic character interesting
and also Paul Auster

MrsBojangles · 22/11/2006 12:40

I'm such an ingoramus... haven't even heard most of the names you're throwing about LOL

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 13:44

sfx/mrsd/pc - did you get the address OK?

mrsd - I haven't heard of those authors either!!

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 13:50

yes i did thanks foxie was just getting dd down for her nap.

i would happily run a 2nd book shop but i fear it would turn up like 'black books'in my grumpy old woman days, not the sloth and drunkenness but the despair a crap books people want to read.

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 13:51

second hand i meant unfortunately do not have a 1st book shop

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 13:53

sfx - there used to be a shop called Black Books, with books by black authors!!

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 13:55

how very pc was that north london?

i think last time i watched any live comedy was with that guy before he got really big, i miss Eddie Izzard being good too

MrsBojangles · 22/11/2006 13:59

yes foxie got address alright Up to my elbows in filing as boss told me to file everything on other bosses desk away. Boss no. 2 is a horder so I've got my work cut out for me. I'll never complain about being bored again!

Paddlechick666 · 22/11/2006 14:05

hi foxie, yep thanks for text.

sfx, i miss eddie izzard being good too ;-(

mrsb, we're not ignorant because we haven't heard of these authors - we're waiting to be educated!

the only good thing I read by Martin Amis was a piece in the Sunday Times Mag about the World Poker Tournament. Altho he was very interesting on Radio4 the other talking about his dad.

pudding77 · 22/11/2006 14:45

Never tried Martin Amis though you've put me off now! I've read one of Paul Auster's books - New York Trilogy - which was ok.

Foxie - just got your text, that was fast work! And I will reserve those two for you.

Wish list - I've already mentioned Heinlen, other than that willing to try anything really. I'm not a huge fan of 'chick lit' and I recently tried a Jilly Cooper (in the spirit of openmindedness) but I had to give up when I could feel brain cells turning into mush! Sorry if there are any JC fans out there!

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 14:47

oh i know Mrs Coulter - Cate Blanchett

sfxmum · 22/11/2006 14:49

how about Flannery OConnor? any takers i do love a good southern Gothic

mellowandreadyforchristmas · 22/11/2006 14:54

There's no need to apologise. I thoroughly enjoy JC books . They help me unwind after a stressful work day. Ditto chick lit.

harktheheraldfoxessing · 22/11/2006 15:00

Puds - woz that U wot texted me about 10 minutes ago??

pudding77 · 22/11/2006 15:04

Yes it was foxie!

To be fair, I've only tried one JC so maybe there are others which are better.

Paddlechick666 · 22/11/2006 15:17

secret guilty pleasure: both the JCs of trashy beach reading fame!

pudding77 · 22/11/2006 15:21

I don't know what it is about JC and other books like that, I can never really get into them or give 2 hoots about the characters! The only one I enjoyed was Bridget Jones & that was after watching the film.
