Here's the general chit-chat thread for October

Synopsis please on what I've missed last week! Too pre-occupied for various reasons to wade through all threads. Thanks

try again!

tomee tippee cup

Boowila · 18/10/2006 15:48

Not the same. It isn't spill proof, and all the ones that are in the UK don't screw on. Avent are pretty good competition but they are a royal pain to wash. Just how many spare parts can one cup have?!?!?!

unhallowed · 18/10/2006 16:07

Boowila--what are the advantages of the Playtex sippy cup? I hear they are going to have it at the baby show in London and on general sale next year.

We have the Vitalbaby 1st tumbler (scroll down to bottom of pg) which is spillproof and screwed on but not easy to drink from, even though they claim it is. My dd hates it.

She prefers the Tommee Tippee 1st cup which is not spill proof but easier to drink from.

unhallowed · 18/10/2006 16:15

Incidentally, is anyone going to the baby show in Earls Court? I'm toying with the idea of going but, knowing me, I'll probably come back with lots of junk .

Boowila · 18/10/2006 16:54

Oh yes, we have a Vital cup too. Got in John Lewis I think. They have the easy to clean single piece valve thing down, but that wide hard mouth piece is too hard for a 4-6 month baby. My DS is 17 months and has only now taken to the sippy cup really.

Playtex advantages:

  1. top is easy to screw on and is in fact sealed when screwed on reasonably tightly.
  2. Valve is truly spill proof when no pressure (beyond atmospheric) is applied -- i.e. when baby is not sucking on it.
  3. The valve is one easy-to-clean piece.

I can find cups in the UK that are spill proof. I can find cups that are easy to clean. And I can find cups that are easy to put together. But I can not find any one cup with all three of these characteristics.

The playtex come insulated and non-insultaed. I have both because sometimes I want the drink to stay cold and sometimes I don't.

I'll have to get exited again about baby cups next year won't I?

Our house is a sort of shrine to Dr Who at the moment

anybody having a clear out and want to offload a forward facing 9+ car seat in good condition without any knocks etc?

need to put one in Ma's new car and haven't really got £100 spare at the mo.

don't want to buy 2nd hand one of a stranger but would trust you lot not to sell me something shonky.

TIA

2Cute · 18/10/2006 23:07

NZ whizzi? That'll be pretty amazing. We've always thought of going but never actually done it Be sure to get bulk head seats so DD can sleep in the bassinet provided by the airline or you'll have a dead arm.

DS has travelled abroad quite a bit the lucky monkey, 9 times to be exact and he's only 2! I wasn't to sure about how he'll like NY so might put up a thread.

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 19/10/2006 09:22

hmmm NZ, lovely long flight did that when dd was 18 months old. Thankfully she was light enough to go into one of those cot thingies. I recommend Singapore Airlines they were great with her and didn't mind that she ran up and down the aisles for most of the flight . Flew via Singapore and the airport is great because if you have a few hours lay-over there are showers, food, shops etc.

Boowila · 19/10/2006 09:37

Fizi,
I could probably work a deal with car seats. DD still sits in her 9+ car seat. But, at 3 1/2 years she really could move up a notch. So, I could sell you her existing one and help to fund her upgrade.

Her car seat is in good condition, but it is of course used. What is your price range? I think it was £130 new.

FiziWhiziLetsGetScary · 19/10/2006 09:52

well, NZ is the plan altho I just heard the bridegroom may be re-assigned to a different sub thus making him underwater at the proposed time of the wedding LOL. watch this space.

thanks for advice MrsBe, I know Singapore airport well. tbh, i prefer to fly via LA these days especially as I have friends there. Personally I just find it an easier journey altho I know some people hate that route.

Booowilla, we should certainly discuss. D'you know make and model of yours?

We got dd the maxi cosi tobi for £160 in the summer. hoping it will take her thru to your dd's age as well.

i've got in mind a max of £50 depending on make/model etc.

let me know.

working from home sitting on bedroom floor getting numb bum.

off to see family law solicitor soon to discuss dh's ex and skids. should be interesting!

Boowila · 19/10/2006 10:07

I have no idea on make/model. The mentioned carseat sits in DH's car. When DS was born I bought two new car seats, and of course put them both in MY car.

He has two. One is a bebe confort black (but it is older and nore used) and the other is a sort of orange/rust color and I can't remember the make. It's not top of line, but not a piece of crap either. I'll talk to DH and see if he wants to depart with one for a few quid. I think I'd probably only ask you for say £40.

I'll see if he can go out to the car and take a couple pics so I can send them to you before tonight and you can tell me if you're interested. He and the card are in Birmingham so I can't do it myself, and the car seats won't be in my car tonight.

FiziWhiziLetsGetScary · 19/10/2006 13:40

okay cool, thanks!

pics would be good, we can discuss tonight. £40 is very reasonable

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 19/10/2006 14:19

Say Boowila, did the photos make it to Chicago whilst you were there?

Boowila · 19/10/2006 15:12

I damn. Photos. I have been meaning to e-mail you but I keep procrastinating... Yes, they made it. I'm off to the e-mail now...

Boowila · 19/10/2006 15:28

Have emailed you now.

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 20/10/2006 11:24

have I managed to kill this thread too?

foxinbubblesletsmaketrouble · 20/10/2006 18:38

No, I'm here . Tomorrow, the Escale thread will be history!!

quokka · 20/10/2006 19:08

Boowila I haven't heard from the nanny nextdoor - sorry

spooxooky · 20/10/2006 20:54

sorry - forget which one is general chat thread.

OK, I need advice: I ma looking for a part time job. I have an interview and need to work out hours I can work, which depends on how easy it is to get a good childminder who can collect 2 kids from school/ nursery and mind them for say 3 hrs each day.
Given that I am new to this working malarkey, I need some old hands advice. Am I living in the real world? Does such an angel exist? If so, how do I get her and any idaes on copst (so I can work out if it is worth actually going to work!).

Help!!!!!!

MrsBeDreadingTrickOrTreat · 20/10/2006 22:54

THIS is the general chit-chat thread

as for cm as suggested on other thread, check at school gate or put a note up in the local shops. DD's school is bad in so far that there are so many people needing childcare and not enough spaces with cm's, however for part-time job it should be easier.

I still haven't heard re my potential part time job so here's hoping for MOnday. By which time I'll have absolutely no finger nails left!

As the December meet thread is already going who's still up for a meet on 10 November?

foxinbubblesletsmaketrouble · 21/10/2006 07:38

MrsD - 10 November should be OK for me too

TBH I am so absolutely nackered at the moment that my social life doesn't exist - I just can't be bothered to arrange anything, so MN meet ups at least get me out of the house. Its funny I can't be bothered to arrange to meet my friends, but feel excited a the prospect of MN meet ups isn't it?

Think it must be the overwhelming hormones and hence a desire only to speak with people who want to discuss babies and small people!

foxinbubblesletsmaketrouble · 21/10/2006 07:41

ps Spooxoky - also, if you call the Children's Information Service, they'll send you a list of childminders with vacancies.

When I last did this, I noticed that most childminders do actually list which schools they'll drop off/collect from.
