Moving to Wroughton near Swindon

I am moving to Wroughton next month and am trying to find out what goes on when and where for little ones. I have two sons, one just over 2.5 years and the other is 2 months old.

I am interested in activities to do with either boys during term time. I am also interested in postnatal exercise and meeting other mums in the area.

Locks I live in Wroughton with 2 DD's aged 2 and 4 - there is a good toddler group on Mon and Fri am called Busy Bees, plus a Thur am group called little swans - can get all the details at the Library. Also the 2 pre-schools have 2 year old session on a Tues and Thr pm. Local parks and soft plays are good also.

Good luck for the move

PanicPants · 19/06/2006 14:46

Jamese - what did you say to get your message deleted?!

38's not that old. I'm 32 next week.

Anyone else interested in meeting up?

jamese · 19/06/2006 15:19

Panic Pants - I asked for the message to be deleted as I realised that I had showed exactly where my house is.... Not that I think that anyone on MN is dodgy or anything, but realised that is anyone in real life read it they would instanstly realise who I was. And I am not sure what other postings I have made in the past.. might has slagged off sister in law etc....

PanicPants · 19/06/2006 15:22

Ah I see, you do need to be careful of what you might let slip don't you.

Locks · 20/06/2006 11:32

Sorry, not been on here for a while - DH working all weekend (in Wroughton) and I have had the kids and trying to keep the house tidy for viewings.

Thanks to all those that have replied since my last posting (this seems to have been quite a popular thread).

Wroughton is a huge improvement on the area I currently live in and I feel so much better each time I visit. The air is cleaner and the people I have met have been really friendly. I start to feel down about the time I get to Reading and it just gets worse from there on. I know I am looking at it through rose tinted spectacles at the moment, but I am really excited about the move, although I will miss my friends here (but it is only an hour away).

We are going to have the house demo this Friday and should hopefully find out when we are moving - solicitors are holding everything up at the moment.

DS1 is going to the nursery in Old Town Swindon as it is linked to DHs worked. That seems to be quite a nice size town. I am also looking forward to going to Marlborough, although I will be window shopping in the expensive shops Wink

OP posts:
PanicPants · 20/06/2006 11:53

Marlborough is lovely, you've also got Devizes to visit as well (cheaper version of Marlborough) which has the canel and all the locks (very apt!).

My Mum was born in Wroughton and lived in the high street (near the top of the hill).

Good Luck with the move xx

jamese · 20/06/2006 14:25

Hi Locks, is the Nursery called The Trees? If so that is where my DD goes 2 mornings a week, it is superb, I have been very impressed.

Hope the moving goes smoothly. I can't comment on moving from friends etc as I have always been in Swindon - although we are moving away in a couple of years time..

Locks · 20/06/2006 20:04

No it is the Leapfrog nursery by the golf course, we looked at the Trees and were impressed with it, in the end our decision was based on financial reasons as we liked them all.

Where are you moving to jamese? I don't think it has sunk in yet that I am moving to a new area yet, but I live close to the M4 at the moment and it is 1 hour door to door from my new house to my old house so we can visit quite easily.

OP posts:
jamese · 21/06/2006 07:33

I know that nursery - we had DD down to go there when I thought that I would be going back to work Part Time. I didn't go back so she didn't need to go there.

now she goes to the Trees as her friend went there and I can walk to pick her up..

We are thinking about moving up to the Wirral so be nearer to DH brother etc, but not made up our minds totally as to where. We may end up going South....

I have always lived in Swindon, but DH is not from here and I always promised we would move away eventually..

PanicPants · 21/06/2006 12:38

Journey2 - My emails not working at the moment, although I'll try again later on today.

In case it still won't let me in, it's my birthday on Monday so I won't be able to meet then. Dp's having the day off and I'm hoping he'll take me somewhere nice! (Yeah right!)

sn4ho · 21/06/2006 13:17

Hi - I'm a mum from wootton bassett (next village to wroughton) and have a great way you could all meet up!

call Helen 01793 848706 for more info
www.trulymadlybaby.co.uk (ref sn4ho)
hope you don't think this is a bit cheeky - it really is a great way to meet!!

Locks · 23/06/2006 23:51

That would be nice to be able to walk to nursery, where we are living we are cut off a bit, but I think the bus does go past our estate.

We went to be shown round the new house today - hopefully we get the keys next week if the solicitor pulls their finger out.

We drove to Marlborough and it looks really nice, my Mum says she use to go there alot when she lived in Wiltshire as a young girl.

Jamese does your DH not like the area or does he just want to be closer to his family? I don't think we would have moved if it wasn't for DH job, although we can now afford a bigger home than if we stayed where we are now.

We accepted an offer on our old house yesterday which hit home again that we are defintely leaving. I will have to start thinking about packing up now, but that should be easier than having the house in a state to show people - I do not recommend trying to sell with a toddler!

jamese · 25/06/2006 14:17

Locks, no my DH doesn't like it in Swindon at all.. I have to admit it has changed over the years and I won't be sad to leave. There are definately nice places to live now.

Not trying to put you off at all... Wroughton is nice with good schools (another reason we are going, schools in swindon NOT good). Ridgeway always comes up near the top in the area so you will be ok.

I guess most places change over the years, but I think Swindon has got too big, and there seems to be more trouble her than before (probably same everywhere)..

We want to be by the coast so that is why I have agreed to move (any the fact that both my parents have passed away - mum only recently) and this place doesn't do it for me anymore).

Hope the move goes well.. We only moved house last year but much harder with a toddler...

Steppy1 · 25/06/2006 18:44

Good luck with the move...and thanks for your good words about the PN class PP, really glad you enjoyed it !!! We're just up the hill from Wroughton in a small Village near Broad Hinton, there's lots to do...and of course one of the few areas with a dedicated night out for mums (www.funkymamas.co.uk)..hope that some of you can make it in the future !!!! Lots of play areas, childrens activites at the Leisure centres in Swindon (toddler bounce, baby gym, swimming lessons etc) as well as the usual Tumble Tots (held in Wooton bassett and throughout Swindon)...would be great to get a mumsnetter group together ...anybody up for it ? My DD is 3, DS started school last September so is 5....and I'm an "old bird" at 42 .....!

Locks · 25/06/2006 20:54

Can I have the details of the PN exercise class please?

We are glad to be leaving this area for similiar reasons that you want to leave Swindon. I think most places have got worse over the years, we also want to get away from the pollution, we really notice it now that we are travelling between the two places.

My parents have just moved to the coast and it is really nice to be able to visit them. I am making good use of that in the run up to the move.

I am sure you will find somewhere where you will be happy

Steppy1 · 27/06/2006 12:48

Hi Locks

there are 2 PN exercise classes that we run. Currently running is our post natal Body balance, combination of Tai Chi Yoga and Pilates then the Fitness after birth course (6 sessions) which Panic Pants (love that name !!) raved about...it's a different session every week. All sessions run on a monday starting at 11am and are based at Cannons Health centre on teh Greenbridge retail park (about 15 mins from where you'll be ) if you want more info then give me a call on 01793 731046 (work number)

PanicPants · 28/06/2006 20:57

Hi all, It's a shame that Swindon has got a bad name but I have to say that I really like it (and I'm a teacher so not all schools are terrible!)

I used to live in Liverpool, and also lived in Devizes for 5 years and moved back willingly - so It's not all bad.

Hi Steppy, I didn't know you had a lo of 2, still a baby really. I went on Monday and was a bit worried when we did my rec check, as it's still 1-2 finger widths apart. Does that mean it'll never go back again properly. *** looked a bit worried but told me hers didn't meet up and her lo (!) is 19!

jamese · 29/06/2006 09:36

Panic Pants, I didn't mean to bad mouth Swindon, I have lived her all my life. but it isn't the same as it used to be. It may be the same everywhere but I guess we will have to move to find out...

Swindon does have a lot to offer, never be bored, at any age. but just feel it is time to move on (well in a couple of years)...

Re schools, no not all bad, but does depends on where you live etc. Do you teach junior or senior?

Would still be interested in a met up though..

Locks · 29/06/2006 18:55

We get the keys to our new house tomorrow!! We aren't moving in for another couple of weeks (the weekend after the World Cup final), but I can start to get things sorted now which is a huge relief. Everything has been in limbo, but now I can get my telephone line sorted so that I can move my business equipment over which is the most critical thing.

This week has been stressful with solicitors and the builders and what should have been straightforward has been unnecessarily complicated. But get through the next month and it will all be worth it

OP posts:
jamese · 29/06/2006 20:16

Good luck with the move. I think it is better to do it over a couple of weeks than try to move in the same day as the other person is moving out. (that is hard work).

I am sure you will enjoy living in Wroughton.
Hope we get to met up sometime.

PanicPants · 29/06/2006 20:46

Ooh how exciting getting the keys Locks, it won't be long now until you move.

Jamese - I teach primary age children. Swindon is a strange town (probably like any other) in that lovely areas are next door to not so nice areas.

Yep, still interested in a meet up.

Come on, someone be brave and suggest a time and place!!
I'm going away for a week on the 8th July, so how about sometime in the last 2 weeks of July?

jamese · 30/06/2006 10:29

Any ideas where to met up? I have the problem that I don't drive so that does limit me... Although there is a reasonably good bus service...

Not sure where the best place would be though. Am happy to meet last 2 weeks of July, I can't do Monday or Thursday mornings (nursery) but any other time is ok (especially as everything else we do stops for the school holidays...

Can someone suggest somewhere? where do people normally meet up with people they don't know (yet)????

Locks · 30/06/2006 13:16

We now officially own a house in Wroughton!!

I would suggest somewhere, but I don't know the area yet. Is there a soft play place? That might be a good place as the kids can go mad and we can sit and have a chat.

I will be officially moving the weekend of the 15th, but after that I don't know when will be the best day until I am in my new routine so am happy to fit in with what other people can do.

OP posts:
Steppy1 · 04/07/2006 11:16

..how about a picnic at Lydiard park if the weather is as glorious as it is now !!!! Lydiard also have a childrens play area...or Kids Aloud if it's tipping down...both West Swindon...how about 27th July (gives you time to unpack the boxes, Locks !!!)

If any of you are interested we (Funky Mamas !!) are featured in the Swindon advertiser today....really awful picture though ...highly embarrassed (though NOT about the article !!!)
