Starting Keto Newbies

Hey!

Starting Keto from tomorrow. Wedding is in 7 months! I lost a bit of weight before Xmas, but in these last two weeks it's piled back on quite drastically :/ saw a photo of myself today and I looked like a balloon!

My cousin started keto in May 2023 and has lost over 2 stone. From 11st 4 to 9st! This gave me the kick up the butt to do this. I'm not only doing this for my wedding, as I genuinely want to feel slimmer but it'll be a bonus if I can lose a stone or 2 to fit nicely into my wedding dress. Currently - 12st 13lb (might as well call it 13st) mummy of two boys (3 and 2) so tough to lose baby weight!

I'm so new to it though and trying to educate myself on what I must do. I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself though or fixate on numbers because that tends to freak me out and I give up.

Would love to meet anyone else on here who is thinking to do the same this year.

Speak soon. Flowers

Yes, this has been one long month. 6 weeks as we got paid early!

I feel a lot better for dropping out Stevia, so its a fresh start for me today, new month, gym again, and no messing about with the diet now. I haven't really made any progress this month so now I'm on it properly.

Stats now are:
W: 14st 4lb 2oz
FBG: 12.7

I'm planning to really strip it back for a week to kick start my resolve. Almost carnivore levels. An eating window of 12-8, eggs, cheese, avocado for breakfast, and protein for dinner. I'll still have onion, garlic, and mushrooms. I have a lot of mince in the freezer so might have a lot of burgers and kofte type sauages, hence still eating mushrooms, as I add those to my burgers. This really worked for me previously and is what I've been aiming to get back to so I'll aim for a week and see if I can make it stick.

When I did that before my hunger dropped away so much, I was about to consider dropping the breakfast and going to OMAD.

Then, I went away for work for nearly a week, there was no provision for my low carb request, I don't know if they thought it was faddy, and thats been me since, unable to get back into it properly (I did visit home for 3 weeks after too, with all the takeaways and things we can't get in spain so that didn't help). And that was when the GP told me my levels were so normal, she thinks I was diagnosed diabetic incorrectly (based on a hAbc1). Now look at them 🙄

Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'm aiming for a good week, a good month, and getting back into healthy choices.

I made it to the gym yesterday, I did functional circuits which near killed me, and tonight I'm going to body pump. There are no classes on the weekend, but you can use the gym and equipment.

So yesterday I had:
Handful of nuts, a pack of salted seaweed.
1 h/m burger, a couple of sausages, 1/2 avocado.

So far today:

1 sausage, 1 fried egg, 1/2 avocado, a little bit of jamon, a tiny bit of cheese.
Sunflower seeds - not on plan.
A handful of peanuts.
Not sure what I'll have tonight, maybe a bit of scrambled egg and jamon.

My blood sugar was down to 10.7 this morning (12.7 yesterday) and weight the same as yesterday.

swimmingdory · 02/02/2024 20:38

Glad to hear you're still at it @lukiebebe it's such a challenge planning a wedding but so good to see it pull off! How long till you get married?

@Gobolina your sugars seem to be lower so well done it's clearly working. Sure they were near 15 at the start of this thread so a fantastic result! Well done on making the gym too!

Wish I had some more energy am just bloody knackered and starving all the time atm. Still sticking to it though I'm having to fight harder and harder as I'm craving pasta and garlic bread. Think I'm a bit hormonal as my boobs are sore. Made a keto pizza tonight using bases from seriously low carb which has sort of hit the spot for a bit. Been a long week! Quiet weekend ahead x

Keto is great for weight loss but carbs pop up in pretty much everything so you do need to track consistently, or at least until you get used to it. I just use my fitness pal and can track all macros that way. Keto recommends under 20g carbs a day - this is reallllly low. I had success with starting at 40g per day and gradually reducing as hunger subsided.

A friend from India suggested me to try
https://www.ketoforindia.com/indian-keto-diet-plan/
this keto diet plan last year. I have been thinking about this diet regime, but my concerns are:

  1. How sustainable is this diet?
  2. Can it lead to nutrient deficiency?

@Greentomatoes21 How different is low-carb diet from ketogenic diet?

Hey all,

I have been absent as i completely fell off the wagon on Thursday! Back to day one today! I have eaten everything and anything i could get my hands on 😥 4 pounds put on but hoping i can lose this quite quickly after starting fresh today!

Hoping i can continue to do as well as i was doing!!

TeenDivided · 05/02/2024 19:01

Just popping on to say I have been doing keto for 6 months now.

My aim/target when I first saw the GP was to lose a pound a week so to lose 4 stone in a year.

In 6 months on keto I have lost 4 stone. Grin
I will celebrate this by enjoying pancake day.

My next aim/target is to lose a pound a week for 6 months to lose 2 more stone.

I don't do any tracking / measuring of food, calories etc - too stressful for me!

MorningWalk · 05/02/2024 19:51

Hey @TeenDivided thats amazing well done you!

Can i ask if you have had any cheat days in that time and how it affected you if so?

I started jan 1st and managed to lose 16lb. Fell off the wagon Thursday and have had a really bad 4 days completely binging! Started again today! X

swimmingdory · 05/02/2024 21:31

Well done for getting back to it @MorningWalk it's not easy. I was struggling so much last week think my hormones are finally settling a bit though. I've really got to knock off the dark chocolate to move my scales!

@TeenDivided that's a fantastic result well done. I echo the questions asked.

I like to feed the bootcamp threads too if you don't. There's some motivated people and good ideas on there. Don't keep up enough to join, nor be strict enough, but if you're obsessive and need the focus like me it's a good place to start x

I guess it depends what you mean by 'cheat days'.
I was very strict for the first 8 weeks or so.

Otherwise if we are eg having a roast dinner which is every 7-10 days I may have 1 small yorkshire pudding or 3 small roast potatoes (before it would have been 2 yorkies and limitless pots).
If DD and DH are having cheesecake I will have the tiniest sliver I can cut just to have a taste. If DD asks me to break chocolate I will take a small amount as a tax.
I went out to lunch last week with my parents and had a mini dessert (choc brownie).
And various other similar examples.
I also relaxed over Christmas and maintained over the week/fortnight rather than gaining or losing.

But what I am not doing is: Hot chocolate for breakfast, biscuits and chocolate as snacks, cake, pasta, rice, desserts, microwave meals, pastries etc in coffee shops.

@swimmingdory If I have dark chocolate open in the house, I eat it. I can't just have 1 square.

swimmingdory · 06/02/2024 08:13

@TeenDivided your last two paragraphs about sum me up. I need to knock it off and also the bloody fizzy pop. Again.

swimmingdory · 06/02/2024 08:14

Last night though we did heck sausages with creamed leeks broccoli and cauliflower it was lovely and soooo filling.

MorningWalk · 06/02/2024 08:32

@TeenDivided i have also been very strict but when i say fell off the wagon i mean your last paragraph. I went back to my old ways of drinking/eating absolutely anything i wanted/saw. Probably ate and drank more then usual because i thought 'this may be my only chance to have it before I'm Good again'

Put 4lb on But jumped back on yesterday. Scales have taken me back to weight before the binge as i presume water weight! Just got to keep it off now! Im due on so im blaming last week on hormonal eating. Just have to learn for next month!!!

Gobolina · 06/02/2024 10:52

I have been off the wagon too. No great surprise. I am starting again tomorrow. Again 🙄

I sound like a proper flake but once I get past the first 5 days and am in the zone I actually do really well, but I have no events now until June I think so no distractions now.

MorningWalk · 06/02/2024 15:00

@Gobolina you can absolutely do it. Lets all stay vocal as i find that really helps me stay on track. Currently out for a quick walk before the school run. I like to have at least an hour but got completely side tracked today and have been so busy! I need to make sure i prioritise time for exercise x

swimmingdory · 09/02/2024 08:45

Morning @Gobolina @MorningWalk how are you both doing? Not sure how you're getting to June with nothing in my diary goes crazy come end of March. There's a keto event on in Bristol end of the month and I've booked tickets for me and other half to go wander round that.

I'm still plodding through. Still craving garlic bread 😂 forgot to weigh this morning but weight still staying static really. Up 4lb after a weekend then back down in week. Too much gin lol and will repeat again tonight!

Am def less bloated though, you can see that in my face neck and shoulders. Really wish I had some energy to move myself in exercise but I'm just not there yet!

How are you doing @lukiebebe?? And everyone else?

Gobolina · 09/02/2024 09:04

I'm doing ok, haven't been to the gym this week, I'll go back on monday, and I'm signing up for 3 months and my friend that goes is a proper motivator. I do have one lunch with this friend but it will be a healthy, on plan one. Other than that, no birthdays I have to attend etc.

MorningWalk · 09/02/2024 19:33

I have been doing ok the last few days, day/night out for a very good friends birthday tomorrow so i am going to absolutely blow it. I just no i am so no point in trying not to! Fresh start again Sunday! I no i shouldn't have that attitude but i will be absolutely kidding myself if i think i wont blow it because i no what im like. Serious head back on for a fresh week!!

Gobolina · 11/02/2024 18:01

How have you got on today @MorningWalk?

Gobolina · 12/02/2024 08:47

I'm back on it. I went to spin at 7.30 this morning, I'm booked for bodypump tomorrow at 7.30, spin again on Wed then bodypump in the morning or step class in the evening on Thursday, I haven't decided yet. Friday I could shift my hours and start and finish an hour earlier and go to latin dance in the afternoon.

I'm planning on having a small chop I had left over from yesterday and a small h/m wrap, then h/m burgers or omelette for dinner. This week will be much the same each day, I have a bit of dough that my DH made, left over to use up, then once that is gone I'm off the carbs completely.

BG was 12.5 this morning and weight was 14st 9lb 2oz, but I was 14 6 on friday so its carb blaot, not real weight gain.

How's everyone else doing/whats your plans for the week?

Gobolina · 13/02/2024 08:51

Hows everyone doing? Anyone managed to get back into the swing of it?

I went to bodypump this morning and paid up for 3 months.

Am planning on having eggs and avocado for breakfast and spag bol for dinner, I'll slice and boil some leeks I've got to have as 'spaghetti'.

My BG was 10.9 this morning, down from 12.5 yesterday, but weight is the same. I've found previously I can even gain weight when I start exercise which is BS but I'm going to try to concentrate on getting my hormones/BG in check in first.

lukiebebe · 13/02/2024 12:00

Hello everyone gosh sorry I have been rubbish on here.

I fell off the wagon for a couple of weeks. Missed pasta and chocs so went a bit hardcore! It was around my monthly time too so my emotions were all over the place.

Started back on it this week. Started running again too so hopefully I can stick to it!

I've just really missed carbs :( I was getting bored of meat.

Trying my best! I hope all is well with you all.

@swimmingdory the keto event sounds so cool! Let us know how it goes!

@Gobolina well done on the motivation for exercise! I hope I can take a leaf out of your book!
Fiancé and I may sign up for a 10k for the 25th Feb! So hopefully that'll motivate me to keep
Going for runs most mornings! I may try to body pump tonight !!

OP posts:
Gobolina · 14/02/2024 11:02

@lukiebebe Wow, a 10k, in such short time too! I feel that about missing carbs, I find bread or just quick snacks the hardest to give up. I don't really miss pasta anymore, or rice, its mainly a takeaway I miss now.

I went to spin this morning. Feeling much much better for getting back to it.I'm strangely feeling less hungry since starting too.

Had leeketti and bolognaise last night, and will have the same tonight, as there was loads left over, I'be put 2 portions in the freezer though. I'm about to make an omelette for breakfast.

BG was 10.1 and weight was 14st 6lb 6oz this morning.

lukiebebe · 14/02/2024 11:25

@Gobolina oh I know tell me
About it haha I may regret it but it's for charity so I'm certain there will be lots of people walking and running.

Did a run this morning and ran the longest in ages which was great!

Well done for going to spin! Love a good spin class! Keep it up !!

Leeketti ! Never tried that ! Who knew how many veggies you can make spaghetti from!

I'm having an omelette in a bit too! Looking forward to it actually as have had boiled eggs all week so far!

Hope everyone else is well.

Gobolina · 14/02/2024 12:04

@lukiebebe Well done, are you doing c25k?

Gobolina · 16/02/2024 09:19

Anyone have plans for the weekend? I'm meeting a friend for lunch but its going to be healthy. Might swim too, possibly saturday AND sunday, not sure yet.

I'm going to the gym this afternoon, and might do two classes, a cardio and bodypump, I'll see how I feel after the cardio class.

Diet is still doing well, BG was 10.0 this morning, and weight is still 14st 4lb 8oz so no change from yesterday.
