Starting Keto Newbies

Hey!

Starting Keto from tomorrow. Wedding is in 7 months! I lost a bit of weight before Xmas, but in these last two weeks it's piled back on quite drastically :/ saw a photo of myself today and I looked like a balloon!

My cousin started keto in May 2023 and has lost over 2 stone. From 11st 4 to 9st! This gave me the kick up the butt to do this. I'm not only doing this for my wedding, as I genuinely want to feel slimmer but it'll be a bonus if I can lose a stone or 2 to fit nicely into my wedding dress. Currently - 12st 13lb (might as well call it 13st) mummy of two boys (3 and 2) so tough to lose baby weight!

I'm so new to it though and trying to educate myself on what I must do. I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself though or fixate on numbers because that tends to freak me out and I give up.

Would love to meet anyone else on here who is thinking to do the same this year.

Speak soon. Flowers

Also debating not weighing myself just yet. I know roughly what I was before Christmas, I'm now probably quite a few pounds higher.

The first week is usually big as it's water, then it's lower or stays the same. It can be quite disheartening when you've been strict and the scales don't move but that's normal for this whilst your body adapts, it's still frustrating though so I might stay away from scales and focus on clothes. Already feel less bloated.

PossumintheHouse · 04/01/2024 09:58

Don’t weight yourself for the first week (apart from the first day of course).
Drink a lot of water.
Don't bother with Carb Manager - it’s a huge faff and often not even that accurate.
If you fancy a drink, a white spirit with tonic is best.
Try to avoid fizzy drinks.
Always check sausages for their content - loads aren’t Keto suitable.
Avoid too much salt.

ChampooPapi · 04/01/2024 10:10

Joining as started on Monday, stupidly haven’t got scales so won’t be able to weigh myself until I get to the gym next week. Doing dry January as well. What is everyone eating for breakfast? Or is skipping breakfast preferable with Keto?

ChampooPapi · 04/01/2024 10:11

I’m around 12 stone and plan is to get down to 10, i’m 5.8 so this is an ideal weight for me

I tend to skip breakfast but pretty much always have done I don't feel like eating first thing.

If you need breakfast though I would go with eggs or full fat Greek yoghurt.

For anyone who hasn't tried it by the way you have to try Longley Farms full fat cottage cheese. It is like no other cottage cheese, it's not sour lumps in juice, it's thick, creamy and delicious.

ChampooPapi · 04/01/2024 16:09

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain i’ll go for the greek yoghurt option as I tend to feel queasy if I skip breakfast. That cottage cheese is the bomb! Once you try it, all others pale in comparison

Seriously, I feel like I should get some kind of endorsement deal I recommend it so often 😂

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2024 16:48

By the way Longley farm can be quite hard to find but weirdly I've been getting it in Poundland! It is indeed the only cottage cheese for me!

Asda, Morrisons, Homebargains and sometimes Iceland stock it.

lukiebebe · 04/01/2024 18:20

@swimmingdory your food all sounds delicious! I'm deffo going to make cauliflower steaks!
You've inspired me with a few dinners there for sure! Keep it coming haha.

Today I had the left over turkey mince with veggies on a lettuce cup again, handful of almonds and then for a bit peckish and had a bit of Greek yogurt with blueberries and raspberries but kept the portion size small.

I'm fasting with keto too trying to do 12-8 (I'd do earlier but I want to be able to have dinner with my fiancé when he gets home from work) I didn't find it too hard today as I was busy with and filled myself up with espressos and water.

This evening I've made Brussels, crispy bacon and walnuts in a buttery sauce
To have with beef steak and may throw a fried egg on again.

@Greentomatoes21 amazing ! That's inspiring! Hope you had a good day today.

@MorningWalk amazing yay! We can do this!! And yes I totally hear you on getting hooked weighing especially when it's good news each morning haha.

Hope you had a good day so far!!

@AccidentallyWesAnderson hey all the best on your return to keto! Thanks for the list of meal ideas they sound delicious! I hope you enjoy your curry tonight ! Deffo need to make a curry soon craving one after reading that! Because I'm fasting 12-8 I also seem to only have two main meals and a little snack in between! Surprisingly I am full!

Usually I used to have oats in morning, snack, big lunch (always had a card involved) more snacking and then dinner ! It's crazy how full I'm feeling now! Some days I'd be so hungry, despite eating a lot, and would just eat a plain wrap to fill the space haha!

@PossumintheHouse thank you!!! Good to know about fizzy drinks too. Fiancé and I are going to a birthday party tomorrow and it's at a bar! I really don't know what to drink??? Gin and tonic? Help! I fancy a tipple! Or do I need to cut it out completely and just have water 😂

OP posts:
lukiebebe · 04/01/2024 18:30

@ChampooPapi welcome and all the best with the journey! Keep us posted!

Likewise I don't do breakfast as I'm doing fasting 12-8 are my eating windows. I do love breaky but I haven't actually missed it! Some people add cottage cheese to their eggs too!

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain thanks for sharing the cottage cheese I may ask fiancé to pop to HB and get some because I cannot face the lumpy kind Envy

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2024 19:54

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain we don't have an Iceland or an Asda and Morrisons here never has it in stock. Hence my cheers at finding it in Poundland! We have every other supermarket and all the posh ones too and I kept popping into Morrisons just to try and find it- !!

MorningWalk · 04/01/2024 20:00

@lukiebebe thank you. Days been good. First day back at work for me today and i have an active job (on my feet all day) i have gone over on calories today and fats but still under 20g carbs and stuck to protein macros. Felt very hungry today! X

Greentomatoes21 · 04/01/2024 21:35

Decent day today. I'm another one who finds it quite motivating to weigh daily 🫣 I have digital scales and usually weigh in stone, but if my weight has stayed the same in stones and lb, I can click a button to change it to just lbs. In that scenario, it gives me a decimal and generally it is lower than the day before. E.g. 140.8 then next day 140.4 And then I feel motivated ha ha.

MorningWalk · 05/01/2024 08:12

Lunch prepped for today. Chorizo , Egg and roasted cauliflower salad. Got some peppers in there also with a dollop of sour cream on top x

swimmingdory · 05/01/2024 08:18

So we went out last night for bowling. I managed to stay relatively ok I think. I had a few nuts to snack on, they were coated but the best option available and then a few too many vodka and diet cokes. We grabbed a Chinese on way home and shared some dry spare ribs, chicken yuk sung and beef in black bean so think overall we managed ok.

But... I've got no lunch sorted for today so may just grab a couple of eggs and an avocado and make scrambled eggs at work as a plan b. Dinner is either butter chicken or fajitas on lettuce cups. Not sure which yet.

Funny how we're all different with how to weigh. I like to weigh daily but then I can find it demotivating if it goes up in reaction to what I eat. I wonder if I could last or try keeping it further apart than a week? I doubt it 😂

Few more new people so hi 👋🏻 good to have more friendly faces to keep us focussed and inspired.

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain @ChampooPapi I've only ever tried cottage cheese once but it was like you described and disgusting. Open to try again but what do you have cottage cheese with? Particularly interested as I think I need to try and work on some fat based meals mine seem to be protein focused

MorningWalk · 05/01/2024 08:23

@swimmingdory just be careful with Chinese as the sauce contain lots of sugar and usually foods have lots of cornstarch. Sounds amazing though! 😂

lukiebebe · 05/01/2024 08:36

Morning all!!

I weighed again lol my fiancé was rolling his eyes at me and said he will hide the scales.. but yesterday was 12 9 and today 12 8... it does help to motivate when it goes down because I haven't seen 12 8 in a very long time!

It pushed me to go on the exercise bike so I'm currently on it now trying to reach 10k before work!

Cottage cheese can be added to scrambled eggs for extra protein! I'm deffo going to try this brand you all
Mention and let you know!

Today I haven't prepped much whoops! Fiancé boiled me some eggs so may have them with avocado and a few cubes of cheddar at 12 as fasting. Dinner will be chicken breasts stuff with mozzarella and chorizo and some veggies on the side !

My water intake has improved ever so slightly! I used to drink 500 mls a day (so bad! And sometimes not even that) but yesterday I managed 1 1/2 L. I will get there! After this exercise im certain I'll drink more today.

I'm out tonight so stuck on what I can drink!

@swimmingdory I like cottage cheese on ryvita or jacket potato, with the Longley Farms stuff I can happily just eat it by the spoonful as a quick snack. It can also be used to make pancakes www.thekitchn.com/cottage-cheese-pancakes-263223

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 05/01/2024 09:05

I can eat practically anything but always avoided cottage cheese. My mate used to have loads on her jacket potatoes but obviously that's out. Might try and hunt this brand down and give it a bash for the protein!

ChampooPapi · 05/01/2024 09:53

Thank you for the welcome @lukiebebe 💜.

I’m the opposite with weighing and do it every couple of weeks sometimes more, I muat weigh myself soon though so I get some kind of ‘starting’ weight.

Did greek yoghurt for breakfast and feeling good.

Regarding the cottage cheese, i have been known with that brand to spoon straight from the pot 😂

ChampooPapi · 05/01/2024 09:55

They sell in Morisons normally, though Morisons are not exactly famous for restocking promply on things they run out of! Lots of health food places sell it too though
