Starting Keto Newbies

lukiebebe · 01/01/2024 18:57

Hey!

Starting Keto from tomorrow. Wedding is in 7 months! I lost a bit of weight before Xmas, but in these last two weeks it's piled back on quite drastically :/ saw a photo of myself today and I looked like a balloon!

My cousin started keto in May 2023 and has lost over 2 stone. From 11st 4 to 9st! This gave me the kick up the butt to do this. I'm not only doing this for my wedding, as I genuinely want to feel slimmer but it'll be a bonus if I can lose a stone or 2 to fit nicely into my wedding dress. Currently - 12st 13lb (might as well call it 13st) mummy of two boys (3 and 2) so tough to lose baby weight!

I'm so new to it though and trying to educate myself on what I must do. I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself though or fixate on numbers because that tends to freak me out and I give up.

Would love to meet anyone else on here who is thinking to do the same this year.

Speak soon. Flowers

@Crikeyalmighty heya! Thanks for this... I made cauliflower mash the other day but it did not work it went grainy and sloppy it was gross! Any tips for making it creamy and smooth would be great!

@Prinnny hello! Your food sounds yummy! Like the Mc Ds idea next time we have one!

Halloumi wraps which wraps do you use?

That almond pork was bastardised from here Pork in Almond Sauce (Carne en salsa de almendras) - The Happy Foodie thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/pork-in-almond-sauce-carne-en-salsa-de-almendras/

I had another good day.
4 green tea
2.5l water
Tuna mayo, cheese, gherkins, pickled onion, cornichon, pork crunch.
Air fried boiled egg.
Almond pork, air fried green beans with butter.
Greek yoghurt with nuts, frozen. That was good but next time I'd not forget about it stir it regularly and add a sachet of stevia.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/01/2024 21:40

@lukiebebe
I steam cauli in the steamer- tip it into a bowl and just add about 1/4 of a pot of philli and use the masher- it does have more 'texture' than a very smooth mash, but mine isn't sloppy

swimmingdory · 12/01/2024 06:50

@Gobolina what did you do with the red cabbage when you had sausage? Might try sausage and cauliflower mash this week maybe with the Phili like @Crikeyalmighty suggests.

@PossumintheHouse I love sushi! What do you choose when you go there. My youngest loves sushi and wants to go to a restaurant but I've been delaying as I wasn't sure what to choose. So like the rice lol. Wow! 8 years? Bit 🤯 that you've done for so long tbh. Well done.

@abbey44 I love celeriac as chips so sweet. Never tried as a soup so may give that a go. Miss my soup in the cold days.

Well done for sticking with it in maccies @Prinnny no mean feat.

@lukiebebe don't be too hard on yourself. The plan is hard and wedding planning is hard. Just don't beat yourself up and head into self destruct. Draw a line and move on. Progress not perfection.

I did ok yesterday. Still have hunger seems to sneak up quickly but also food is satisfying without bloat. Lunch was salmon leftovers and for dinner we made pizza with the bases from low carb con it was really tasty. Didn't think one would be enough but it was so that's today's lunch. Weekend will be tougher as no kids so much alcohol planned.. I've ordered a Camembert though for nibbly food stuff. Not doing great with fasting now the school run is back as missing a hot drinks after (I don't like tea or coffee so tend to have a low ish carb hot chocolate or a hot orange juice). Still, overall I'm remaining low carb just not making the 20g keto levels as yet.

Still need to focus on adding more fat this is def a thing for me to be able to reduce the carbs further I think and not just the protein as I know that isn't great. Has anyone tried fat bombs or keto fudge to do this?

Gobolina · 12/01/2024 07:38

@swimmingdory I just had it raw, like in salad. I ate it on it's own while I was waiting for the rest to cook though.

I get them from skinny foods, think it’s 3g carbs per wrap, they also do bread which is pretty decent too.

MorningWalk · 12/01/2024 21:08

Loving all the recipe ideas! Still feel like im going strong and this thread is really helping to keep me motivated. Getting a bit obsessed with reading everything Keto and listening to podcasts! I have been intermittent fasting and really don't feel hungry much anymore. I have only been eating dinner around 7pm for the last two days and fasting the rest. Also feel like i have tons of energy. I went for a walk today and just kept going. 11.5 kilometres! Very pleased! Dropped 10 pounds since 1st of Jan! Praying it continues falling off! X

swimmingdory · 13/01/2024 06:49

@MorningWalk that's amazing well done. Hoping I get the energy surge soon but not yet. OH said he feels a bit more with it. What podcasts are you listening to?

Yesterday was leftover pizza and grazing on dark chocolate all day. Wasn't too fussed with dinner tbh. Had a spoonful of egg mayo when I was cooking for kids and then we had butter chicken with cauli rice but was more because we felt we needed to eat than needed to if that makes sense.

Few gins last night, more of the same today once I've done my errands. Food will probably be the Camembert later and maybe some eggs for lunch if we don't eat out. OH talked about wanting a Nando's. Got to meal plan a bit too and sort this weeks food shop. May try the edamame pasta from Aldi if I can grab some though we did both enjoy the courgetti with the spag bol tbh.

Do you all meal plan? Do you eat differently or Same to kids. What's your approach.

MorningWalk · 13/01/2024 08:26

@swimmingdory thankyou. Once i see the weight disappearing it gives me motivation to keep going. Im doing dry jan which i think really helps! Drinking lots of herbal teas in the evening and water with electrolytes all day. I just search 'keto' on my spotify and listen to everything. Currently listening to '2 keto Dudes' but have listened to 'Dr Bergs healthy Keto' and 'ketogasm' by Tasha Metcalf. Find listening to them in the car and whilst walking is like therapy and keeps me going.

We had Camembert last night with a rump steak and chorizo, other half had bread but i had celery to dip. Bit of a charcuterie board. I also am buying the M&S half chickens and having them with salad. They are on offer 3 for £12 so a good deal if you ask me with leftovers for lunch x

MorningWalk · 13/01/2024 08:28

I dont have kids at home but work as a nanny. I just plan my lunch so i dont get tempted to pinch their food at lunch and dinner. I have been taking lunch but as i said in previous post the last two days have skipped ass just not hungry! Although you would think it would make me hungry i think the walk in the day keeps me going till dinner. Xx

Gobolina · 13/01/2024 08:52

I'm not sure what's going on for me. Fasting blood glucose was 11 yesterday and 12 this morning so it's going up. Yesterday I had half and avocado, some cheese and a fried egg at lunch and tandoori chicken wings, cauliflower and broccoli for dinner.

I haven't been doing any exercise though as I've felt tired, but I took my last pink pill yesterday so star week should hopefully stop today. This is only my second month on sequential hrt so I'm hoping this tiredness isn't going to be a monthly thing. I'm going to try to catch up with my steps today and see if that makes any difference. If not I'll have to drop out stevia from my tea.

I don't know how long to give it before considering medication.

I'm out at a chinese tonight so going off plan, then I'm going to do a 3 day fast, which will take me to Tuesday evening, though I'll probably go til wednesday at 12. I've fasted before and find it easier than eating little bits here and there.

The way it was explained to me when I had GD is that I had very little control over fasting glucose levels as long as I wasn't eating a massive amount of carbs immediately before bed.

If that was consistently over the limit for a few days then medication was needed. I could effect some control over the after meals numbers by limiting carbs but the numbers first thing in the morning were not diet influenced.

I think t would be worth asking for a review with your diabetes nurse/GP to discuss.

Gobolina · 13/01/2024 09:20

Yes I think I will book an appointment next week. Previously, if my numbers were higher I could bring them down by eating properly and a bit of exercise.

Last year my Dr told me she thinks I was diagnosed incorrectly as my numbers were so good, now I've done this to myself ffs.

BigBoysDontCry · 13/01/2024 10:16

Morning blood glucose levels are often elevated due to the dawn effect so it's difficult to go by those.

Prinnny · 13/01/2024 11:21

We’re eating out at our lovely local Italians tonight so going to fast until then I think, going to have a caprese salad with no balsamic to start and chicken a la crème with roasted veg for main, can’t wait!

Gobolina · 14/01/2024 12:37

BigBoysDontCry · 13/01/2024 10:16

Mine used to regularly be around 4. So this is an increase.

11.4 this morning. Yesterday I had mcdonalds as we were out and about, I had a happy meal with 4 nuggets and swapped the fries for a side salad.

Then in the Chinese we did a set meal with the following:

Salad with a mango/sweet type dressing.
Mongolian beef skewer.
A piece of sushi.
Tempura prawn & veg sticks.
A beef dish.
A prawn dish.
Rice.
Noodles.
Dessert, I had a bit of almond cake with cream.

I haven't eaten anything today, just had tea so am aim for a 24 hour fast (as I haven't done it for a while) that may extend to 3 days.

I'm not worrying about my steps too much atm either as it's been a while since I fasted. I've done 7 days a few times and regularly used to do 3 days, for bg and autophagy reasons.

Gobolina · 14/01/2024 12:40

Oh and there was duck and pancakes and hoisin sauce too.

swimmingdory · 14/01/2024 14:34

Hi everyone. Hope you're having a good weekend. I don't know much about diabetes and blood sugars so not much to contribute there im afraid.

Weekend has been quiet. We went out for lunch yesterday to the harvester. Stick with the tapas thinking I was doing good, halloumi fries, prawns and chicken wings but everything was deep fried in a batter. Didn't say that on the menu. Sent it back and stuck with the salad and blue cheese sauce. We picked last night steak and Camembert and some low carb focaccia with oil and balsamic. Was nice. Much gin lol.

Definitely noticing a change in hunger levels. I'm still grazing on dark chocolate as I'm finding that's really helping. Had poached eggs and avocado on low carb bread just with some smoked salmon and Parma ham. Was absolutely lovely but couldn't eat it all. I've some mince out so thinking I might try like a cheeseburger salad type bowl thing later. Not sure yet.

Gobolina · 14/01/2024 14:41

Ooh Google cheeseburger casserole! It's delicious 😋

Well done sending your fried stuff back, I'd have eaten it 😳 I used to love harvester, we don't have them where I live now.

BigBoysDontCry · 14/01/2024 14:44

Given how restaurants accommodate allergies and lifestyle choice diets such as vegan (which I accept does help people with dairy allergies too). I find it disappointing that there is really very little support for diabetics eating out. Most diabetics need to follow a carb limited diet even if not as strict as keto. This would also be very useful for people trying to lose weight by limiting carbs.

I can mostly find something to have now I eat some carbs, but it generally means ordering the same thing all the time and/or leaving half of it on the plate.

I know they can't cater to everyone but it would be nice to feel there were some better options/thought gone into it.

I guess in a way diabetes is an allergy to sugar as our bodies don't tolerate it.

It obviously depends how often you eat out as to whether you are happy/able to just ignore sugar/carb limits occasionally.

Gobolina · 14/01/2024 15:58

I normally order meat and sides and ask for the fries/rice to be swapped for green veg or salad. In an Indian once I asked if they could do me cauliflower rice instead of normal rice and they did.

Evening. I haven’t done it solidly for eight years solid! 😂 not at all. I’ve just done several bursts.
Re sushi. I usually get the mixed sashimi platter. If I’m feeling flush. You tend to get salmon, tuna, mackerel, prawn, sea bass, octopus, eel - or a combination of these. I also love the miso aubergine and seaweed salad, but be careful with those because they often come with sauces. You’re good with straight soy sauce and wasabi.

lukiebebe · 15/01/2024 18:14

Hi all!!

I'm so sorry I've been super rubbish lately at replying. Wedding planning is consuming every free second I have.

I hope all is well with you all today! How's it going?

So many more great food recipes I'm keen to try thanks everyone for continuing to share these! I made an aubergine parmigiana the other day to accompany my chicken that was yummy!

@BigBoysDontCry helllo! I totally agree with you about the choices for people needing to cut down on carbs! It's hard out there and like you said you end up ordering the same thing all the time!

Thanks to those who gave me a little pep talk lol you're so right these bumps in the road happen and I can't beat myself up about them just got to move forward!

My weight has stayed the same the last few days 12st 6, but I'm noticing a difference in my body which is fab. Felt comfortable to walk around in undies yesterday! Haha.

Tonight I'm off to my first resistance training class of the year (used to go last year before Xmas) and I'm wearing a sport bra and leggings (with a little workout jacket on top but open) and I feel great. Haven't been able to workout in a sports bra for ages. You can still see my rolls and bumps but no as much as before.

Thanks for the sushi suggestions @PossumintheHouse will look for somewhere to take us!

@lukiebebe well done how you feel is what it's all about. Wouldn't care what the scales said if you felt you looked good would you 👏🏻

All ok with me still. Resisted cake at work. Wasn't even too bothered really. Just been pottering sorting kids food and stuff. Had the old faithful tuna for lunch (I do really enjoy that) and made a stirfry for tomo. OH had the leftover cheeseburger casserole (thanks @Gobolina was yum). I'm not really hungry yet but thinking I may go with poached eggs a bit later with some creamy mushrooms and spinach.

It's so bloody cold!!!

MorningWalk · 15/01/2024 19:31

Also apologies for lack of reply's from me. Now I'm back at work i don't see the messages till late and forget to reply. Glad to see everyone's doing well. Had chicken and salad this evening for dinner. I am really low on my fat goal today though and worried this may be a negative thing. Since i have been on Keto since 1st jan i am fully in ketosis and what they call 'fat adapted' i need the fats for energy. I have been fasting more and more and getting to just eating dinner so not getting enough of my macros. But im just not that hungry now in the day especially when I'm busy. Hoping I'm doing it right as they also say don't eat if your not hungry x
