Hi, I’ve not tried Keto before so any advice welcome.

Anyone else just starting out, we could support each other.

I like a bulletproof coffee but I find even a coffee with just cream is all I need until about 12.30 pm.
For my bulletproof coffee I put in organic grass fed butter and cream or coconut oil and cream

Dulcedelecherocks · 29/06/2020 23:13

Tbh I am used to the 20g and find I can eat loads of veg as long as it's the green leafy stuff which tends to be just 1 or 2 g per 100g. Today for example I had chicken with mayo, olives, slices of cheese and cucumber for lunch. Dinner was spinach with egg and mushroom and some chicken in butter. Didn't have breakfast as I tend to fast. My total carbs for the day came up to just 5g.
Some days I will be much closer to 20 if I have yoghurt or cream or fancy different veg which are a bit more carby such as cauliflower or peppers.

justgoingforanap · 29/06/2020 23:55

I'm 5ft 2 so can I join in? Need to do some reading up on Keto but lost 10kg last autumn when I really reduced carbs after being told I was pre diabetic. I've put on 3kg in the last few months and really need to get back onto some kind of wagon. I'm currently 83kg.

JustMoved123 · 30/06/2020 03:07

Welcome @justgoingforanap, same weight as me!
I’m hungry this morning, I was a bit low on calories yesterday so I think that’s why. Really hoping I have another good week to keep this going long term.

Hey all,
Starting my day with coffee with soya milk. 1 carb per 100 mls. This will help me stay under 20g

KetoWinnie · 30/06/2020 07:04

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 09:16

Morning all.
Thanks for the tip KetoWinnie Will check him out.
Not hungry this morning so just having a very big coffee

Turkeydrumstick · 30/06/2020 09:28

I have just read this entire thread! Some great tips, especially the net carbs thing I was so confused as I must keep going on American sites! I started Keto on sunday after being on slimming world and already feel better. The food is so much tastier and enjoyable. The hardest bit is after tea when I normally raid the biscuit barrel but so far so good....

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 09:42

Turkeydrumstick Welcome!

justgoingforanap · 30/06/2020 10:22

JustMoved123 I am in my fifties as well so our stats are very similar! We must spur each other on, I know it works for me, it's just keeping it up and with a DD who loses weight easily and has been dangerously low weight in the past I have tempting snacks in the house. Must not open 'that' cupboard!

KetoWinnie I'll have a listen to Jason Fung. Thanks for the suggestion.

KetoPenguin · 30/06/2020 11:14

Hi everyone can I join? It's so funny everyone is 5'2, I am actually 5'0 myself so will stand on tiptoe. I have been doing keto for a month now and lost 9lb. Not the fastest but I am just happy I have managed to stick to something.

I have a difficult history with dieting as I must have failed to stick to every diet going, and the one time I did have a good success on Exante meal replacement I gained it all back. After that I struggled even more and started binge eating and find it really hard to deal with being hungry. My main goal is to stick to low carb even if I eat more and my calories are higher. I'm not really tracking properly as I have a real problem with tracking consistently. I just can't do it but I do it sometimes and that's given me an idea of what I can have.

I have quite a lot of weight to lose as I want to lose about 6st but I am really looking at making this a way of life so I guess it doesn't matter how long I take.

I'm enjoying watching various YouTube videos and that has been fun. I'm not against a bit of keto baking although I can see how that could get out of control and become expensive. I think if I am going to do this long term I am going to want the odd cake or pizza just to feel "normal".

JustMoved123 · 30/06/2020 11:22

@justgoingforanap we can definitely try and keep each other going, it’s harder to lose as you get older for sure! Sadly I don’t have my ‘children’ with me but positives are that I only need To concentrate on myself and DH who also needs to lose weight.
@KetoPenguin welcome, keto baking would be interesting.. we made naan bread at the weekend and whilst it wasn’t like bread it was good to have with the curry, made it feel more normal!

Can I join? I’m also 5ft 2 😂 and now weight 13 stone. I’ve lost a stone in six months but recently fell off the keto diet.

I read that you have to make sure you get adequate protein or you can loose your hair. Something about macros.

Also trying to read the obesity code as that’s been recommended to me

daisychicken · 30/06/2020 11:39

I'd certainly be interested in keto baking recipes for a long term plan. I am however, a bit iffy on sweeteners so any thoughts people can offer on that, would be appreciated!

I do make 90 second 'bread' and we've recently started making fathead pizza dough - a fantastic dough that doesn't mean i feel left-out when the family have pizza. In fact, they are happy to have 'my' pizza (though they do prefer "proper" bread base).

I'm similar to Dulcedelecherocks in that I fast so don't eat breakfast. This helps with keeping to 20g but, I'm not strict to 20g and find some days I'm under and others 1-2g over.

Ketopenguin I really recommend Carb Manager for tracking. It's easy enough to add in foods, cioy from a previous day if you have leftovers etc and many people have added various recipes or ingredients so you don't have to sit and fill in all the data.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 13:47

I make this Keto bread recipe , which is brilliant for making my meals feel more ‘normal’. Just toasted some to go with chicken soup for lunch and it didn’t feel like diet food, (especially as it was slathered with butter!!)

I also make little bakewell puddings with butter, eggs, ground almonds, almond extract/vanilla and a bit of erythritol sweetener (apparently erythritol is a good one as it doesn’t affect blood sugar like some sweeteners can do). I then pop a couple of raspberries - or a Chopped up square of 85% chocolate - into each one and snaffle with some clotted cream. Amazing!!

I’m wary of recreating my old habits too much - bread and cake are my weaknesses - so I don’t have them all the time, but being able to make something with a bit of substance occasionally helps me to feel less deprived Grin.

I also made sugar free lemon curd in my instant pot the other day. OMG!! Now some of that stirred into Greek yogurt makes it amazing.

For dinners I’m lucky that my DP has been buying me loads of steak from a restaurant supplier turned delivery service, so I’ve been spoiled with fillet and rib eye, with creamy sauces, over the past few weeks!!

JustMoved123 · 30/06/2020 14:20

That bread looks good @MarkRuffaloCrumble, I’ll give that a go.

I’m struggling tonight with the after dinner need to eat something sweet!

OP posts:
MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 14:30

Hopefully once things have stabilised that won’t be such an issue. I’ve found I really don’t feel hungry most days, and the sweet craving is definitely more out of habit than the physical ‘need’ it used to be! Have you got any dark chocolate? One square of that, straight from the fridge and left to melt on your tongue can be enough sometimes!

daisychicken · 30/06/2020 14:40

Bread does look good! Where do you get flax meal and erythritol from @MarkRufflaloCrumble?

Yes, I find the majority of the time I don't crave sweet stuff anymore. But sometimes - usually around my period, if my Fibromyalgia/CFS fatigue is really bad or I'm feeling really low, then I do crave something sweet.

Jelly Mousse with cream and/or berries does make it feel as if I've had a treat: sugar-free jelly made up with half the recommended amount of water then mixed with cream cheese and left to set. - I pour the mix into baby food containers to get a small portion.

pontiouspilates · 30/06/2020 14:47

Hope everyone is having a good day. I made the 90 second bread today. It was pretty good toasted, not sure I'd fancy it not toasted. It felt very 'normal' being able to have a toasted cheese sandwich for lunch. I'll definitely be making it again.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 15:36

Bread does look good! Where do you get flax meal and erythritol from

I ordered both from Amazon, but I’m sure you can get them from Holland & Barrett or somewhere too, if you’re not an amazon fan!

My erythritol is granulated like sugar, it’s by Olena foods. I’ve bought various types of flax meal, some is finer ground than others so may behave differently in baking, so I’d try to find one that’s a medium grind - not total powder, but not whole seeds either!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 15:42

Milled Linseed 1 Kg this one is very finely ground

Wholefood Earth Organic Ground... But this one is a bit rougher so good for the bread

Erythritol Natural Sweetener 1kg this is the sweetener I bought

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 15:43

Ah crap, links don’t work! Amazon put spaces in the links so they liked funny - I closed them up, but it still won’t work! Never mind, you can probably do a search for them pretty easily.

Turkeydrumstick · 30/06/2020 15:43

Has anyone tried cheesies? My order just arrived and I am in heaven and needed to share it with someone! The perfect crisp replacement! Anyone have any others?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 15:43

*looked

FFS when do we get that edit function?!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/06/2020 15:44

Yes Cheesies!! I’m not even a big cheese lover but when you want something crispy they’re ideal. Pork scratchings get a bit much sometimes!

I also buy the Atkins crisp breads, which are great for a crispy snack with some cheese on.
