Keto support thread!

Hi all,

I'm going to start Keto again tomorrow. Tried for the first time a few weeks ago but felt dreadful after a week so I fell off the wagon - combo of Keto flu and period I think.

Anyone else venturing into Keto and fancy some support?

@AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson ah shit. Hope it doesn't last too long. Make sure you're getting electrolytes, magnesium etc. I went a bit off plan with two slices of birthday cake but the pee sticks are saying I'm still in ketosis and I kept sub 50g of carbs so hoping I've not done too much damage.

Managed to lose another 1lb overnight so the calorie deficit seems to be working.

Going to try and make some halloumi wraps I saw on Facebook tonight. Half a block of halloumi and 2 eggs blitzed in a blender then fried. Shock

mooncuplanding · 08/07/2019 08:18

Keto flu sucks

Try and imagine what your body is doing. It’s been so used to having quick fire carbohydrate available at any moment, and now it’s like ‘woaaaaaah you want me to use FAT!!!”

Depending on your diet before, and how carb dependent you were, this process can be hell. But you won’t regret retraining your body. Life on the other side is worth it!

Also because your levels of glucose in the body are reducing you will lose more water, so do keep on top of your electrolytes as they go with the water weight too. Those soluble tablets don’t go anywhere near being enough...get some proper electrolyte tablets from amazon or make your own.

mooncuplanding · 08/07/2019 08:20

Also don’t worry about calories for now

The aim right now is to reduce insulin levels by drastically reducing carbs

Once you are through this you’ll see your appetite reduces anyway

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 08/07/2019 08:55

I've woken up day three and I don't feel too bad... not hungry at all Grin

Those wraps sound relish... might give them a go!

cheesenpickles · 08/07/2019 09:19

Yay! Glad you're feeling better @AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson I've been quite lucky with keto flu but I have a sneaking suspicion that my old metabolism is still inside of me and I'm not as insulin resistant as I think, just lazy and snacky! I'll definitely report back on the wraps. Feel a bit sacrilegious blending up halloumi but if it makes a half decent wrap for fajitas I'm game. Smile

I've got the dreaded PCOS and I'm on metformin so fingers crossed Keto works. I know in the past the only thing that's worked (and I mean the type of weight loss for an average person not the 1/2 every month that I get with my PCOS) was lighterlife or VLCD. But it's unsustainable for me. I NEED TO EAT Grin

mooncuplanding · 08/07/2019 11:15

I’ve heard many many good stories about PCOS and keto

Reddit has a whole forum on it. Might be worth checking it out

R/xxketo is the general keto for women thread that has loads of wimmin specific keto info

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 08/07/2019 12:16

Thanks Mooncup, I'll check that out.

Made some gorgeous fat balls last night - peanut butter cheesecake. Whizzed up some pecans with butter for the base then added mixed cream cheese and peanut butter with a sprinkling of cacoa powder on the top for taste. How is this a diet?!?

No thanks Robert

You don’t need supplements to get your body into a ketogenic state and there is no evidence your products do that anyway

SuzieQQQ · 16/07/2019 05:57

Hi OP! I’ve started keto too. Well I’ve been doing it for 3 months now and have lost 10kg. Is that a normal weight loss? I see other people losing much faster? I’m just going to keep going. I wan to lose another 17kg.

cheesenpickles · 16/07/2019 07:47

I've lost about 10.6kg in a month and a half but tbh I'm losing at quite a fast rate and I don't expect it to stay that quick. I want to lose another 27.6kg myself.

I think loss varies greatly due to our biological make-ups, hormones and activity levels. The key thing is to keep sticking to it. That's a brilliant loss so far and well on your way to losing the other 17kg.

Shiraznowplease · 16/07/2019 20:02

Hi can I join please, will start tomorrow after a failed attempt today. Have PCOS and been diagnose type 2 today so I NEED to do this.

supercee · 18/07/2019 15:34

Hello,

I lost a fair amount about 15 years ago (can't believe it's been that long) low carbing Atkins style. It's really been the only diet - and I've tried many - which I feel the best on and I see the results fairly quickly, if I stick to it.

I've decided to give Keto a bash and on day 2. I am aware of what foods are/aren't low carb and the calculator gives my daily calories as 1100 so can't go mental on the fat. Aiming to stick to 20gs for as long as possible and avoid anything higher than 5g per 100gs.

One thing that I keep thinking is - I usually avoid breakfast in the mornings except weekends and that suits me. I do however like having a Tassimo machine Costa Cappucino whilst I'm getting ready for work which is 2.6g carbs/45 calories per serving.

I know it's technically not a proper fast as I'm having the cappuccino but I don't have proper food until the 16 hour window is up. Will the cappuccino derail things/slow down the weightloss or will it be ok factoring in the 2.6g into my 20g daily allowance?

I don't have that much to lose (stone, stone and a half) but I don't want to feel completely deprived and I really enjoy having one in the morning. Black coffee doesn't cut it! Hard enough saying goodbye to my beloved pizza for now...

supercee · 19/07/2019 09:35

Bump for anyone still on the Keto wagon!

Day 3 and can feel the de-bloat in force already!

BishopBrennansArse · 19/07/2019 13:34

I've found the best recipe for rolls - I was really stuck for quick lunch ideas that didn't involve firing up the cooker so they're brilliant. Made with almond flour, psyllium husk powder, egg whites, baking powder and vinegar.

Hi all, I'm just browsing this topic looking for some advice about keto. I lost 3 stone doing the BSD last year and I've kept it off now for a year (I weight exactly to the pound what I did this time last year) so maintaining well. However, I am still about 5-7lbs above my original desired target weight and so before we go on holiday I fancied doing a very strict week 'blast' of very low carb to see if I can shift those last few vanity pounds.

BSD is low carb but not keto, so currently I'm having about 80-90g carbs a day but not potato/rice/bread etc. I do have some sugar at weekends but actually I feel a million times better when I don't. I just have a few queries/questions....

I don't eat dairy (only 5 weeks in, but I feel so much better without it)- is this a problem?

I run a lot, maybe 5 times a week and do 40+ km a week, with at least one of those being a long 90 minutes +. Is this possible in keto? Should I tone down the regime for the first week?

Do I need to calorie count? How many carb grams should I aim for?

castlecutie · 19/07/2019 18:57

oh i'm glad i found this! i'm in my second try at Keto and struggling a bit. have a cheat day planned for tomorrow as i feel it's the only thing that'll keep me focused. otherwise i'll just binge. i've got some urine strips coming too so am hoping that once i KNOW i'm in ketosis, it'll help keep me going. gotta say though, i'm getting real sick of bacon and eggs Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/07/2019 18:58

Oh, and can I have unsweetened soy milk in coffees?

WeeCharlotte · 24/07/2019 00:51

Hello, hope it's not too late or rude to join after this thread has been going so long.
I did keto about ten years ago (using All About W8, which is basically keto) and lost 4 stones. Was delighted, but my eating habits hadn't changed, and that, coupled with being in a rotten relationship, meant I put it all back on and then some.
I've been on keto for three and a half weeks and have lost a stone and a half. To be fair, the last 7lbs were because this week my anxiety peaked, I ran out of antidepressants and couldn't sleep or eat. Thankfully, I'm feeling better now, but I know the last half stone wasn't lost in a healthy way.
I'm wondering - does anybody else have issues with fathead dough? It completely knocks me out of ketosis. One tiny slice of fathead pizza, even with 'safe' toppings, staying within carb limits, will totally finish me.
I'm going on a mini-holiday in two weeks, and I'd like to hit the 2 stones mark by then.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/07/2019 07:09

Just a little update- I've done 3 days with sub 20g carbs now and this morning have weighed in 6.5lbs down since Sunday. I'm amazed! If nothing else I thought that because I ate fairly low carb anyway I wouldn't get the initial weightloss, and Also because I don't know if I'm actually in ketosis yet (i don't have any signs of keto flu, I hope my Ketostix will be delivered today)

dancingmom · 25/07/2019 21:10

Can I join? Would be grateful for any advice! Start tomorrow! What are these macros I need to track?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/07/2019 05:45

Dancing this thread is very quiet I have realised so you might be better to join either the low carb bootcamp thread or one of the other keto threads that gets more traffic.

Or you could join our BSD thread, it's not exactly a ketosis diet but it gets very good results. It's still low carb/high fat but not as low carb as keto.

But to answer your question: macros are 'macro nutrients' so it just means the amounts of carbohydrates, protein and fat you eat. The diet aims to get an optimal balance between them. Do you have a calorie tracking app? I've been using one called Keto diet (it is a paid for one, I've paid £2.99 for a month to see if I like it) but it tracks the nutrients, I can enter my foods in and it gives the macros as a percentage of my total cals plus grams of each that I've eaten.
