'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

morgan, ham is fine now and again but it is still processed so try not too make it a staple part of your daily diet. Naice ham better than the cheapo plasticky stuff of course Grin

Am going to eat sardines as penance for the Crunchie incident.

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 12/01/2014 19:19

I just had one of those moment, when eating my delicious buttery roast chicken (skin in particular), with the cheesiest cauliflower cheese the world has ever seen, and veg drenched in butter, where you think "really? Am I really allowed to eat this? Is someone having me on?"

Can't believe I've been conned by low fat low flavour diet food for so long. 6 stone on in 8 years of dieting. Let this be the year when I finally stop dieting, start eating, and start living!

Morgan · 12/01/2014 19:20

Naice ham bien sur .

teaandthorazine · 12/01/2014 19:21

Actually, scratch that - have just checked contents of what I thought was a rather sad and sparse fridge and found Savoy cabbage, bacon, cream and mushrooms - wahey!

Dinner will now be shredded, steamed cabbage mixed with bacon, mushrooms, garlic and a good glug of double cream - oh low carbing, how I have missed you!

SteeleyeStan · 12/01/2014 19:26

My you lot have been chatty. Grin I'm not fully caught up...

I must have lost a bit of swelling/fluid this week. My engagement ring keeps falling off, which is unheard of. (Wedding ring hasn't fitted in ages). :) DH weighed and measured his circumference today, and I'm glad he's joining me in this! Shock I think the combo of LCHF food at home and carby snacks and sandwiches at work have done their tricks on him! He used to be one of those people who could eat anything and never put on weight... but the mid-30s have well and truly hit him!

All ready and rearing to go tomorrow, and great news about the whole new forum, too!

Today I've had:
B: An avocado and a large coffee with cream and coconut oil.
L: A spinach omelette.
D: Homemade curry, which was yummy. I fried chicken thighs in coconut oil with shallots, garlic and dried spices; then added green peppers, broccoli, courgette and double cream and let it simmer. We just ate it as it was from soup bowls.

CalamityKate · 12/01/2014 19:48

I deserve to lose a full stone this week!

DS made brownies with butterscotch/toffee sauce for pudding. Served with cream. It looked bloody divine. I didn't touch a crumb of it :(

FourArms · 12/01/2014 19:48

Good couple of days I think....?

Sat

B- pork scratchings (too processed)
L- belly pork (two strips) salad with NLY
D- steak, prawn and chicken with salad (Harvester dinner)

Sun

B- 3 x scrambled eggs
L- roast lamb, cauli, sprouts and carrots (too high carb?)
D- mushrooms fried with butter & garlic with cream and cabbage sautéed in butter with leftover cream from mushrooms

Have tried having my coffee with cream, but don't enjoy it. Will stick to just 2/3 cups per day instead.

Whoknowswhocares · 12/01/2014 19:50

I've just tried celeriac mash for the very first time. I can't believe how much nicer it is than potato!
I'd FAR rather use it from now on....whether I'm dieting or not!

PseudoBadger · 12/01/2014 19:54

Whoknows - I did it tonight, just a small portion for me and must have screwed it up as it was horrid! How did you do it?

BerylStreep · 12/01/2014 20:02

Badger I do mine by boiling the peeled and cubed celeriac for about 20 minutes (until soft).

Drain, then add a glug of cream, a generous knob of butter, some black pepper, and some nutmeg.

Whizz with a handheld blender.

Celeriac fondant is also fab. I'm pretty sure Crabby may have a recipe on her blog, but I am also pretty sure that I attribute all gorgeous recipes to her, so it might not be there Grin

Whoknowswhocares · 12/01/2014 20:03

Oh absolutely nothing technical! Boiled until soft just like spuds, then drained well and mashed with black pepper and a big wodge of butter.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 12/01/2014 20:07

Beautiful spreadsheet. Have added this morning's weight as won't have scales tomorrow.

Have actual 'flu rather than carb 'flu (... possibly just a cold...) so am feeling too morose to care about anything but water and breathing heavily through my mouth. Which means I don't care about the No More Wine, so silver lining an' all that Grin.

MrsHughJarse · 12/01/2014 20:15

How exciting - I have put my weight from this morning on - as Mondays are a freeforall of teenagers and toddlers and trying to get to work ! I am very happy though - I have lost 4 lbs this week and have made loads and loads of school girl errors ! Onwards and downwards - good luck everyone and thanks for all the support !

LauraBridges · 12/01/2014 20:29

So these are my foods which don't help my weight and obviously some from tomorrow are out of these:

nuts and raisins
cheese
cream
sweet potato

So from tomorrow no nuts and raisins and no sweet potato and try to go easy on the cheese and cream. If I get a nuts and raisin urge I could eat the cheese (if I have to - my body doesn't like it, makes my throat feel funny, nose run, face hot etc) or drink the cream instead after a meal. Do we think that will work? (I eat and drink no non whole foods or processed foods)

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 20:29

Beryl bless you, I love how you're attributing all these wondrous recipes to me - you must have good associations with my blog! Grin I've done celeriac mash (ya got to roast it in olive oil/butter and herbs, imho, then mash it with butter and creme fraiche), but I haven't done the fondant.

Off to nurse my horrible cold whilst watching Sherlock now!!!

MrsJoeHart · 12/01/2014 20:38

After my tricky Saturday night, Iw sighed myself this morning to find another 4lb loss - since Friday! That's 6lbs I total in a week. I feel a bit sad my start Weight on the spreadsheet and new MN thing (yay) won't show this.

ChesterDrawers · 12/01/2014 20:59

Lovely food today.

B: poached eggs, bacon, mushroom
L: celeriac tartiflette, green salad with olive oil
D: chicken curry, cauliflower rice

Just having a decaf with cream to finish the night

Really looking forward to weighing tomorrow. I've been LCing since Jan 1 now and have found it so easy, not hungry, no cravings and only one totally planned deviation (red wine last night).

In short, I love it - just hope I do actually lose weight now!

blizy · 12/01/2014 21:09

Today I've had
B- babybel (wasn't hungry)
L- broccolli and bacon soup
D- cauliflower cheese, cabbage and leeks with some ham.

2l of water, 1 coffee with cream, 1 green tea.

Looking forward to my slow cooked beef curry tomorrow!

fizzly · 12/01/2014 21:42

Looking forward to the next fortnight. Have done really well over the last week I think, so here goes!

Today:
B: scrambled eggs and bacon
L: Roast chicken, with cauli cheese and roasted courgettes/asparagus/few carrots. Followed by homemade frozen FFL yoghurt with a little vanilla powder.
D: That salmon and feta and cheddar and eggs/cream thing that someone posted a few days ago. With lettuce. Was lovely.

Good luck everyone! Keep away from that big stick!

LucyVFood · 12/01/2014 22:15

Just ate a load of fat and crackling off the pork joint I've roasted for the week. Please tell me that's okay? I don't want to regret its salty, fatty goodness Sad

HumphreyCobbler · 12/01/2014 22:27

Lucy, that is absolutely fine Smile

ABAmummy · 12/01/2014 22:33
