'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Gerry - I'm not really sure about flax because it's something I've not really used. I know people make bread with it, but it does seem to impede weight loss for some as well.

keepon - this is what I do with savoy cabbage:

Slice or chop it, as you wish, and boil for a few minutes till it's softened. Drain.

In the same pan, melt a large knob of butter (at least an ounce/25g) and sauté some sliced/chopped shallots and a couple of diced rashers of smoked bacon. Season with lots of black pepper. When the bacon has browned a little and the shallots are soft, tip the cabbage back into the pan, stir it round to coat in the butter and mix into the shallots/bacon, then put the lid on, turn the heat down and braise for around 10-15 minutes.

Sometimes I also add a squeeze of lemon juice.

Yes, it would be nice if maybe we could 'opt in' to having our weights/losses visible to the group, so those who wanted to have privacy could do so. I like the thought of being named and shamed! Blush

LittleMiss - how long has the cast been on for? Has it caused a big gain? Don't despair, you are doing something about it, and that is the main thing.

I can see the link to the new section, sitting tantalisingly empty for now. :)

heliumheart · 12/01/2014 16:16

Cross post - that sounds perfect BIWI.

Meant to answer you too LittleMiss - I pick them up tomorrow morning. Can't wait :)

heliumheart · 12/01/2014 16:22

Re. flax, I think most of the carbohydrate is actually indigestible fibre, so the 'real' carb level is much lower. I have used it before to make things like flax crackers, with parmesan. The problem for me with trying to make low carb versions of high carb things like bread, crackers, cakes etc. is that I tend to overeat them in the same way I would if they were normal carb items, so end up gorging on them and the weight loss stalls.

Mlig · 12/01/2014 16:25

I've still not been able to find out where I was up to, so I know I've missed a few pages and im sorry..

But can anyone tell me how to make cream cheeses garlic mushrooms please? I know I've seen it on here but don't know where to look xx
TIA X

LittleMissDisorganized · 12/01/2014 16:25

That's lovely helium, I hope the time without them starts to bring some benefits to you as well.

I have had two lots of orthopaedic surgery in less than 5 months - the first had 8 week in plaster/aircast and this recent one 6 weeks in plaster and another 4 in aircast. I had a major injury in 2012 and these were both reconstructive. I put a stone on with the first and despite my best efforts half a stone with the second. That was over Christmas though Smile .

Sorry to witter, that was the shortest answer. Just about to try my first post op bath - looking forward to a nice long soak and hope I can get out again afterwards!

LauraBridges · 12/01/2014 16:26

That sounds the best of all worlds - the Willie spreadsheet plus the new pilot section of the site and we are lucky have either.
(Just ate last nuts and raisins before tomorrow)

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 12/01/2014 16:26

Im in the private list for a while! I just had an aromatherapy bath, thought I would weigh myself to see how much I had gained... got the shock of my life! Blush Then cried, then got cross at myself and have vowed that this is IT!

Game on Low Carb!

MrsHughJarse · 12/01/2014 16:46

Congrats biwi - I think you should write a book / tv series .... Start a company ! It's absolutely fab . I say this now before the shouting and stick waving starts next week !Wink

fizzly · 12/01/2014 16:48

Congrats on new section BIWI. You truly are MN royalty! I like to think this is a reflection of this WOE becoming a lot more mainstream.

I'm trying hard to get my DCs to reduce the carbs and eat the lower carb veg to get them more set up for life. They're only weeny but already so fussy (2 and 4) but fortunately are used to only getting commercial sugary things / juices very occasionally (usually from the grandparents), they have their porridge unsweetened and we use peanut butter with no sugar/salt for e.g. But the only veggies they will eat are still the usual sweet faves: peas, sweetcorn, carrots, red peppers occasionally. If anyone has any tips for getting the kids to eat more 'interesting' veg I would be really grateful. They won't even eat broccoli or cauli cheese. I did manage to get some cauli in their mash today and have been known to give them purple (red cabbage) and green (broccoli) mash successfully as well but always mixed with pots. Also they LOVE tomato soup. If anyone knows of a pre-made variety which is really low sugar I'd love to hear about it. I really don't have time to make my own - although I do make more or less all other meals from scratch.

googoogoggles · 12/01/2014 16:48

Oh Jax – never mind, tomorrow is a brand new day and you should have a big loss in the first week to cheer you up.
Beryl sorry you're having a pants day. I struggle with emotional eating at times too. Can you give yourself a different sort of treat?
Good luck everyone tomorrow.
Excited about this new thread but think I'll still do WIllie's spreadsheet of fabness, too!

BIWI · 12/01/2014 16:55

OK - Here's the link to the new Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

As there seem to have been so many versions of the list flying around it's possible that your name isn't on it. If that's the case, just add your name to the bottom, and Willie will re-alphabetise the whole thing.

If you don't want to join the spreadsheet that's fine - I'll be posting a link to the Weight Tracker tomorrow. It goes live at midnight, apparently! (Not that I shall be staying up to check Grin)

Lovely! Thanks so much BIWI and Willie
Looking forward to getting down to BC proper and start shifting some llbs again. Have sts for ages but have maintained over Christmas so have to be pretty pleased with that!
See you all tomorrow!

teaandthorazine · 12/01/2014 17:01

Oh fuck, I've just eaten a Crunchie Angry

I was clearing out the cupboards in preparation for tomorrow and there it was, looking at me. Bloody thing. It wasn't even that nice.

Still, at least it's gone now [hopeful]

New section sounds interesting.

Currently eating a bowl of whipped double cream with vanilla extract, cocoa powder and frozen raspberries stirred in. I'm telling myself that I'm enjoying it as much as the tub of Ben & Jerrys Fish Food that's calling me from the freezer, but I'm not completely convinced...

sybilfaulty · 12/01/2014 18:16

Huge congratulations to you, BIWI , for the new section. You have revolutionised the life of so many people, including me. You are a legend and I love you for it. Thank you.

Can't wait to get stuck in. Once you are in the LC mindset it is amazing. We went out for lunch today and I had a great big roast. Kids ate the parsnip, carrot, Yorkshires and potatoes. I had their cabbage and kale though. And half a bottle of wine. Oops. Still, we had friends down so it was a last hurrah.

Tomorrow is the start if something fab. I am really excited. I hope those new to LC are feeling the same. It will change your life and your body. Prepare to be amazed.

BIWI, for you Flowers.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 18:16

Helium and Chester that's brilliant - let me know how it turns out!

Thank you Beryl but I don't think I have one for braised cabbage (I'm not a massive fan of cabbage; I prefer sprouts!). I've got a recipe for buttered leeks up there though.

fizzly my DD (11) is also a vegetable-phobic Hmm so I sympathise there. The only veg she really likes are peas and sweetcorn, which are still very low in carbs compared to things like potatoes, pasta etc. I try to keep her diet as low GI as possible, as opposed to strictly low carb. She eats loads and loads of beans, so a typical meal will be butter/cannellini/black beans with peas and some leftover meat/chorizo/prawns etc. Butter and cannellini beans are fairly bland, maybe you could introduce those in a creamy sauce or even as a mash? I give her farro quite a lot too, which is an ancient variety of wheat. It's carby, obviously, but is a whole grain with a mild, nutty flavour, lots of nutrients and a low GI. I give it to her instead of rice, again with peas/sweetcorn and a bit of meat/shrimp and a splash of tamari/soy sauce. I use plenty of fats too - olive oil and butter makes everything taste better! My advice is to start with what they like and see what you can surreptitiously insert/change. Wink

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 18:19

Also I sometimes give DD just veg - so a lamb chop or something with a huge heap of peas and sweetcorn (and some spinach hiding in there). Dump the veg in the pan that you've fried the chop in so it's all coated in the lovely meaty fat/ put a big knob of butter on the top. That's a pretty low carb meal and they won't notice or mind the lack of carbs.

fizzly · 12/01/2014 18:25

Thanks for tip re beans - hadn't thought of that and will try. I very rarely give them potatoes or other 'carbs' with a meal - i.e. only veggies. Wish I could get them to eat prawns!

Suzymoo9 · 12/01/2014 18:30

Just saying good evening and good luck to everyone. I have never done anything like this online before and am getting quite excited! I peeped at the squeaky clean spreadsheet.
Thankyou.Wink

CrabbyWinterBottom · 12/01/2014 18:31

This is probably really bad timing but I have to share the recipe for the chocolate tart I made last night! Shock It would be a great treat/dinner party dessert when you're want to stick as low carb as possible.

I did the almond pastry proportions from the Rose Elliot recipe. Blitz the ground almonds and butter in the food processor, then push it into the base of a fluted flan tin, and up the sides. As in the recipe, prick with a fork and bake at around 180degrees for about 20 mins until brown. Allow to cool.

Blitz 200g of 70/85% cocoa dark chocolate in the food processor with some vanilla if you've got some. If you've got vanilla essence, add it into the liquid. Heat 250ml double cream in a pan until just simmering, then add 25g butter and whisk. pour the cream onto the grated chocolate and whisk like buggery until all the chocolate is melted. Add a dash of port/brandy/whatever you fancy, whisk it some more, and pour the mixture into the pastry case. Chill in the fridge until you can't wait any longer to eat it! Damn it was good!

I've got that on the menu for the day after the end of bootcamp! Grin

Beetsarebisgusting · 12/01/2014 18:36

braised cabbage recipe

Morgan · 12/01/2014 18:57

I have signed up for my first boot camp and have a couple of Q's . . I assume ham etc is not good ?? I want to make a salad for tomorrow to take to lunch and wanted to know if I can use the ham and some cheese.
Also after ideas for breakfasts to take to work - thinking egg might stink a bit in the office . Going to take some yoghurt tomorrow but what else is good ??
Is fromage frais useful or not ?
Thanks a million - looking forward to starting .

ziggiestardust · 12/01/2014 18:57

Beryl I'm sorry your DH is being an arse Sad do you want to talk about it? Massive sympathy your way, the people we love can really hurt us sometimes Sad Thanks

littlemiss enjoy your soak! And don't get downhearted. Now you're up and about, I bet you'll see some amazing weight losses! We'll all be green with envy next Monday Grin

BIWI looking forward hugely to this new section. You make such a difference to people's lives, you know Thanks

I've been quite good today;

B: ff natural yoghurt with some cinnamon stirred in.
S: cheese
L: roast beef, with mashed celeriac in garlic butter and double cream, and kale. Beef juices over the top in place of gravy (beef was cooked in own fat only).
S: hogbites pork scratchings

Substituted all my tea today for Apple tea, which I know is ok because it's only 0.3g of carbs per 100g. And I looked at the ingredients
Also had sparkling water, and am now having a glass of slimline tonic with a wedge of lemon. I know that's not allowed from tomorrow though.

I've put my weight in on the spreadsheet of fabulousness. Jesus, I should be fucking ashamed of myself. I'm just a slab of fatty wibble. Sad
