'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

helium - the first two weeks are no alcohol. When we move onto Bootcamp Light you are allowed to include it, although obviously in moderation. It's up to you what 'moderation' means Grin but you'll soon find out that if you have too much, then you won't see any movement on the scales. Generally speaking, it's probably best to reserve it for the weekend.

The difficulty with alcohol is that first, your body will use it as fuel before it burns anything else, so while it's burning that off it won't be burning fat. Second, it suddenly becomes very easy to justify eating things you shouldn't after a couple of glasses of wine!

But - like everything else about this - it has to be a WOE. It would be totally unrealistic to say you will never drink again or you will never eat something carby again. Life happens and we have to fit around it.

Great news Humph! I think your clothes fitting or being able to buy smaller sizes is actually more exciting and motivating than seeing the numbers on the scales - it makes it more real, IYKWIM

ziggie Have you read Bootcamp rules?! That bacon salt that you linked to will be full of artificial ingredients. It says that it's kosher - i.e. there's no bacon associated with it in any way, and that it's vegetarian - i.e. there's no bacon associated with it in any way. Therefore it will be an artificial flavouring that's been used.

It's one of the key things about Bootcamp - we're avoiding artificial and processed foods as much as we can, so that we're eating 'clean'.

woolfey when we move on to Bootcamp Light you can skip a meal if you're not hungry. But make sure that this doesn't end up with you being ravenous a couple of hours later, with nothing low carb to turn to! Once you're ketogenically-adapted, i.e. your body has switched from burning carbs to burning fat, which should happen after the first couple of weeks, you will find that you can do this more easily as you simply won't be hungry.

At this point, you might also want to explore intermittent fasting if it's something that you're interested in. Dr Briffa talks about this - it's not like the 5:2, but it's about going for around 16 hours after dinner one night until you eat the next day - which essentially means missing breakfast.

Thanks BIWI. When I was last low-carbing I used to use intermittent fasting if I had an indulgent lunch (ahem, a bit like yesterday) and then just drink shedloads of water and skip dinner (unless I really was hungry).

It's pathetic to think that I'm already worrying about being able to abstain from wine for two weeks. I've already managed to kick the 'have a glass when the kids have gone to bed' habit, because last year was so mental for me with the separation and one glass would turn into two, three, the whole bottle. So now it's just whilst socialising. I am really going to try though!!! I first low-carbed about 15 years ago, and had no problem at all continuing to drink wine, it didn't impede my loss at all. HOWEVER I was in my 20s. Things are very different now - I know from bitter experience that drinking alcohol, just as you say, not only stops the scales moving for me, but also causes me to eat badly. Carbs are the only answer with my bad hangovers!

I have some very exciting news! MNHQ have created a new section especially for Bootcamp, that will be launched tomorrow, to coincide with the start of this Bootcamp. We will have a shiny new weight tracking tool for you all to use, and all the info/resources that the lovely WillieWaggleDagger has curated over the last couple of years will be there as well

I'm just coming on to say woohoo!

I just weighed myself, I started LCing last Monday (6th) and this morning when I stood on the scales I was 6 lbs lighter! I can't believe it given the amount of butter, cream etc that I have been consuming!

I have a problem tonight, we have friends coming over and everyone wants to go out for dinner, to an Italian! I don't want my change in diet to affect everyone else so I'm hoping that they will have steak or something that I can have instead of my usual spaghetti carbonara. I checked and the restaurant doesn't have a website so I can't look on the menu before hand. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what an Italian restaurant might have that will be LC friendly?!

I've lost 7lb in a week which I'm over the moon about, but I'm not hungry now much. I've not had dinner twice as just not hungry and yesterday I only really had one meal - pizza express chicken salad, no dough sticks, plus goats cheese and dressing. Am I eating too few calories? Will I be ok?

Wow BIWI, that's fab!

I'm not putting up today's eating yet as the day has only just begun but I just wanted to say that I've lost 7lb so far- doing this for 7 days. Yippee!

I also had my first real challenge yesterday- in macdonalds as a last resort to feed the children. I had chicken and bacon salad, no dressing as nothing suitable on offer. I did feel a bit deprived but equally, I'm feeling really proud of myself now!

(Next time I'm going to take a sneaky pot of Mayo in with me)

It's not about the calories, it's about keeping your blood sugar levels stable. You really should be eating more than that, even if it's just a chunk of cheese or a few olives.

Sarah I have a little pot bought specifically for the purpose of sneaking homemade vinaigrette into McDonalds. Blush Well the kids do love it so sometimes it's an easy option.

BIWI you're so right about using clothes as motivation. I finally wear more of my pre pregnancy clothes, so it feels like a size ten isn't a pie in the sky dream anymore - it could be a reality by March!

Sayra it tends to be the primi piatti that are the carby wonderousness naughtiness in Italian restaurants. The secondi piatti, or mains, tend to be meat or fish with vegetables. They should be happy to replace the potatoes or whatever with extra veg, just stay away from the pizza, pasta and risotto.
