'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

From what I've seen so far, it's pulling together not only a weight-tracking tool but also all the information I wrote about low carbing, which TBH is often lost, as well as our weekly chat threads, recipes, questions, etc.

BIWI · 12/01/2014 11:26

The plan will be that when you enter your weight, you only see your weight and you can track your own performance. You won't be able to see anyone else's weight, which means people needn't be worried about 'confessing', IYSWIM!

Thanks crabby I just always have pasta at an Italian so couldn't think what else I could have. I know ive had garlic mushrooms as a starter there before so I'll have that then fish or something for main.

LauraBridges · 12/01/2014 11:50

That will be really helpful as I sometimes find it hard to find the bootcamp rules and other aspects of it. It is very popular and it works and it's healthy real foods so there isn't really a better way to eat for life. I am not surprised it is popular.

It will be interesting if psychologically not seeing how you are doing compared to others is a good or a bad thing, whether a "public shaming" and requirement to keep up or lose, the big stick disappears and is missed in a sense and it becomes something where you can con yourself as there is no accountability or whether it will be good that no one can see.

Brilliant news about the dedicated area Biwi, I've also found it hard to locate all the relevant resources as they get drowned in the threads or are scattered across threads. Still can't get over my 8.6lb loss this morning!

BIWI · 12/01/2014 12:28

That's brilliant, Nux!

Re the dedicated area, I think it should make things much easier - and hopefully I won't have to keep posting the rules/linking to the rules! And Willie won't have to do all the work keeping up the spreadsheet.

I think this first one is, inevitably, going to be something of a pilot, and we can use it to learn what needs to be honed/find out what's missing, etc.

BIWI that's brilliant news about the new section. I feel we should be paying you weekly like people do at WW or Slimming World.
Would you accept virtual payment and my eternal thanks instead?

Thanks to MNHQ and everyone else involved too. Have a last Wine on me Grin

BIWI · 12/01/2014 12:40

Money you say?

Ham n phili sounds like a lovely breakfast thanks. YY to yogurt just not a big fan n thinking that's got 3.8g in a serving where a handful of almonds I'm guessing has less. Ham sounds lovely though. Grin

DurhamDurham · 12/01/2014 12:43

What's that virtual currency called ( that is used and has an actual value, which I can't get my head around)? Bitcoin?

You can have millions of Bitcoins!!

BIWI · 12/01/2014 12:45

Oooh - actually, Bitcoins are worth a lot of money, apparently ...

OP posts:
BIWI · 12/01/2014 12:46

"Virtual currency Bitcoin has attracted increasing media attention over the past year. It's also soaring in value, with a single bitcoin surpassing $1,000 (£613) for the first time in November. So has the media hype driven the price hike?"

So, if you want to pay me millions of bitcoins, you owe me a gazillion!

OP posts:
DurhamDurham · 12/01/2014 12:49

No problem BIWI, I will transfer the Bitcoins just as soon as you message me all your bank account details Grin, all of the the details or it simply won't work Grin

Cbeebijeebies · 12/01/2014 12:49

Just ate 3 of DSs giant buttons and feel really sick. I've only been strict this last week in prep but won't be doing that again. Serves me right!

ChesterDrawers · 12/01/2014 13:23

Thanks for the curry idea Crabby, will give the Kashmiri sauce a go.

heliumheart · 12/01/2014 13:46

Chester and Crabby - I'm cooking the Kashmiri curry as we speak. Doing well today, and feeling good.

Lunch - steak with avocado/cucumber/gem salad. Delicious.

LittleMissDisorganized · 12/01/2014 15:34

StuntNun thank you for the mint sauce suggestion, you've saved my tea tonight - I will cook with a bit as a marinade and DH can then add all the extra he likes.

BIWI well done you, thank you so much for your time and commitment.
The "Pepsi" article was interesting, as were some of the comments. I have been addicted to diet coke since my mid-teens. As an addict, moderating IS a waste of time. I'll do my best, which is all I can do.

helium I'm so glad somebody "gets me" wrt air cast added to weight. I hope the children being away has been ok. When do they get home?

So, I weighed myself, with the aircast on. Gulp. The price, to me, of the surgery. Paying the cost of it continues with losing the weight again. And sat down, took the air cast off and put it on the scales (accurate to the nearest 1/4lb). It weighs.............. nothing.

Sigh.

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 12/01/2014 15:41

The special mn section sounds brilliant! And yes thank you BIWI, I can't believe after all the ww/sw/gym money I've spent trying to be thin in the last 10 years, I'm now getting all this for free!

Quick question to any experts out there. I keep seeing recipes with milled flax in them, just had a peek at the nutritional value and they're 35g carb per 100g? Am I missing something? Because there are some delicious sounding recipes that I really want to try. Is it something to do with fibre content?

Thanks!

Crabby had a gorgeous braised cabbage recipe on her blog.

DH is being an arsehole to me today Sad.

I feel hollow inside, and have to confess to a bit of emotional eating.

Kefybaby · 12/01/2014 16:06

Great news on the dedicated section, BIWI and MNHQ! Thanks
I also hope that being able to see our own progress only does not work in a less motivating way than feeling the social pressure.
I feel I have had too much too eat in the last couple of days. Large meals, rather than snacking and still following the rules but it feels wrong. The scales will tell tomorrow morning.
I look forward to the official start!

Lovecat · 12/01/2014 16:09

That's fantastic news! I still haven't replaced the battery in the scales Blush, must go and do that before tomorrow morning.

Feeling quite excited now! :o

BIWI · 12/01/2014 16:11

The lovely Willie is doing a spreadsheet anyway, because I'm not quite sure the new section is totally ready, and I'm not quite sure how it's all going to work yet! So looks like you can have a choice of 'private confessional' or 'public humiliation' Grin
