This is the clearest explanation I've seen for limiting sugar. From a nutrionist called Amelia Freer, copied from today's Times:

"If the amount of glucose in the bloodstream is above the body’s comfort zone of about 1½tsp-2 tsp at any one time — one regular can of Coke has 9 tsp — then the hormone insulin gets produced to chauffeur the excess glucose out of the blood and store it as fat. Elevated levels of insulin circulating in our bodies can be detrimental to our long-term health. Our cells can become less responsive to the presence of insulin, meaning our bodies keep needing to produce more and more insulin to get the same reaction. Eventually the cells stop responding at all. This is type 2 diabetes."

Bumbumbee - hot water with a squeeze of lemon and a bit of fresh ginger is nice - makes you feel nice too & can keep topping it up with hot water

StuntNun Sun 05-Jan-14 15:22:04

In the summer I was drinking water with a slice of cucumber / orange / lime / strawberry or a combination of some of the above.

BIWI Sun 05-Jan-14 15:39:21

Afternoon all! Sorry not to have replied to the many queries but I've been at my dad's having Christmas with my family Ooop North. And with very, very limited internet access.

On the train back home now so I will reply later when I can guarantee a good signal

whodunnit Sun 05-Jan-14 15:43:07

The princess project (search on MN) recomends starting every day with a glass of lemon water. If that helps.

maddy68 Sun 05-Jan-14 16:00:59

Green tea is nice. No milk but doesn't taste like you're missing out!

kasbah72 Sun 05-Jan-14 16:59:11

Thanks FourArms. I have most definitely been overindulging and drinking way way way too much as well. I have some leftovers and open wine and chocolates so we are going to celebrate the end of the holidays today and then start cutting back from tomorrow.
Thank you!

PseudoBadger Sun 05-Jan-14 17:35:30

I'll be drinking jasmine tea which I love.

googoogoggles Sun 05-Jan-14 18:22:54

Love jasmine tea, too psuedobadger – occasionally treat myself to tiny balls of pure jasmine leaf...

Am debating whether to start tomorrow BC proper tomorrow as well but may wait as like the support on the thread. Still not eating pasta, bread or potatoes though have had lots of wine and chocolate over Christmas. Also eating loads of nuts and berries. Think I've maintained since the last bootcamp, so pleased with that. Would dearly love to shift another 7-10 llbs this BC (trying to be realistic).
My main problem is not drinking enough water so really going to try and work on that this time round...

Thanks BIWI for new thread!

LauraBridges Sun 05-Jan-14 18:47:49

(Athelstane, I have never seen so many anti sugar articles as in the press in the last week. I'm really pleased. Even articles about diabetes never mind obesity. The message seems to be getting though. The Sunday Times Style also has one today Part 1 how to give up sugar)

Maryz Sun 05-Jan-14 19:25:09

I should start tomorrow shouldn't I?

alternatively I could go mad and finish the chocolate

Maryz Sun 05-Jan-14 19:27:50

And I need to find an alternative to coffee that I actually like. Something warm and comforting. No caffeine, no milk, no sugar.

and don't mention a slice of lemon in a cup of hot water, just don't

<ponders>

BIWI Sun 05-Jan-14 19:46:15

Tomorrow I'm starting a 'soft' start to Bootcamp Maryz, if you want to join us on that thread?!

Maryz Sun 05-Jan-14 19:50:50

Oh, yes, that would be good.

A sort of slowly, slowly, you can do this thread would be great.

I am afraid to weight myself, that's my real problem, as I suspect I put on most if not all I lost. But I do know I can lose it again, and lose it painlessly, but for me carbs have to be all or none. I can't have "a sweet" or "a potato", my brain doesn't do "moderation" when it comes to food.

Nux Sun 05-Jan-14 19:57:02

Hello, I'm a bit nervous but I think I'd like to join boot camp please? I did low carb with great success in 2012 and looked like me again for the first time in years but have been sliding back into bad habits and at Christmas gave up completely, stuffed myself with crisps, choc and booze and have gained 9lbs since 20th Dec, I shit you not! Not even sure how it's possible to gain so much weight so quickly :-(

I've never done weight-loss with a support network before but this time I think it will really help me. How do I add myself to the list?

Nux Sun 05-Jan-14 19:58:05

Oh and just saw you're doing something that starts tomorrow, good! Will come across to that thread too, if that's ok.

WhomessweetWhomes Sun 05-Jan-14 20:02:28

Maryz, have you tried chai? Not the sugary milky version they sell in Costa etc, but the proper spiced tea. I drink it without milk and find it very warm and comforting, especially in cold weather.

Maryz Sun 05-Jan-14 20:04:33

I don't drink tea at all, Whomes, I really dislike tea (the smell makes me gag, it's a leftover from my grandparents' house where I was pretty much forced to drink it). I'm not too keen on any of the herbal teas either - and I suspect the sweeter ones aren't a great idea.

blizy Sun 05-Jan-14 20:37:31

Can someone please link the soft start to bootcamp thread for me please? I can't seem to find it.

BIWI Sun 05-Jan-14 20:58:20

I haven't started it yet, blizy grin

Ruprekt Sun 05-Jan-14 21:05:21

pudding25 Sun 05-Jan-14 21:19:03

I think I hae added myself on at the end of the list!

I started low carbing in abour September and automatically felt a million times beter and lost a few pounds. Have fallen off the bandwagon drastically and feel like crap. I am starting tomorrow. Had a ton of carbs and sugar today and feel awful. I am within a healthy range for my height but would like to lose about half a stone and keep it off.
