Week 7 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - final fortnight

Morning all.

Finally we're having some summertime! It seems like it's much easier to stay low carbing when the weather is nice, for some reason.

Tonight we're going to have fritatta (without the potatoes, obvs) as I'm using up veg in the fridge before I go shopping tomorrow. So it will be shallots, peppers, leek, courgette (all gently softened in plenty of butter) and a load of cheese. Will serve it with a green salad, with an oily dressing, as I have a lettuce that needs to be used. For lunch, I'm finishing up stuff we had at our barbecue on Saturday night - a beefburger, some marinated chicken and coleslaw.

Here's the spreadsheet some really good results so far, and still scope for losing a couple more pounds before we finish this Bootcamp. I'm hoping that when I next weigh (this time around my 'official' weigh-in is Thursday) that the scales might actually start with a 9. I'm so close to that it's tantalising!

However, although next week is our final week, I'm not going to be around for a lot of it, as DH and I are off to Vienna for a few days - my Christmas present! - so I really want to achieve this next target before we leave early next week.

Honestly, these threads so vital to managing the process and I thought I knew about weight loss but am happy to be corrected on that!

To be fair, there are myriad ways to achieve weight loss - but each one has its own 'rules' and processes. It's why it's important to follow Bootcamp rules if you're doing Bootcamp. If you're doing keto, for example, things would be different.

Oooh I thought bootcamp was keto? Not that it matters. I try to follow BIWI’s rules regardless whether they’re keto or not but just assumed it was!

BIWI · 25/06/2024 12:10

Keto, technically, is a very low carb diet. Generally I believe it's supposed to be 20g carbs or less per day. Sometimes it's 50g.

Whereas on Bootcamp we're just more generally low carbing - we don't count carbs, and therefore it will be more likely that the carbs are not as low as keto.

Ahhh, I see! Could not be bothered counting carbs or calories! I did Fast 800 during first lockdown. Never managed 800 Tbf but did loose a LOT of weight. It was fine during lockdown as had soooo much free time to plan, add up cals, prep & cook. It was beyond ridiculously time consuming! And all I thought about. This woe is such a doddle. As long as I stick to it.

BIWI · 25/06/2024 13:15

It's the reason why I created it @NotDonna - so tired of so many years of counting calories! It leads, IMVHO, to an unhealthy obsession with food, which really doesn't help.

I think I've already got that! 😂I question the carbs in EVERYTHING!! My colleague has just been to the shop and bought all our service users and staff ice lollies/ice creams. He sat down with a Magnum Euphoria Pink Lemonade! First words out my mouth were 'How many carbs in that?' 😂😂It's all I ever ask these days when it comes to food. I didn't have anything by the way!

MissBeck · 25/06/2024 21:16

OMG, where is everyone?? Have you all melted?? 😂
It's been bloomin hot today, and had to resort to putting my desk fan on a couple of times, but instead of putting a T-shirt on with my jeans, I'd put a cami top on with a really lighweight blouse over it and 3 people said they could tell I'd lost weight! That's a nice feeling isn't it, when other people notice.🤗

B: Coffee with Double cream
L: Prawn Cocktail Salad
D: Minced meat with buttered brocolli and cauliflower.

I've been craving digestives all day today!! 😮🤐

lastchancesalmon · 25/06/2024 23:42

Checking in a bit late cos I was too scared to step on the scales yesterday! Quite a lot of slippage last week, crazy busy week work wise, I just wasn't feeling it and travelling back from Wembley at 1am I succumbed to a McDonalds cheeseburger and then that begat a bowl of crisps with wine on Sunday... anyway by todays weigh I've only put on a pound and I think I'm back on track so I can hopefully shift it.
B - creamy coffee
L - leftover BBQ meat with leaves, Caesar dressing and hm coleslaw
D - leftover BBQ meat with leaves, Caesar dressing and an avocado. Lots of variety there...
Bit of a half arsed attempt at the water today, topping up with a herbal tea at bedtime.
It's just 10 day until the wedding (I'm a guest not getting married). I bought some shoes today but still undecided about what to wear, and just realised that if I take my hair straighteners away with me DD2 might lose the plot, so not sure how my hair is going to look either...

BIWI · 26/06/2024 09:13

Hmm. Surely they're your straighteners?!

Sorry for disappearance @MissBeck - we were probably all suffering watching the football?

I'm not watching the football Grin Wendy ball as dh calls it Wink

I did watch the Warriors become URC Champions in South Africa so therefore the underdogs on Saturday though. Smile

TheOnlyMrsW · 26/06/2024 10:13

I wasn't watching football either but Green Day in Glasgow, less than 24 hours in the city with famously carby DD and a complete disaster! On the train home and guzzling water like my life depends on it, feel very sluggish and tired too.

BIWI · 26/06/2024 10:24

I was taking one for the team trying Aldi's NoSecco last night, a pink 0% alcohol prosecco, and very much enjoyed it. I was surprised, as every other 0% alcohol wine I've tried has been awful. It's very pleasant, and slipped down very easily. Only after I'd finished the whole bottle did I think to check the carbs Blush

First thing, it's actually labelled as 'sweet' - which I hadn't realised. TBH, it didn't taste that sweet. And second, it's 4.7g carbs per 100ml, making the whole bottle 30g carbs.

Thankfully the rest of my day had been pretty low in carbs, but that's a mistake I won't be making again!

Good Lord! I'd rather poke my eyes out with a shitty stick! 😂😂

@TheOnlyMrsW - Green Day were performing a mile from where I live Smile

I could hear the concert Wink

It was such an achievement! My DD is in the same class as one of the coaches' kids so it was nice to hear about how excited they all were! His wife said it was such short notice, the team couldn't all fly together and ended up squished into whatever seats they could get.

They were fab!!! Many bucket list ticks this summer 😍🤘

prettybird · 26/06/2024 11:19

@UnOeufIsEnough - apparently they had to prioritise those who got business/first class and those that got economy class Shock I suspect that George Horne and Jamie Dobie as scrum halfs would've been shunted into Economy Wink

I did out of interest look at ticket prices a couple of days after the semi not that we could've travelled because of dh's op : going out for 5 days (flying out Thursday, returning Tuesday), there were flights available for only £600 Smile But literally minutes later, they'd jumped £200! Shock

EasterlyDirection · 26/06/2024 11:52

Just checking back in. I did lose 1lb last week but have fallen off the wagon a bit, firstly over the weekend with a lack of water and a sandwich (think I mentioned that on the previous thread) then at the pub last night eating crisps and drinking lime and soda because I couldn't face any more plain soda. DH always buys crisps at the pub and opens the packs flat for everyone to share (we were in a group of about 8 with our DCs and friends) and crisps are the hardest thing (apart from bread) for me to resist. So weight is back up again now. Back to it though.

Drinking when out is really hard, we go to the pub quite a lot (a couple of times a week usually), I don't drink much alcohol but find soft options so limited carb-wise, I used to drink diet coke but no longer really enjoy it and sweeteners/caffeine are not good. Sometimes have a 0 alcohol beer but they are often pretty carby (I know @biwi posted about them a few weeks ago). If I am drinking I'll have a dry white wine spritzer or small glass of red, but more often than not I don't want to drink at all as I am often driving.

Gingerwarthog · 26/06/2024 16:20

Despite my concerns - not too bad - 143.6 from 143.8 so only a 200g loss but not a gain.
Would like to get to goal of 143 and then maintain, so only 0.6 lbs to go.

BIWI · 26/06/2024 16:47

Nearly there @Gingerwarthog! Flowers

Afternoon!

Ooh, @Gingerwarthog You're so close!!

I've been thinking of a fry up all day so I'n having bacon, sausage, fried eggs and mushrooms for dinner. Might have fried tomatoes as well as I have 8 left on the vine in the fridge, but never tried frying fresh tomatoes so I am invisaging a red mushy mess! 😂

See it’s that 4.7 that could fool me whilst conveniently ignoring the denominator. Is there a carb per day number that we’re trying to not go over?

DrBlackbird · 26/06/2024 17:09

Oops… question already asked and answered! Blush

BIWI · 26/06/2024 17:18

Unfortunately it's impossible to give you a specific number @DrBlackbird, because everyone tolerates carbs differently.

Dr Briffa, author of (amongst others) Escape the Diet Trap, would say 150g carbs per day, or no more than 30g carbs per meal. I believe the average, non-low-carber will be eating around 250-300g carbs per day, so you can see that 150g would be considerably less. (NHS guidelines suggest 250g per day).

I think that 150g per day is probably more like maintenance rather than an amount for weight loss, but unfortunately the only way to truly know is to experiment and see what happens when you increase your daily carbs.

This, in fact, is the basis of the Atkins diet - you start off in induction with a very low number of carbs per day - only 20g, and then work up through the different phases gradually increasing your carbs until you reach a point where you start to gain weight, so you can reduce again till you find the amount that works for you.

It's difficult to do this, because you have to be absolutely focused and weigh/count everything accurately - alright, not difficult, just tedious! (It's also the reason why so few people actually do Atkins properly)

Personally, if I'm looking at a recipe which is carb-counted, I'll generally avoid anything that's over 20g carbs.
