Week 7 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - final fortnight

Morning all.

Finally we're having some summertime! It seems like it's much easier to stay low carbing when the weather is nice, for some reason.

Tonight we're going to have fritatta (without the potatoes, obvs) as I'm using up veg in the fridge before I go shopping tomorrow. So it will be shallots, peppers, leek, courgette (all gently softened in plenty of butter) and a load of cheese. Will serve it with a green salad, with an oily dressing, as I have a lettuce that needs to be used. For lunch, I'm finishing up stuff we had at our barbecue on Saturday night - a beefburger, some marinated chicken and coleslaw.

Here's the spreadsheet some really good results so far, and still scope for losing a couple more pounds before we finish this Bootcamp. I'm hoping that when I next weigh (this time around my 'official' weigh-in is Thursday) that the scales might actually start with a 9. I'm so close to that it's tantalising!

However, although next week is our final week, I'm not going to be around for a lot of it, as DH and I are off to Vienna for a few days - my Christmas present! - so I really want to achieve this next target before we leave early next week.

Okay thanks @BIWI for that info, it’s all interesting and keto seems v low. Whereas a big appeal of boot camp was the not calorie counting and the not being hungry plus butter and avocados being on the good list. I’m hoping to make this a WOE as I’m eating more healthier than I’ve done so in years.

MissBeck · 26/06/2024 20:02

I'm sat here thinking what am I going to do when bootcamp ends. I'm debating whether to carry on, or switch back to my whole foods diet that I was doing from January until March before I discovered bootcamp. I lost exactly one stone doing that, and it's not that far different from low carb really, just you can have anything that is still in it's original form (or near enough), including fruits and potatoes, in moderation.

I might do alternative couple of months. Couple on LCHF, and then a couple on whole foods.

Has anyone else thought that far ahead yet?

Gingerwarthog · 26/06/2024 21:35

@MissBeck
Yes - I think I will keep on a low-carb light diet after this season finishes (with the odd banana and yoghurt raisin treat thrown in Easter Grin) and a few glasses more of wine at the weekend.
If I don't, my weight will just increase quickly and plateau at 10stone 10lbs.

Lougle · 26/06/2024 22:25

I'm possibly a bit rigid in my thinking but I can't think why I would change what I'm doing. If I do, everything I've worked for over the last few weeks will reverse.

NotDonna · 27/06/2024 00:12

I’m thinking the same as Lougle and sticking to low carb. I’m 1.6lb away from this bootcamp goal (150lbs) but I’d like to lose another 5lb. My aim is make the bootcamp goal then maintain over my holidays - there’s a lot of visits, catching up, parties etc so if I maintain I’ll be very happy. Then in September start working on the last 5lb by going strict.

TheOnlyMrsW · 27/06/2024 08:04

I'm similar to @NotDonna and @Lougle - outside of bootcamp I still follow LC and find that I still lose the odd lb here and there and maintaining a steady weight is easy without much thought. The next few weeks are v busy, 3 festivals, a week visiting family in Scotland and then the dreaded results day mid-August so I'll be a little less strict with alcohol but other than that will stick with LCHF. Think I've mentioned before but since starting this woe last summer I don't really miss the carbs anyway (apart from bread!) so don't really see much point in reintroducing them. I'm about 5lb from where I want to be weight wise but will just koko and see how things pan out...........

NotDonna · 27/06/2024 09:10

I’m away to Oz on Sat for a few weeks so will find it hard to weigh but intend to stay on plan.

BIWI · 27/06/2024 10:45

I'm very, very jealous @NotDonna! I'd love to be going back to Australia.

At least the food scene there (especially in the major cities) is really good, and you should be able to keep low-ish carb. As for the wine, however ... Wink

We're hoping to be going to Australia in March next year (assuming dh's recovery goes well Smile although he's feeling very sorry for himself at the moment ) so that's helping give me a long term motivation. Halo

MissBeckIsAtWork · 27/06/2024 13:05

It's great to see so many of us going to carry on with this WOE. Once started it seems very hard to think of doing anything else! Like I said the other day, I'm obsessed with carb content in everything these days. 😂

UnOeufIsEnough · 27/06/2024 15:55

I'll definitely be continuing with low carb. It makes me feel so much better and, apart from the odd craving, I don't miss carbs too much (maybe apart from baguettes and croissants 😳).

Hopefully I'll manage a pound or two off before the next bootcamp! 🤞

EasterlyDirection · 27/06/2024 16:29

I'm the other way round and find it very to hard to stick to the WOE without the encouragement of the thread, unfortunately. So bread, chips and crisps tend to slip back in but I have never really gone back to rice and pasta and eat far less sweet stuff than I used to, I also drink very little alcohol now so it's not all bad news.

MissBeck · 27/06/2024 16:44

@EasterlyDirection I've actually loved this thread to chat on to be honest. In real life I avoid human beings like the plague. I don't do sociallising at all. 👀But it's been nice to come on and chat, rant, confess, console and be in the same boat as many others. I'm happy to continue with a thread if others are. 🤗

Gingerwarthog · 27/06/2024 16:52

Has anyone found this WOE has positively impacted on their dental health?
Just been to dentist and instead of the go to the hygienist- do not pass go - chat he said everything is great. Is there a link???

FinallyHere · 27/06/2024 16:54

Glad to hear from so many lovely people planning to continue bootcamping. I'm been bootcamping since 10 Jan 22. I find it easy to eat out and in company, routinely substitute leafy greens for the usual padding and skip pudding.

I've never been much of a drinker but was an absolute sugar addict, completely ruled by getting my fix. Chocolate and plenty of it used to be the first thing I packed going away, just in case.

It's very good to know that there will be company to continue here.

STS (within 500g which could just be 500ml water ) since October 23 though I am encouraged to see on the scales in the gym at work that my still rather high 33% body fat is slowly melting and % muscles slooowly creeping up.

Enjoy the odd couple of squares of 90% Lindt or hardcore 100% Montezuma. If I find my mind dwelling a bit on chocolate it's usually because I'm a bit bored by what I'm supposed to be doing.

Anyone else find so.very.many reasons to eat which are nothing to do with hunger ?

EasterlyDirection · 27/06/2024 16:56

When I first did low carb I noticed my teeth feeling much cleaner @Gingerwarthog it makes sense as plaque comes from sugar.

I am EXTREMELY sociable @MissBeck and it is one of my downfalls with eating as I never say no to an opportunity to go out and that impinges on time available for meal planning, cooking etc.

FinallyHere · 27/06/2024 17:01

@Gingerwarthog definitely noticed the dental hygiene impact of low carb. Ever since adulthood I've been very careful with dental hygiene and often felt cast down by dental hygienists advice feeling I was not getting any credit at all.

Started with a waterpik at the same time that I started bootcamping. Maybe overdid the water flossing a bit at first but now settled down.

About a year in to bootcamping (and water flossing) my dentist started to say I could visit the dental hygienist every year rather than every six months and that I should 'keep on doing whatever I was doing'.

All good, such adulting

That’s interesting @MissBeck as ppl are defo missing out. You come across as having a lovely nature and most of your posts make me smile if not giggle!

@BIWI & @prettybird DH is aussie so we go a fair bit. His dad died in Jan so it’s his memorial service so this is a bittersweet trip! We’re in Broome (28/29’c) 10 days and Melbourne/Adelaide (6-12’c) 10 days too so packing is rather challenging!

Gingerwarthog · 27/06/2024 17:28

I had you down as a party animal @MissBeck

I had you down as a party animal @MissBeck

Absolutely 😁

prettybird · 27/06/2024 17:44

@NotDonna - that will indeed be a bittersweet trip. Even going to SA 6 weeks after dad died was bittersweet as there was so much about the trip that we'd have liked to share with him afterwards to get his perspective (ie what was it that we weren't seeing about the changes/lack of changes there Sad)

Our very draft itinerary for next March is to go for 4 weeks, landing in Perth, visiting the wine areas of Margaret River, flying over to Cairns so that we can visit the Great Barrier Reef while it still exists (my bit of the trip) and then flying down to Melbourne to visit my family (aunt and cousins) and go to the wedding (being held in Feathertop Winery so right up dh's street Wink), visiting some more wine areas and then flying back to Perth. (When I looked at prices initially, that was the cheapest way of getting there, even allowing for the internal flights).

Not booking anything yet as we need to see how dh's recovery goes he's not coping well at the moment but hopefully that will pass but I'm keeping an eye on prices via Jack's Flight Club.

MissBeck · 27/06/2024 17:48

@prettybird That looks like a busy itinerary! Hopefully DH will be back on his feet by then.

NotDonna · 27/06/2024 18:02

@prettybird DH & DD2 & DD3 are in Margaret River as I type! They left last week, but bc DD1 working and although obtaining 3 weeks off we are flying out to Perth a week later. We’ve not visited WA before & Papa was meant to join us. The other three are loving Margaret River, their wineries, gin distilleries and chocolate factories! We visit Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide mostly as that’s where family are but we always try to visit another area for a ‘holiday’ otherwise we are in an Airbnb constantly hosting, which is lovely but exhausting! Queensland is my fave, by FAR! Love Great Barrier Reef, Daintree, Cape Trib and all up that coast. Do you scuba dive? If so try to do a live aboard for a few days to reach the outer reefs. You’ll have an absolute blast!! We are doing the non-stop flight from Heathrow to Perth so just 17hrs! Super quick. Well, comparatively speaking.

NotDonna · 27/06/2024 18:03

Sorry to go off on a tangent from bootcamp!
