Week 3 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - Light or full-on?!

BIWI · 27/05/2024 08:43

Morning all.

This week sees the opportunity to add back into your diet fruit, nuts and seeds, chocolate and alcohol, by moving to Bootcamp Light.

HOWEVER!

All of the above in moderation.

Fruit - keep the focus on berries, and don't go mad by having lots of it, regularly. As with veg, there's a carb counter on the spreadsheet which you can use - just look at how few fruits are in the green section!

Nuts/seeds - there's a carb counter for nuts on the spreadsheet too (and when I get round to it, I'll do one for seeds. Again, go easy. While they're very good for us, they can get carby very quickly as they're so moreish.

Chocolate - aim for a minimum of 70% cocoa. You'll be surprised - if you've been avoiding sweet things for a while - at how easy it is to enjoy higher cocoa content chocolate. It's also actually good for us too. Lindt make a good 90% chocolate, but I prefer one that Sainsbury's sell, in their Taste the Difference range, which is a Ugandan one - https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-ugandan-90-dark-chocolate-taste-the-difference-100g

2 squares of this is very satisfying.

Alcohol - be very careful here. Partly because you'll find it has more of an effect on you if you're not eating carbs, and partly because once you start drinking you'll suddenly find yourself easily able to justify those crisps! But mainly because a) there can be a lot of carbs in it; b) all the time you're drinking alcohol, this is the source of fuel that your body will be using, rather than fat and c) even if you choose a spirit which has no carbs in it, chances are you'll be drinking it with an artificially sweetened mixer - and remember we're trying to avoid the artificial sweeteners.

The Benefits of Having a Healthy Relationship with Chocolate

Are you and chocolate on the outs? It may be time to make amends. Find out how having a balanced relationship with chocolate may be good for your overall health.

@NigellaAwesome handhold for all you are dealing with 💐 whatever can 'DH' be thinking of, to seem so thoughtless?

@prettybird Your self restraint is inspirational. I so know what you mean about not being able to have a single piece. I tell myself that the first taste is easiest to refuse, seriously feels as if sugar is like crack cocaine to me.

@Pleaseandthankyou I've kept a pair of white Levi shorts from 1990 as my 'reference' garment, from before the days now when everything I own has some stretch. If I could be bothered to tan my legs I'd wear them out these days.

TheOnlyMrsW · 01/06/2024 08:00

@NigellaAwesome hugs and Flowers rant away

Gingerwarthog · 01/06/2024 08:17

Hugs to @NigellaAwesome xx

Magnolia82 · 01/06/2024 09:46

Morning all.

Sorry to hear things are so hard @NigellaAwesome

I just wanted to check in to say hello and that I'm still here. I'm aware I'm often quite quiet on these threads (mixture of busy-ness of life and also often not feeling I have anything helpful to say!).

But I read everyone's posts (sometimes a bit behind) and find them so helpful. Thank you! I'm not really managing to lose any weight yet (which is frustrating), but I don't have much to lose, so just keeping on as I know low carb is the WOE that feels best for my body. Hoping some pounds might drop soon!

Pleaseandthankyou · 01/06/2024 10:11

@NigellaAwesome you are having such a tough time. Can you sit your husband down and spell out what you need him to do.

@FinallyHere getting into shorts that old is a feat.

@prettybird did you post a photo of you in that dress a few years ago. I remember seeing you in something special.

PunksVersusBrats · 01/06/2024 12:22

Virtual hugs to everyone having a tough time at the moment, for a variety of reasons 💐

This morning I am musing on this WOE and exercise, mostly because I was expecting moderate DOMS from a challenging walk up a local mountain yesterday. It's a route that I've not done for several years and I don't walk that sort of elevation regularly so, from experience, I was expecting at least a little discomfort today but no, nothing. It might be a coincidence, or my muscles were more efficient, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

I'm trying this for lunch today, not made it before.

SpellitwithaY · 01/06/2024 12:31

@nigellaawesome so sorry you're having a difficult time. You're doing really well and a few glasses of fizz sound like what you needed

@prettybird - how are your burns now?

Still sticking to it to the letter as every day is bringing more down on the scales so that's motivation for now!

B - bacon mushroom and cheese omelette
L - what's in the fridge salad
D - not sure. Was thinking of soup with mince if some sort.... Any ideas?

OpalTiger · 01/06/2024 14:21

@NigellaAwesome so sorry to hear of your situation. Please vent all you need here, and we’ll support in any ways we can!

Lovely weather here today and we’re going to have friends over for a BBQ tonight. I’ll have chicken and salad and I’ve went and bought non-alcoholic gin as I have no desire to repeat last weeks accidental drunkenness. Only problem is dessert - I’m thinking maybe a keto brownie? It has almond flour which should be ok but also some sweetener which is obviously not ideal… I suppose I could refrain altogether but that seems so antisocial?!

BIWI · 01/06/2024 14:50

You could always do something simple, like a platter of fresh strawberries and raspberries, with some whipped cream? You could flavour the cream with vanilla bean paste, to give it a touch of sweetness. And then follow it with a cheese board!

Thank you biwi and everyone who posted recipe inspiration. I’m going to have to dip out of this but hope to be in good health to do a future one. Going through cancer treatment atm and I had lofty goals of getting fit while kicking cancers arse, but I just need a lucozade and an easy pasta meal at this point! I will be lurking the threads for recipes as there’s lots I’ve discovered during this that are now going to be a staple.

lastchancesalmon · 01/06/2024 15:52

@Rhabarberbarbara wishing you successful treatment and good recovery - I think listen to your body/do what you can do atm.

More experimentation with the BBQ today and just had low and slow BBQ pork with hm coleslaw and salad leaves, bit of sour cream. Yummy!

OpalTiger · 01/06/2024 15:54

Thanks @BIWI thats a great idea! I’ll get merengue for the others, fresh berries and cream - perfect dessert for a BBQ!

Lougle · 01/06/2024 16:29

I hope you don't mind me rejoining you? I started Bootcamp in May 2022. My starting weight then was about the same as it is now. So I'm glad that I haven't gone higher than then, but annoyed with myself that I've allowed the weight to creep back on. I don't have much to lose (1.5 stone total would be ideal, but 1 stone would be fine). I started low carb again last week, so I've added myself to the spreadsheet and back dated the data to then.

Food in our house is tricky because I am gluten free, DD3 is vegetarian, and all 3 girls have SEN so have various sensory difficulties with different foods.

BIWI · 01/06/2024 16:30

I'm so sorry to hear that @Rhabarberbarbara - hope it all goes well, and we're here whenever you want to come back Flowers

@Rhabarberbarbara I'm sorry you're having to go through cancer treatment. Eat what you need to, so that you feel as well as you can.

SpellitwithaY · 01/06/2024 18:16

Hey so I've resisted quite a bit of temptation today with both girls wanting noodles for lunch.... (My absolute favourite). And they're tucking in to chicken nuggets as I type (I'd normally minesweep the leftovers). I've told DH to "deal" with any leftovers and I've made soup!

I went for this recipe (more or less)

www.wholesomeyum.com/recipes/5-ingredient-roasted-tomato-soup-low-carb-gluten-free/

I didn't have onions and I had different quantities of everything so I estimated. It's punchy with chilli flakes! Might have a salad with it...

😁

UnOeufIsEnough · 01/06/2024 20:19

Woke up this morning with a stinker of a hangover 🤕 I stuck to Prosecco all night and there were lots of low carb canapés, which was lovely but I was suffering this morning.

After a couple of paracetamol, I managed a decent low carb brunch of scrambled eggs, bacon, avocado and mushrooms, which sorted me right out. I couldn't face cooking dinner so we ordered a chicken kebab from the takeaway and swapped the pitta for a SRSLY wrap and added lots of mayo to the salad.

Not the best day, obviously, but managed to avoid the cravings for a big plate of chips! Blush

BIWI · 01/06/2024 21:11

Lovely dinner this evening - on my own as DH and DS1 are out at a gig. Rump steak, celeriac chips and green salad with shallot vinaigrette.

Diet, what diet?!

Evening all

@NigellaAwesome You need to borrow BIWI's stick and give him a whack round the earhole with it! But good news about your sister.

@Gingerwarthog Wagon's still rolling, just jump back on!

@Rhabarberbarbara Wishing you all the best. You just do what's right for you.

@Lougle I know exactly where your coming from re: SEN diets. My 15 year is a nightmare! 'Too thick' 'Too thin' 'Too Cruncy' Smells weird' 'Too lumpy' 'It's touching my other food!' 'It's on the wrong plate' 'You're using MY fork!!' - Good grief, I feel your pain! 😜

@SpellitwithaY Great will power!

Well, I didn't do the rhubarb tray bake for my birthday today, in fact I haven't done anything with it at all yet. It's still on the side! Went to B & M this morning and spent my birthday collection money from work on various garden tools ready to tackle the jungle Monday! This is the first year EVER I haven't had a birthday cake!! 😪I did have a square of dark chocolate though instead. 😂
B: Coffee with Double Cream & ham
L: Scratchings
D: 2 egg omlette with ham, mushrooms and cheese.

Gingerwarthog · 01/06/2024 21:16

Thank you @MissBeck
I jumped back on - Schloer sparkling fruit juice and a sausage salad this evening.

MissBeck · 01/06/2024 21:19

😂😂Is it Christmas?? We only ever have Schloer at Christmas. 😂

Gingerwarthog · 01/06/2024 21:31

@MissBeck
It's been a bit of a debauched few days!!!

NigellaAwesome · 01/06/2024 22:10

@Rhabarberbarbara I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this. The one thing I can say, having seen my sister's journey, is that IME cancer teams in the NHS are outstanding. It may be on its knees in other areas, but the staff we have dealt with have been amazing and it seems well resourced.

Everyone, thanks for the kind thoughts about my rant. DH has said sorry, but tbh the word slips off his tongue so easily and it will be something else next week. He has good qualities, but thinking of others isn't one of them. Grrr

Food today:
B: Coffee with cream x2
L: Chicken salad with iceberg, avocado, tomato, pepper & walnut pesto
D: ZH pork and apricot salad
Sn: currently having berries and cream

Lougle · 01/06/2024 22:12

@MissBeck happy birthday!

Yes, the sensory issues are tricky. We have one who doesn't like mushroom and one who adores mushroom. One who is vegetarian but dislikes the texture/taste of many vegetables. One who struggles with anything that needs chewing. One that has braces, so can't have anything too crunchy. One that doesn't like textures that are too soft.... The list goes on.

I had half a steak (4oz) and a whole sliced courgette, fried in oil. I enjoyed it.
