July 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - the final weigh-in

By now I'm sure you've all entered your final weight on the spreadsheet

So sorry for the very, very late posting of this thread!

I'm off on holiday, leaving very early tomorrow morning, so not much time to catch up on everyone's progress. But needless to say, I hope that you have enjoyed this Bootcamp, and that you've made good progress towards whatever goals you have set for yourself.

I will have my laptop with me and, wifi willing, will try and catch up with the thread/everyone while I'm away.

@Whicker there's no way around it, you just have to make a decision that all the benefits of the low-carb way of eating outweigh the momentary pleasure of carbfest. It really is a battle of the mind because your brain remembers that short term fix that carby food gives you, but you need to remember the feelings that you have when you're back on the wagon.

WeAreLateAgain · 21/09/2022 20:23

@Whicker it is hard, because weight loss requires commitment and a plan that fits your life. Depravation seems to work against you. You also must consider that it is not really the carb, but the combination of carbs and fats. You didn't grab the sugar sachets near the kettle at work or a boiled potato, both pure carbs.

Again and again, between bootcamps , you fall off the wagon, maybe you are on the wrong train. Try something else. You didn't resist the cake or the chips because you are on a plan that is too restrictive.
Temptations are everywhere, even at the pharmacy, with chocolate bars at the till. How do you resist the sweets in the office kitchen, the fried food at the restaurant and so on?

This constant failing and battle with your willpower and the guilt when you fail, proves low carb is not how you will succeed .

Try something else. Put your health at the centre. Instead of depraving, think rewarding. Instead of counting carbs, count fibre and give yourself a goal, eat the rainbow everyday. When your body is nourished, your brain isn't screaming for crap.

Low carb isn't like that though. There isn't any carb counting to do, other than learning which foods are below 5% carbs and which above. The rules are so simple.

@Whicker I don't think that giving in to crisps or cake is a sign that a diet doesn't work for you. It's just a sign that you made a bad choice this time. KOKO

Whicker · 22/09/2022 06:46

Thanks everyone. Reheated bolognese sauce for breakfast and a renewed determination for when o get into the office.

Lougle · 22/09/2022 06:54

Well done @Whicker ! I hope you find today easier.

ditavonteesed · 22/09/2022 07:56

What's with all the negative posts last couple of days, we are here to support each other and any long term way of eating involves falling of the wagon occasionally as well as adjusting to different things. Nobody is forced to do this, we do it because it works for us, people who have not had luck with weight loss, people who have insulin resistance due to medical problems, people like me who have been overweight their entire adult lives and are enjoying feeling good.
We are here to support each other through the good and help each other get back on track through the bad. If you are not doing this woe, looking for support or looking to give support then this really isn't the place for you. I'm not being confrontational just don't understand why people are here offering advice that wasn't asked for.
@Whicker hope you have a better day.

Pleaseandthankyou · 22/09/2022 08:16

Well said @ditavonteesed . Bootcamp works. It it easier and gives you more choice than low calorie. You do need to plan. If you come home to an empty fridge that’s when the toaster goes on. I am trying to bootcamp during the week but introducing carbs at the weekend. I know I won’t lose weight doing this but I am trying to maintain. If I just go back to eating what I want I get bigger. My weakness is sourdough. I have realised that I cannot just eat what I want without putting on weight so I need to restrict something. I am happy at this weight but I also have health benefits. Lower blood pressure being the main one. Another few pounds would give me more wriggle room but I am finding them very difficult to shift. I think I am at a set point weight.
Have a great holiday @biwi. Where are you? It looks fabulous.

BIWI · 22/09/2022 09:19

@WeAreLateAgain I assume you are the same poster as @TabascoAddict (and presumably also MatchaTea from other, previous threads)?

What kind of person are you who comes on to a low carb topic and thread to then tell people that what they're doing is wrong? What kind of pleasure do you get out of that?

I don't go over to the calorie counting or Slimming World or Weight Watchers threads and tell them that I think what they're doing is wrong. People on those topics/those threads have made their own choices and it would be hugely arrogant of me - not to say unhelpful - to castigate them for the diet they have chosen to follow.

As @ditavonteesed has so eloquently written, these threads are support threads. We look to help people if/when they're struggling them, not castigate them for doing things 'wrong'.

And this statement:

Again and again, between bootcamps , you fall off the wagon, maybe you are on the wrong train. Try something else. You didn't resist the cake or the chips because you are on a plan that is too restrictive

... is both hugely assumptive as well as incorrect. If you have bothered to read any of the threads over this 8 week Bootcamp, you will realise that this WOE is anything but restrictive.

This too:

Instead of counting carbs, count fibre and give yourself a goal, eat the rainbow everyday. When your body is nourished, your brain isn't screaming for crap

... also illustrates that you know fuck all about how Bootcamp works.

  • we don't count carbs
  • one of the rules of Bootcamp is to include plenty of veg/salad in our meals - so lots of rainbow-eating there, along with fibre - and also good nutrition - it's something we emphasise very strongly.
  • our brains scream for crap because sugary, carby foods feed the dopamine centre of our brains, and because we've been conditioned - especially as women - that sweet things will make us feel better. Our brains don't 'scream for crap' because we aren't nourished

So bore off. Go and tell all the calorie counters that calorie counting doesn't work. Or something.

And if you're going to have a go at Bootcamp, make sure you know what you're talking about first.

Apologies @Whicker - I came onto the thread to respond to you and got a bit sidetracked!

Getting back on the wagon can be hard - but the only way is to just do it! For me, whenever I find myself wavering, I remind myself of the other benefits of low carbing - not just the weight loss. Have a read of some of the resources on the spreadsheet, or online - the Diet Doctor website is usually a good place to start. There are also some good pieces on the Fast800 site (although it's not really low carbing as we do on Bootcamp).

And just keep posting! There's usually always someone around who will help to talk you down!

DH has decided to try low-carb for 8 weeks, and started on Monday. I found this recipe for cheesy cauliflower mash today. I couldn't get it tender until I covered my dish with cling film, but otherwise it went as described.

I used it to make cottage pie and I'll pop some more cheese on top before it goes in the oven ☺️

Whicker · 22/09/2022 18:30

Ooh yum, @Lougle ! I want some!

Just to report that things have been much better today. Bolognese sauce for breakfast. Avocado for lunch. Bolognese and avocado for dinner. (What do you mean, repetitive? 😁)

Falling off the wagon is a feature of me, not of any particular diet! But once I am on the wagon again, this diet is better for me physically and mentally than any other I’ve ever tried. And this community is the most supportive too, which is a massive help. So thank you again everyone for picking me up (and shaking me)!

ditavonteesed · 22/09/2022 18:37

That looks lush, can you bring me some over, I'm hungry and I can't be bothered to make any food.

Sadly, it's all gone. The family devoured it like a bunch of gannets!

WantSomeEqualitea · 22/09/2022 19:54

Lougle that looks absolutely delicious!

comfortablyfrumpy · 22/09/2022 20:25

@Lougle that looks lush!

I took to making cottage pie with one half with regular mash (for the family) and the other half with celeriac mash or cauliflower (for me).

My daughters wouldn't let me get away with all cauliflower! Honestly though, I think it makes a tastier pie than with potato mash.

Lougle · 22/09/2022 20:30

Thanks everyone ☺️ It was really tasty. Not watery, although softer than mash.

pinknsparkly · 22/09/2022 21:36

@Sunsnowsun - your water/"I'll have it later" suggestion is a good idea. I do seem to find that intermittent fasting sort of does that too. I fast until lunchtime and rarely then eat the thing I thought about at breakfast time! Nuts are also a downfall for me!!

@sushinelove you are so totally right about needing to be in the right mindset. That's what I've somehow lost a little bit somewhere in the middle of this bootcamp! I do need to just pick myself up, shake myself down, give myself credit for what I have achieved, remind myself that 50% success is better than 0% and try again!

Thanks for the collective head wobble team! And see you online @FinallyHere (I'll send you a PM now if i can work out how to!)

@BIWI - your holiday looks utterly divine!!

ditavonteesed · 23/09/2022 06:54

Todays missions water!!!! I've been really lax with the water on my nights this week.

So I was looking through old photos and I actually found a very rare full length pic of myself I was shocked. Showed someone at work and they couldn't believe it was actually me. So I'm the spirit of support here is a before and after of me.
Low carbing for a year and a half now although most of the weight came off in 6 months been maintaining since. Obviously came off the wagon lots in that time and weight snuck up a bit but managed to get back on it everytime. Just want to show those starting out and those doubting that this is doable long term even with life's up and downs.

A very slim friend of mine always says if she fancies something she just pretends she has already had it, doesn't feel any different than if you had it as the moment of actually eating it passes so quickly. I've never managed it but I like the idea.

pinknsparkly · 23/09/2022 08:12

@ditavonteesed those are great before and after photos! I have some too, but I'm in my underwear so won't be posting 😂I've lost a little over 30lb since August last year on low carb bootcamps so am definitely in it for the long haul even if I intermittently lose my way a little!

I love your friends approach and I can totally see that working. The satisfaction and pleasure from eating the cake etc really does last seconds at best! That said, same as you, I'm not sure I could actually do it. If I could, I wouldn't need bootcamp in the first place!

comfortablyfrumpy · 24/09/2022 13:43

Great photos @ditavonteesed - I bet you feel good :)

I now wish I had taken some photos at Easter. I don't think I really thought I would shift the flab so successfully though.

My previous experience of losing serious weight was with WW, and I found that tough (I was always hungry). If only I had known about this WOE before!!
