Week 7 May 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - the penultimate week

BIWI · 13/06/2022 08:21

Morning all. Beautiful sunny day here - I hope it's the same for all of us.

Here's the spreadsheet, as ever

So only two more weeks to go. Still time to drop a couple of pesky pounds - perhaps more if you're strict - perhaps return to strict Bootcamp for this last fortnight?

Remember this week's challenge is to find/post recipes for your best salads. (Not allowing @venusandmars to post hers Wink)

Good luck everyone Flowers

😂 on her topic of premium, my fitness pal now lets you set your own macro goals without upgrading to the premium. It makes absolutely no difference as it still gives you the info it always has but it's nice that it doesn't tell you off for eating too much fat constantly.
Was good on night shift one, didn't actually eat anything as wasn't hungry. Tonight will be the bigger test when the tiredness kicks in properly. However I think my colleague is bringing me some kind bars, they are about 5 or 6g carbs, mainly almonds and very yummy. Probably not strictly on plan but not too bad as far as I can see.
In other news 1 more week of exams and I can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel, we may survive this. 🙄

ditavonteesed · 14/06/2022 13:20

@Mumtothreeandadog have you looked at the seriously low carb company, the bread they make is lovely. I have 2 slices most days with eggs. Doesn't make you want to eat the whole loaf like real bread does.

prettybird · 14/06/2022 13:52

@Mumtothreeandadog - there is also a low carb granola in the (Vegetarian?) recipe thread: would that help your "addiction"?

I've got to look it out myself as the granola that I used to make for ds, which was nut and fat "heavy" but also had oats and maple syrup in, is not what dh is wanting now. He's wanting something more low carb Grin (even if he still insists on eating bananas Confused)

FinallyHere · 14/06/2022 14:25

@Mumtothreeandadog

Welcome to bootcamp. I shared your concerns about remaining ahem regular and have been really happy with this aspect of LCHF eating.

You may have seen the concept of FTGV, a 'lot' of green veg. Now I plan meals around the veg: for me, the old reliables in ascending order of effectiveness for me are raw cabbage, spinach and celeriac.

The very first time I tried the LCBC way of eating, I don't pay enough attention to the vegetables and found myself feeling very uncomfortable until a whole packed of sugar free sweets got me going again.

Now, as I say, veg ate front and centre of my meal planning and all is good in my world.

You may also be surprised by how the urge and drive to snack just evaporates after a short period of acclimatisation in the first two weeks of bootcamp. Until I did it, I honestly couldn't imaging not having that monkey constantly on my shoulder urging me to eat. Constantly. Now it's gone, and I can eat or not eat just as suits me.

Welcome, I hope you enjoy the experience and it works as well for you as for me. I'd encourage you to read up all the information in the different tabs on the spreadsheet and get going, rather than waiting for the next bootcamp to start. There is always a thread running where you can ask any questions and get support.

I wholeheartedly recommend it

@Mumtothreeandadog I don't really have any plans for the next one! The last couple of years have been a bit odd (understatement!) which has meant I've sort of got out of synch with Bootcamp start times, as I've been running them a bit more often, but running shorter ones.

Usually I aim for three a year - one just after Christmas, when everyone is full of good intentions! The second one is pre-summer holidays, and the third one is in the run up to Christmas.

The May Bootcamp is usually timed to end just around the time of the summer holidays, but this one, being shorter will obviously finish sooner than that.

I appreciate that it's now a long time till October, when the pre-Christmas one would usually start, so we could do another one in July/August/September - but I'm not really sure how much demand there would be for that, given that so many people will be away on holiday.

@IveNeverTriedThisBefore Thanks for your post. I have to say that over the years we have had several doctors (from different disciplines) take part, and without fail they say just as you have, how little training in food/nutrition/diet they had when were in their undergraduate years.

It's no wonder that the very outdated NHS guidelines keep being pushed, when GPs don't know any better.

FinallyHere what does FTGV stand for?

prettybird · 14/06/2022 16:29

Fuck Tonne of Green/Good Veg Grin (see also: FLGV - Fuck Load of Green/Good Veg Wink)

prettybird · 14/06/2022 16:39

I've just been trawling through the Vegetarian Recipe thread, looking for the granola recipe.

OMG Shock. Sooooo many delicious recipes (and I'm not even veggie Wink). My mouth is watering.

No excuse not to a) eat well in this WoE and b) eat a FLGV Grin

PS And I found the granola recipe so will be making some soon Smile

Queuing4Fergs · 14/06/2022 17:50

<delurks>

For anyone missing the crunch of croutons in your salad., might I suggest a sprinkling of Cheesies to add that delicious, dry, crunchy element.

<end of PSA>

Here's my fillet of beef salad that I posted about earlier:

Looks delicious @BIWI !

Im on day 2 of an egg fast and 7lb down already, although I did gain 9lb last week being a greedy pig!

I know it's all water weight but I'm pleased with myself Blush

IveNeverTriedThisBefore · 14/06/2022 20:39

Hi all, hope everyone had a good day.

Forgot my lunch today so it was a quick dash to shop, we have microwave at work but that's it. So bought some salad leaves, cherry Tom's, cucumber, avocado, tuna in olive oil (used as dressing) and lots of mayonnaise. I have enough left in work fridge for tomorrow so might bring in some olives to go with it

D: thai Green curry, made with chicken thighs, coconut oil and milk, homemade paste and spinach. Had with butter cauliflower rice
Finished all water, having herbal tea now and sq of 99% choc. Was trying to stay light during week but I really fancied 'something' this eve

APerfectlyGoodName · 14/06/2022 22:09

Thank you @Queuing4Fergs . Since I love every kind of cheese ever, I'll look out for these.

In terms of fluctuations - I was 166 Monday. 163.4 this morning. And 162(.something) tonight!
I'm in a healthy BMI for my height (5ft 8), but the upper end of it 24.5 so my next target is 160.

Today I ate,
8am. Creamy coffee
11am eggs with spinach and cheddar
3pm chicken green salad cheese & coleslaw

I cycled 50k then, and I'm now drinking herbal tea and 85% chocolate

Lougle · 14/06/2022 22:26

B - yoghurt and clotted cream
L - salad (leaves, tomatoes, olives) with brie
D - courgette, leek, mushroom, pepper and cheese omelette.

Fluids....lost track but 2 cups of tea and 6 or 7 X 750ml water.

Newlease · 14/06/2022 22:45

Finally managed to get some food cooked.
L: chicken and pepper stir fry
D: my diy chilli, with mince, mushroom and sour cream and cheese in. Not sure what to call it, but it was yummy!!
Not got around to put the weight in on spreadsheet, will update when I pick up laptop next time.
hoping to get on next BC as well @BIWI, Oct one sounds good! Thank you for doing this, I always need someone else to go through the journey , and you all have been amazing!

venusandmars · 15/06/2022 12:23

I find this particular way of eating is one of the least faddy that there is. No sugar, no additives to make things taste sweet, no thickeners to give a fatty mouthfeel. But a glorious variety of tastes, colours and textures. It suits me. And I really like all the chat about recipies and meals ideas. Thank you to everyone who contributes - even if you're only reminding me about a simple greek salad, or the delight of a cheese omelette.

I've lost my sense of smell and taste so struggling a bit to find my normal delight and pleasure in what I'm eating. But it would be the same with a slice of toast so I'll just KOKO.

B - coffee with cream
L - salad with left over spiced chicken and avocado
D - omelette with cheese, broccoli, courgette

TheOnlyMrsW · 15/06/2022 14:19

Afternoon all, how do we feel about freezing the egg muffins? I've got some just-in-date bacon bits and on the turn mushrooms frying up in butter and was going to add some frozen spinach to make muffins to freeze but have never frozen eggs before? At a push I could turn it in a huge omelette for breakfast and lunch the next two days but I've got salad in for those which might not last so was hoping to do something which can freeze

pinknsparkly · 15/06/2022 14:53

Afternoon everyone! I'd certainly be interested in joining an August bootcamp @BIWI - the one you ran last year was actually my first one.

Food for today is
B - black coffee (IF)
L - feta salad
S - prawns in Marie rose sauce
D - meatballs in creamy sauce with shroogled spring greens

Weekend plans are to make and decorate cupcakes with my toddler for father's day so that might test my willpower 😁

Can I ask about carbs and toddlers? I would never restrict her carb intake, but I noticed the other day that her main choice of foods are 100% carbs. She's also a fruit monster which is good, and loves frozen coconut cream "ice lollies" but doesn't really eat much meat or protein unless we can get her to eat a sachet of mushed up baby food (which we only manage a few times a week). We eat as a family and she'll happily eat the carbs and mixed vegetables but won't touch the protein (unless daddy is being defensive over his bacon!!). I'm not concerned about her food intake, but I just wondered what your take on it would be?

BIWI · 15/06/2022 15:10

How old is she, @pinknsparkly?

I certainly wouldn't worry about children eating a higher carb diet as they need/use a lot of energy. But I would be concerned about habits forming from an early age.

So when you say she loves fruit, obviously that is a plus - but I'd try and steer her away from sweet things all the time. Instead of a piece of fruit every time could you give her veg instead - so celery/cucumber/carrots - on some occasions?

I would also be looking at trying to increase her protein. If she won't (yet!) eat meat, how about eggs and cheese? Does she like something like scrambled eggs, for example? Or boiled eggs and soldiers. How about cheese on toast?

And re fish - surely she must like fish fingers - all children seem to be born with that gene! Grin

BIWI just a quick question as I am going to aqua fit to cool down! I had full fat yoghurt and berries for breakfast, I didn't measure the yoghurt or berries. What do you recommend?

BIWI · 15/06/2022 18:28

Are you doing Bootcamp or Bootcamp light? If the former then no berries allowed yet!

We don't measure or weigh. But be sensible with portion sizes.

Hi all. Very late to the conversations this week. Down 1lb so ok with that. I’m behind on all the conversation so going to read through the thread. Hope you all doing ok.

IveNeverTriedThisBefore · 15/06/2022 19:15

Hi all, today was:

IF till lunch
L: rest of ydays salad- leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, tuna, whole avo and lots of olive oil

D: aubergine bake. Was meant to be cutting down on dairy this week but had got all ingredients at weekend & didn't want to waste.
So tried to up my fat content when making it, to reduce need for a much cheese
Soaked aubergine slices in oil and baked. Made tomato sauce with lots of butter, then layered aubergine with basil and very thin slices of hard mozzarella topped with a packet of feta & 5 eggs blitzed in blender. Made 4/6 portions so overall dairy/ portion was low I think
It was delicious and very filling so think fat content was reasonable. Had more salad leaves and dressing on the side
3.5L of water so far

Going to a concert tonight, feels mad on a school night! Hope everyone had a good day

glamourousindierockandroll · 15/06/2022 20:15

I'm currently lying on my bed bloody ravenous doing 'rapid return to bed' with my two year old. There's all the ingredients for a delicious greek salad downstairs and I want it. So very very much.

Lunch was ratatouille at half twelve and i've had nothing since. Kids had their tea at my mums so i've not had chance.

Urgh.
