We're back, finally. Horrendous journey back from Cardiff yesterday, not just because of the weather (still windy and very, very rainy), but also because in their wisdom the Highways Agency have closed the M4 between junctions 6 & 8, so had to do a massive detour, which resulted in us getting lost. Took us 5 hours
So to reply to various posts:
Hope you're 'settling in' nicely @coffeealldayandnight! Jump in with any questions you have and there's always someone here to help.
@SpottyBumPony and @UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea I love the sound of those recipes! Can you add them to the relevant recipe thread please? (If you haven't already, of course!)
Sorry to hear you're ill @ShangPie, although hopefully by now you will be feeling better. When it comes to medicines, go for what you need. Avoid the sugary ones if you can - don't worry about sweeteners in that situation - and just go for straight paracetamol or ibuprofen, rather than things like Lemsip. Drink hot water with lemon in it (no honey!) and make sure you stay warm and hydrated. (Cough syrups don't work anyway
)
@Wilkolampshade glad to hear you've broken through the plateau
and
for you, too, @BaconOmelette. We did tell you that a whoosh would come along!
@AThroneOfLies
I’m just pondering about life post bootcamp, I’m hoping to stay on this woe, but if on occasion I would like something sweet (maybe dessert at a special occasion) Is there a better time to eat it, I mean would it be better to eat a small treat alongside a meal rather than on its own or does it not make any difference?
There's nothing to stop you having a dessert at the end of your (special) meal when you're maintaining - the critical thing is that you keep a very strict eye on your carbs before and after such a meal, as well as keeping a watching eye on the scales to see what impact it has on you.
TBH I don't really know if it makes any difference if you have it on its own or as part of a meal - but I see that PP have answered that one already.
@Tellmeagain a stone is great progress!
@SweetPotatoDumpling
Made a lovely dinner last night...I had a bag of frozen seafood (prawns, mussels, squid etc) and sautéed it in butter, shallots, garlic, cream, chilli flakes and smoked paprika
I wish I could say that sounds lovely, but mussels and squid make me
. (But put it on the recipe thread anyway, for those that do enjoy them
)
Re the conversation started by @BaconOmelette about deep fat fryers vs air fryers, one of the last bits of 'kit' I treated myself to when we had our kitchen done was a deep fat fryer. I had always wanted one but never had the room. But since I've got it, I've never used it - because most things cooked in it seem to be high carb. It's also very difficult impossible to find recipe books for a deep fat fryer, whereas there are loads for air fryers.
That said, I'm planning on trying to make some Scotch eggs at some point, using almonds or crushed up pork crackling for the crumb. I also found a recipe for pork and prawn balls in one of my Chinese recipe books, which sounded good. And I might try making celeriac and swede chips and see if they work.
But reading @StuntNun's post made me think that perhaps an air fryer might be a bit more versatile.
Lovely picture of you @prettybird!

I'm slowly losing weight and loving eating this way but do wonder if i'm a bit too carby therefore doing exactly what you've described above. I will see what my body does for the next few weeks as I continue. I ended up having very good scrambled eggs with bacon at my brunch and an absolutely divine piece of sourdough. i think they fried it in butter, it was delicious so felt worth falling off the wagon for but I wonder if I have derailed myself. Monday's weigh in will tell! I'd like to hope I could continue this way. Mostly low carb with a few drinks and the odd treat but just generally not having many carbs. But i am probably too inclined to be strict about carrots/ beetroot and then have one treat too many!
Ultimately it's a choice you have to make - if you're strict, you'll loose the weight more quickly. If you want to include higher carb foods (but still eating a relatively low carb diet) then it will still work, just more slowly.
@UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea very good going, and have a great trip!
Hopefully that's everything - if I've missed someone out, my apologies!
