General Low Carb Bootcamp Chat

BIWI · 29/12/2021 23:37

Although I generally keep a chat thread going at the end of each Bootcamp, I think it would be better to have an ongoing chat thread that isn't linked to a specific Bootcamp.

So here it is. A sparkly new thread, for all things low carb and Bootcamp chat. As well as anything else you'd like to chat about!

Feel free to chat about anything you like here.

Very sorry to hear about your sister, SweetPotato Flowers

Regarding pre-diabetes, I do wonder whether i might have been pre-diabetic before I bootcamped last spring/summer. I was so fatigued, and often had to lie down after 45 mins or so of moderately active things like gardening. I had zero stamina and sometimes felt a bit lightheaded/trembly .

And I had quite bad ''keto flu' duing the first three of four weeks of bootcamp, which I think was a testament to just how disordered my metabolism was.

Even though I fell somewhat off the low-carb wagon from around Sept '21 onwards (esp over Christmas), I think that I have (so far) retained many of the health benefits of converting myself away from carb addiction.

I'm pretty sure I have put on weight though, and I know I won't continue to feel strong if I don't use bootcamp to re-set my way of eating.

I also need a push to lay off alcohol for a while. It is so easy to slip into more-or-less daily alcohol for a week or two over Christmas, and hard to put that comfy habit aside when the holidays are over.

@SweetPotatoDumpling

Good morning all ☺️

Breakfast/brunch this morning was a hit!

www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/keto-egg-casserole-with-zucchini-and-ham

I used smoked streaky bacon in place of ham, frying it up nice and crispy in butter before adding it to my mixture 👍 Had one 'slice' and it was incredibly filling! I now have 3 Tupperware boxes in the fridge, as it keeps well apparently 🤷‍♀️

I just want to share more of my motivation with you...it also helps me to stay on track too.

I told you that I had been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, which was a little scary for me, and a huge wake up call to improve my eating and overall health and self-care.

I lost my sister in February to diabetes. She was 48, and had been Type 1 diabetes since contracting PID aged 21. She was unfortunately one of the few who did not recover, and went on to have many complications over the years, including having a leg amputated below the knee. Devastatingly, in February, she went into a diabetic coma and suffered complete organ failure.

So you can imagine how this diagnosis now has shaken me. I have to reverse it...and I know my situation is lifestyle induced, so not at all like my sister's (I am overweight and eat all the wrong things!) but still, it is a worry at my age (57).

I AM going to do this! 💪

That is very sobering and so sorry to hear about your loss. I am pre diabetic too. Your story is a wake up call.
BestIsWest · 01/01/2022 16:04

Diabetes is on my mind too. My DF lost few toes to type 2 and I had gestational diabetes when I was having DD which I think makes me predisposed to type 2.

Shoogled sprouts with some crispy bacon for lunch. Absolutely delicious and took less than 5 minutes. I’m all about the quick meal.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 01/01/2022 17:05

Thank you all...it's great to be part of such a supporting and generous group. I'm very much looking forward to 'Boot Camp Proper' so that I can really get to grips with what I'm supposed to be doing 🤣😍

@SweetPotatoDumpling so sorry about your sister. I Can't imagine what a shock the diagnosis must be for you. This really is a very supportive place for any help you may need to get started.

My dinner was proper back to basics, chicken breast broccoli and cauliflower covered in melted cheese. So delicious. Think I'm going to use my fitness pal for a couple of weeks to keep me totally accountable while I get my head back in the game. Can't wait for the hunger to go away again, I hate it, don't know why I did it to myself.

"Little wave" after a long BC absence

I most certainly remember those shorts @VeryLittleOwl !

I intended to join the pre Christmas BC. But never managed it. I have a 2020 backstory and didn't want to derail newbies with the detail Smile

Happy New Year you lovely lot!

BIWI · 01/01/2022 19:59

Happy New Year @BrassicaBabe!

Look forward to hearing your story ... Grin

Sorry to hear about your sister sweet
Well done to you for taking Initiative with your own health.

Hope this isn’t too much of a silly question but should we also be keeping an eye on the amount of carbs we consume in a day in ‘green list’ veg?

AThroneOfLies · 01/01/2022 20:27

To those who are doing intermittent fast the simple app is good (you can bypass the paid for bits) and is a good way to track your water intake.

Also I find nutracheck more reliable for UK food, I think you can make 5-8 entries a day on the free version but it’s handy just to check if the you don’t have the nutrients list to hand

Baystard · 01/01/2022 20:37

Thanks for setting this up BIWI , I need to get back on the wagon! The recipe ideas were very welcome Grin

BrassicaBabe · 01/01/2022 20:40

Plus, oh bugger. I bought that book today that generally folks are slating🤦‍♀️

The 2020 LC story v much abridged goes something like:
Oh Feck, I've got a London marathon place
Sssh, don't tell anyone. Don't know if I want to do it.
Right, better do it now I've got a place.
Find a coach.
Tell coach about LC not expecting to "feel the love".
Coach is of course a carb lover. But otherwise I love him. Try to ignore his carb advice.
Read lots about LC running
Train LC up to 2 hours running where I consistently DIE ON MY ARSE.
Keep going, keep dying.
I try fuelling with dates and continue to die.
Disappear down rabbit holes because other LC runners on the Internet can run 50 miles on fresh air, a lick of water, and just a sniff of bacon. 🤯
Pull myself out of rabbit hole but have to give in to horrible gels with millions carbs.
Have to high carb the night before a long run.
Run London Marathon
Best day of life. Ever Grin

Still confused by the LC and endurance running thing. (I've got that book). No longer marathon training. Back to LC. But still taking gels on "Long runs". So still don't 100% understand

Mumsnet help.
Hello, your low carb bootcamp has been highly recommended so I woud like to join your 2022 bootcamp.
The issue im having is navigating mumsnet so i can see threads and posts ect

Is it a once im in the group i will automatically see the posts?

prettybird · 01/01/2022 20:46

@AThroneOfLies - no, you don't need to count the carbs on the green list of veg. That's the point of this WoE Smile

As long as you're following the Rules and only eating when hungry and having enough fat and drinking the water allocation Smile, you'll find that you are sufficiently satiated.

The only time you might consider counting the carbs would be if you have stalled for a long time and/or you are very close to target and again, you are stalling

venusandmars · 01/01/2022 20:50

Lovely to see so many people with determination for 2022 and Flowers for everyone who is facing a challenging realisation. I am definiteley with you. The good thing for me is that I have no events (a few work meetings aside) in my diary for the next 3 months. After a year of multiple major birthdays (countless friends and family one after another) and other special occasions I am looking forward to being able to focus with no temptations. I know that some find it motivating to have a goal event to work towards, but somehow it didn't work like that for me and I kept putting the solid foccused approach off until after the next event, then the next one, and the one after...

I find that I'm suddenly feeling very old - stiff when I get out of bed, sciatica which causes me to hurple when I stand up. Every movement seems to be accompanied by a groan... Shock So 2022 will be a year that I hope to end feeling more flexible. I walk a lot but I need to add in some yoga/pilates and to get back to swimming.

I had a long car journey today, which doesn't help my sciatica, but started the day with creamy scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, took chicken salad and mayo with me, and tonight had left-over sausage and red cabbage casserole with buttery green cabbage.

I have brunch tomorrow with my dcs (before one of them returns home to Europe Sad ) so I plan on fasting until then. Then I just to avoid all the foods that are served on muffins, crumpets, sourdough bread - or ask for them to be missed out.

prettybird · 01/01/2022 20:51

@Minkymoo74 - once you've posted on a thread, it should automatically come up on "threads I'm on". You can also choose to "watch" a thread. The other thing you might find useful is "bookmarking" which means that when you go back to the thread, it opens where you bookmarked it. Useful for fast moving threads.

How you bookmark depends on how you're accessing MN: browser, app (iPhone or Android) or mobile app.

@AThroneOfLies you don't need to worry about that at all. As @prettybird has said, the whole point of Bootcamp is that we don't have to count or weigh anything, as long as we follow the rules.

If you're keeping all your veg on the green list you will be fine!

Welcome @Minkymoo74! Who recommended Bootcamp to you, out of interest?

Best way to learn about Mumsnet is to just jump in! Personally I find it a lot easier to navigate on my laptop, but others seem to prefer using their phone.

Not a boot camp specific question, but can anyone recommend a good recipe app? Need to get organised so that the ankle biters don’t get in the way of successfully bootcamping… preferably one which will let me store recipes, meal plan and magically produce a shopping list!

Minkymoo74 · 01/01/2022 22:59

My friend but not sure what her name is on here 🤔

BIWI · 01/01/2022 23:07

Hi folks. Just finishing our way through the chocolate mountain and getting in the BC mindset. That veg bake sounds lush. A little planning is needed!
