Low-carb bootcamp

The final weigh-in thread: March 2021 Low Carb Bootcamp

Here's the spreadsheet

I think this has been a really fantastic Bootcamp. Lots of really great losses.

As well as that, though, like every Bootcamp I'm always amazed and often humbled by how much we get to know people. We may all be here because we're trying to lose weight, but there's so much more going on in people's lives.

Tomorrow is the final weigh-in, but I hope very much that people will continue to check in and update us all on 'their journey' (sorry for the cliché)

You could pick something up or make something to bring along and just make sure it’s very low carb. That way you can have some of what she offers and some of what you brought and you’ll have mitigated the damage by at least 50%.

Above was to @Dailyhandtowelwash 🙂

I'd also offer to take some 'nibbles' as a starter - a platter of ham, cheese, olives, crudities sour cream dip, guacamole - the kind of thing you can both eat while she's preparing the pasta. Then you know how it goes... both of you will have eaten so much of the good stuff that you'll be half stuffed and can only manage a small portion of pasta. And it would matter if you leave some because you'll be having such a great time Smile

venusandmars · 30/03/2021 11:28

wouldn't matter

I may do nibbles. I don't think I can take a whole other bit of food without looking rude (and I can't make anything so would be reliant on the offerings of a rather shite Coop anyway). But I more meant that there are times when other people matter more than what you eat - and as I can take or leave pasta, it's not going to send me spiralling into some carb madness!

I guess if you don’t normally bring or share food on visits then it would perhaps look a bit odd. We always bring something when we visit with family/friends and vice versa, so no one would think anything of it. Nibbles works just fine as a starter though, so I’d do that - just say you fancied a little bit extra to celebrate seeing her after so long or some such excuse (reason).

If you’re not all that keen on pasta anyway then that’s brilliant as it likely won’t derail you.

On the wider discussion I don’t actually think there are too many occasions on which a friend or family member’s feelings should take precedence over your own good health and mental/physical well-being - very elderly relatives is about the only one where I think that’s actually applicable. Or obviously circumstances such as very important feast occasions or bereavements/funerals/grieving.

(Only saying that because it could very easily turn into ‘having to’ go off-piste weekly, depending on how sociable one’s circle is...)

I absolutely agree @Ninkanink.

@Dailyhandtowelwash does your friend know that you're low carbing? If yes, then why would she be serving you pasta? If she doesn't, can't you tell her? If she's a really good friend, surely she'll understand?

If she's rushing in from work and you work nearby then absolutely you can offer to take/make something for her.

Is your nearest Co-op really shite? Given that their advertising slogan is 'good with food' I'd be surprised if you couldn't pick up the wherewithal for a reasonably decent antipasti platter. Ham, cheese, olives, salami, sundried tomatoes, bag of salad?

I absolutely understand that there are times when it isn't appropriate to put your needs before anyone else's, but is tonight really one of those?

How have I got to week 10 of this WOE and not known how delicious fried sprouts are ?! Grin

I always have a bag or two of sprouts in the freezer; they are well worth having as a back-up staple.

I’ve gone through a couple of bags this bootcamp but i’ve never fried them. They were delicious dipped into runny egg yolk!
Sucks they’ll be hard to get soon, I do love a good sprout.

Sorry, just laughing at the idea of getting an antipasti platter from that Co-op. Or at least one that doesn't seem like an offensive act to turn up on someone's doorstep with! It would involve Cheesestrings. Sadly a slogan doesn't mean much on the ground.

My diet's never come up in general conversation and we'd originally agreed to go to the café so it was only when she said she really wanted to host and would do pasta, yesterday, that it became relevant to her. And she won't have had time to shop, and I haven't had time, and here we are. I've had a big lunch for once so won't be particularly hungry, and have no emotional issues around pasta (could happily never eat it again) so a bit of it for dinner to make all our lives easier is fine with me.

I'm quite open about low-carbing by the way. No general issues telling people at all. It just didn't really occur to me this time to say anything other than 'great' as I know she's very stressed and I am not that bothered.

I’m sure it’ll be fine given that pasta isn’t a trigger food for you. Just be very careful on portion size because it is very carby and too much will cause a setback with your fat adaption, and even if the pasta itself isn’t a trigger too much to it will likely cause an issue with your secondary cravings for other carbs the day after if you have too much of it.

Will do, @ninkanink. We meal plan so I know what is for dinner tomorrow (Nigel Slater's Coq au Reisling with cream - yum) and I don't snack ever so the path is clear!

There is also the possibility that she said pasta meaning something quick and easy and I'll get there later to be presented with a salad. :-)

@BIWI don't worry I should have said that all of it would be tweaked slightly to fit the BC no processed shit rules so dark choc not sweetened drops, my mega healthy peanut butter no sweeteners, leave out the stevia etc.

Anyway, thanks for the caution and will be wary of 'keto' labelled videos but now I've watched a couple YouTube is bombarding me with them!!

I like the idea of plating up for tomorrow - I've done that sometimes when my salads got a bit out of control. And yes, the food isn't going anywhere!!

Planning dinner - omelette, mushrooms, SLC toast but now I really want beans!! What could I have / make instead that provides a 'sauce' for my omelette??

Cream into your mushrooms? Bit of shallot, bit of garlic, light touch of Worcestershire sauce?

Week 5, run 3 of C25K completed - IMVHO the hardest run. You go from having run 2 x 8 minute runs for run 2, to 20 minutes of running without a break! But I did it.

Well done, @BIWI! That jump is brutal, isn't it? I remember being totally disbelieving when I first saw week 5 ahead of me.

What actually happened was that my brother annoyed me so much the night before I did the run that I ended up running for 40 minutes powered by fury! I then binned C25K and ended up doing my first Park Run shortly afterwards - I STILL can't believe I can actually do that.

I'd love to know the thinking behind the sudden jump at the end of week 5 - especially as week 6 goes back to intervals of running.

Presumably it's to help you realise how much of it is in your head as opposed to lack of stamina/endurance?

I love that this thread is still going strong, I get so much out of it. I think New Years resolutions should be new spring resolutions. It's so much easier to keep active and happy when the weather is good. I'm now inspired to buy a bike --I've been meaning to do it for ages and my office has a really good cycle to work scheme.

I agree @BIWI when I saw the next run was all running and no breaks I assumed it would be for about 12 minutes, so 20 almost stopped me going. However today I've just completed W7R3 at 25 minutes non stop and am starting to feel a bit more confidence in my abilities. I may even buy some proper clothing soon to even look the part!

Today I have also ordered some Low Carb bread. I've been putting it off as I was trying to break my previous habits of toast for breakfast and a sandwich at lunch, but now this bootcamp is ending I thought I would treat myself so I can occasionally have a lovely sandwich or egg on toast. I now can't wait for it to arrive! Will also be handy for when I go back into the office if the previous nights dinner isn't suitable for me to take in.
