@BIWI I know. Its the fasting affect. Eat nothing for 38 hours and then feel like you deserve a reward. I need to get beyond it

BIWI · 02/03/2021 14:38

Yes you absolutely do! No bread. If you're hungry, eat something else.

Otherwise all you're going to do is to undo the work you've done so far.

Stop seeing carby foods as a reward or a treat

What are peoples thoughts on the below? I'm a long term veggie anyway, for ethical/environmental reasons rather than health, but my other half eats a lot of meat, and it does concern me a bit. But I also wonder if the carbs consumption could account for any of it?

Moody foodie, love it!

cheeseisthebest · 02/03/2021 14:59

Just had some chicken, leeks, bacon and courgette cooked in butter with some wholegrain mustard stirred through. Delicious.
Had scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and spinach for breakfast. 3 pints of water down.

This, to me, is the key paragraph:

The findings, published in the journal BMC Medicine, are based on analysis of the health records of 474,985 middle-aged Britons. The researchers examined details provided about their diets with information from their medical records about hospital admissions and also mortality data for an average of eight years

I think this is a classic case of 'correlation is not causation'

Without knowing what the details were that they gave it's very difficult to comment sensibly. What about their lifestyles as well as their diets? Did they smoke? How much alcohol did they drink? Did they take any exercise? etc

It's long irked me that red meat gets lumped in with processed meats, as the two are - have to be! - very different.

Personally I'd take the findings of this with a very large pinch of salt. Which, as we know, is good for us.

@BIWI thanks for your insight Smile i wondered if I had overdone it with the fat! Haha it didnt last long and I feel fine today so who knows

1stMrsF · 02/03/2021 15:20

Just checking in. Have managed a lunchtime walk both days for my challenge but nothing more adventurous yet.
L - some leftover Thai minced pork stir-fry, with additional wilted spinach and a scrambled egg both cooked in butter stirred through. It was a bit random but it worked really well.
D - Moussaka and wilted Cavelo Nero
NSV my jeans are starting to feel loose despite my temporary blip on the scales.

“However, it was mainly meat-eaters who were overweight or obese who were running these risks, it emerged during the study. Most of the increased risks of disease identified were reduced once participants’ body mass index was taken into account.

“Differences in BMI across the categories of meat consumption appear to account for a substantial part of the increased risks,” the article in BMC Medicine says.”

So if I understand the above correctly, what it actually says is that being overweight or obese increases your risk? That’s not new news!

StuntNun · 02/03/2021 16:54

Yes that's really bad Oneborn as fasting increases your insulin sensitivity so if you end a fast by eating bread you're just going to send yourself back towards insulin resistance. Plan for low carb treats instead, there are plenty of them. How about ending a fast with a bowl of strawberries and cream instead?

AWryGiraffe I always read that as AwryGiraffe I don't think you can relate studies based on a conventional "healthy" diet to a low carb high fat diet at all. They're just too different. Remember when the five-a-day needed to be increased to ten-a-day. In my mind that's desperately trying to get enough micronutrients to outweigh the damage being done by carbs and especially sugar. Also in these epidemiological studies a Big Mac is considered to be the same as a sirloin steak and a KFC is the same as a roast chicken dinner. Not to mention all the problems inherent in epidemiological studies that rely on people being able to accurately report what they ate. There was a big study recently that showed that dieters were routinely under reporting the number of calories they ate on the order of 1000 calories per day.

Bit of a crap food day for me as the pork chops I cooked for lunch were past their best and tasted gamey. I did my best but had to throw out a fair amount. Fingers crossed I don't get food poisoning.

Day two of the March challenge and I'm wearing silver Celtic knot earrings today. I didn't go for an exercise challenge as I already work out five times a week and I'm halfway through a plank challenge working my way up to 2.5 minutes in a straight-arm plank.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/03/2021 16:58

Are the 3 egg whites I've got left from my Caesar dressing any good for eating eg egg white omelette?? Or are they 'empty' from our perspective???

kilojules · 02/03/2021 17:08

@ChristMyArse

Hi all!

I am heavier happier soul tonight. It didn't hit home yesterday but today it's just been so much easier and better. Thanks to those who have commented 😘

Today has been good food wise .. as per @1stMrsF the fact that I'm able to jump back in to this rather than give up is enlightening.

Some brill loses, well done and KOKO everyone else.

I have not 1, but 2 MRI scans tomorrow at two different places, one at 7am 😩😱 and the other at half 11 so intending to fast until I get home.

I'm off for what is hopefully a peaceful sleep until the bastard alarm goes off at 5.45am

Hope the MRIs went ok and results fine
NotwatchingSpooks · 02/03/2021 17:10

Afternoon, hope your okay after those chops Stuntnun

My March Challenge is to do at least 10mins on my Watt bike everyday, so far so good. However, I found myself prowling the kitchen yesterday and had far too many teaspoons of cream and almonds, so am setting myself an additional challenge not to snack on either of these for the rest of March. I am keen to get below 10 stone, but I seem to be hovering above it and suspect that I am sabotaging myself with the boredom munchies.

Dinner tonight is my LCHF version of moussaka, basically really good mince with shallots, leeks, garlic, tin of toms, cooked up and then cooked with layers of pre-roasted aubergine, topped with cheddar and parmesan. Served with a crunchy homemade slaw.

plus the last litre of water that I need to drink.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2021 17:10

Yes @ChristMyArse I’d missed that! Flowers wishing you well.

kilojules · 02/03/2021 17:24

Catching up on today messages. Sorry to hear some of you are poorly/not feeling great/struggling! Hope you feel better soon

Some of the challenges are really motivating! Except the sea swimming!! Can't imagine even dipping my little toe in! Standing under cold shower Brrrrr!! I live less than 3miles from the beach and usually only get a couple of swims in the summer.

Despite broken sleep psyched muself to a 4.1mile (6.6k) run this morning

With all the talk of bread(which is my kryptonite) I really started craving some. Made these low carb almond, flaxseed, wholemeal rolls to go with the homemade chicken soup on bone broth base. So fluffy and warm with lashings of butter! Was in heaven! The recipe called for egg whites so ended up dropping the yolks into the soup yum!
I was also baking for my hubby and son. Made Apple streusel cake and started to crave a treat as well so made a low carb apple crumble. Walnut, butter and cinnamon crunch. Subbed half an apple for blueberries to reduce the "carb-on footprint" Grin skipped the sweetner to keep it BC friendly. Doesn't look like much but Really hit the spot!

Dinner will be courgetti bolognaise

Carb-on footprint! Made me chuckle...

prettybird · 02/03/2021 17:26

I'm going to add in "no snacking" into my March challenge too Blush. This is after, like Spooks , I spent yesterday prowling round the kitchen and eating almonds and salami when I was bored rather than hungry Blush

So far I've done well today Grin partly because I've run out of sliced Emmenthal Wink

Now must go and have some water Grin

ZiggZagg · 02/03/2021 18:14

Evening all!!

So I'm still not well, I've come home from work and an ambulance is outside carting my DF off to hospital.

Then goes in my own home and there is DH writhing in agony, so he is now in hospital.

I'm sorry to say, I have inhaled lots of custard creams whilst waiting for my dinner to be delivered.

At least I had fasted today Sad

Bestbees · 02/03/2021 18:18

Phew, lots to catch up on!

I tried a cold shower.... Lasted 15 seconds!

Whoever is trying the Delia chicken I hope you enjoy it, we thought it was great.

Mayo I just do this: 1egg yolk whisk with tsp dijon mustard and salt. Take 1/2 cup light olive oil. Whisk in tiny bit at time till mayo like. Splash of lemon. Easy peasey.

The rolls look great @Ninkanink what's the recipe?

Exercise challenge done and cooking this for tea www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fish-recipes/crispy-skin-lemon-sole/
Will report on it!

@FusionChefGeoff I use egg whites to make meringues for the rest of the family. Also good in cocktails 😊

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 02/03/2021 18:20

So sorry @ZiggZagg Thanks

Just to clarify the wholemeal just means the way they look. No flour in them!
Dailyhandtowelwash · 02/03/2021 18:31

@ZiggZagg what a nightmare. Any idea what's going on?

@kilojules could you share the recipe for those rolls? They look amazing.

ListenLinda · 02/03/2021 18:33

Okay... the reason for me being a snacky twat has become apparent. The arrival of the period. Meh

Bestbees · 02/03/2021 18:36

@ZiggZagg Flowers

ouchmyfeet · 02/03/2021 18:44

What a day @ZiggZagg , hope everyone is okay soon Thanks

I'm struggling to keep up with the thread this week as got so much work on, but I prepared at the weekend so food has been going okay.

L: leftover shepherds pie (celeriac mash on top) and homemade coleslaw
T: lamb doner meat (homemade) with buttered cabbage and spinach and more coleslaw. Bit random but tasty Smile
