@Dailyhandtowelwash I couldn't see that recipe, just the ingredients, the site said I had to buy the book. Can you post it on the recipe thread? Having said that, I look at some of the other examples from the book and several sounded really delicious, the Cool Greens with Hot Asian Dressing sounded lovely. So I may well be adding yet another cookery book to my collection. Do you have the book, and does it have great photos (preferably one for each recipe)? That's what I enjoy most - looking at the pictures! And it's what inspires me to try something new.

@prettybird @MilesJuppIsMyBitch Cold water showers?? You're mad I tell you, mad I seem to have lots of friends who are into wild swimming (seems to be women of a certain age, in the main...) We live by the sea and there is nothing that induce me to get out of my cosy clothes and into that icy Scottish water. I've already said to friends and family that if they ever hear of me joining in then they know its FOMO and I'm joining in with something just for the sake of it!

@BIWI I couldn't access the link for your mayonnaise. Despite being a lot foodie and a bit cheffy, I admit that I have never even tried to make my own mayonnaise Blush

Food today:
B - coffee with cream and a long walk
L - omelette made with cheese, ham, and left-over veg, with a side salad
D - some variation of cauliflower cheese, depending on what is in the veg box.

And tomorrow it's the Delia spiced chicken.

I'm trying to focus on drinking all my water. I've been out walking a lot over the last couple of months, to help lift my mood as an antidote to the general miserable of life. However, with nowhere to pee, it does limit my water intake. I'm trying to balance it out by drinking early in the morning, and then late afternoon onwards, but that meant that I was up twice in the night.

Anyway, day 2 of March, and I'm still being kind to my feet, and I planked for 31 seconds.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 02/03/2021 12:17

@venusandmars we do have the book, and another of hers, and they are lovely books with great photography. Will post photos from my phone.

1stMrsF · 02/03/2021 12:18

@LittleMy77 the examples you've given do mention butter, cream etc. so this may not apply, but I find if I have soup or salad I often feel hungry in the afternoon. Lots more fat and a bit more protein can be the answer. If I am heating up soup I add a knob of butter and a splash of cream. Also making sure that meat isn't too lean - I often eat lunch at school and if I avoid the carbs and just have the meat and the veg I'm starving (because school menus follow stupid high carb low fat NHS advice) unless I add fat. You could also add avocado on the side, add mayonnaise to salad or vegetables or include an egg if you aren't eating very much protein. Finally though I find on this WOE that I do get hungry, but it passes quickly so having water or herbal tea when the hunger strikes might also be enough to get through to dinner.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 02/03/2021 12:19

Recipe plus tonight’s dinner, Goan fish curry, and a photo of it.

This is another of hers from the same book, that I want to try next:

We only add a very tiny amount of sugar, not 1tbsp.

I'll stop posting now.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2021 12:23

Oh I love Diana Henry’s books. I’ve got three and am tempted every day single day to buy more...but I’ve resolved to cook as many recipes from the ones I already have until summer, then I’ll add a couple more to my collection! Great books for beautiful writing and photography.

nowlook · 02/03/2021 12:27

I remember Diana Henry being on Woman's Hour a fair bit a few years ago handtowel and venus. She did tuna with preserved lemon, olives and avocado live on air. I'd never heard of a preserved lemon before Grin It's probably still available on BBC Sounds.

VeryLittleOwl · 02/03/2021 12:28

Did anyone else find themselves shouting at Sky News this morning with the piece they were running on removing fat from processed food? I mean, not that we should be eating processed food anyway, but showing a plain beefburger being cooked whilst banging on about the evils of fat - the beefburger on its own is fine, it's the chips and the bun!!!

And breathe.

I've been digging out my septic tank outflow pipe this morning, because it's blocked up with silt. (Definitely silt. That's what I keep telling myself...) I've just had to put all my clothes in the washing machine and have a shower and funnily enough I'm not really feeling like too much for lunch. DH is making me cauliflower soup as a thank you for tackling it (he's hurt his back, he would normally have been out with me helping). Annoyingly after all that it's not something I can fix myself, I'm going to need Magnus and his jet drain blaster - haven't got enough water pressure to clear it with the garden hose.

VeryLittleOwl · 02/03/2021 12:29

Hit post too soon, sorry - was going to say to the few posters who've said very kind things about my rural life, this is one of the big downsides!!

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 02/03/2021 12:49

Ever tempted to move to a nice flat in a city @VeryLittleOwl?

(They send a nice man round to clear the poo silt).

VeryLittleOwl · 02/03/2021 12:59

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

Ever tempted to move to a nice flat in a city *@VeryLittleOwl*?

(They send a nice man round to clear the poo silt).

I used to have a lovely flat in a nice-ish bit of Croydon, in one of the roads off Purley Way - 5 minute walk to the station, 5 minute walk to the park. I could finish work in central London at 5pm on a Friday and be sitting down to dinner somewhere in Europe by 8.30. Sometimes I miss that life so much it hurts. And then I read about another stabbing just round the corner from where I used to live and think I'm probably better off up here!

I have an NSV to report today as well - I'm wearing the size 10 jeans I bought in the Fat Face sale at Christmas and they fit :) Okay, I don't need a belt to keep them up, but they're not uncomfortable.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/03/2021 13:09

I might just give that Mayo a go @BIWI as I've just very successfully managed a passable Caesar dressing from the recipe linked yesterday - sorry, can't remember who posted it but I am pleased to report its YUMMY with my bacon / avo / chicken salad and I resisted the temptation to snaffle a triangle of DS's quesadilla

Hah. I have a septic tank as well. When I moved in the previous owners said they hadn't had anything done to it since they moved in - over 20 years ago!

They'd forgotten where it was in fact. It was only when clearing a bit of walled bed that I found the top.

Clearly, it's working beautifully (must be a bit large for the size of house). Alternatively, it's all about to go hugely, horribly, wrong any day now Grin.

Another good reason to stick with a low-carb, less-waste, diet.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/03/2021 13:16

Ditto - I was up the road from you in Brixton. I do miss it, but then I prefer this right now, and I do intend to retire early and wander the globe again then.

Congratulations on the 10s! Flowers

BIWI · 02/03/2021 13:25

@venusandmars

Here's another mayo recipe:

Ingredients
Serves: 4
1 egg
1 teaspoon mustard
240ml (8 fl oz) oil
salt and pepper to taste

Method

  • Place the egg, mustard and salt and pepper in a tall thin jug. Most stick blenders come supplied with one.
  • Pour in the oil and allow to settle for a few seconds.
  • Put the end of the blender on the bottom of the jug and hold it there while you whizz the egg for about 10 seconds. You should see the mayo begin to form.
  • After 10 seconds slowly lift the blender to the top and then slowly down again. Repeat until all the oil is incorporated and the mayo is at the consistency you want.
  • This should last for 2 to 3 days if kept in the fridge.

Lunch today:

Chinese Omelette made with leftover seasoned pork from the Dan Dan Noodles I made for DH the other day.

Made with two eggs, some red pepper and spring onions, and black sesame seeds.

The tiniest bit of hoisin sauce drizzled over for balance - I had made the noodle recipe for the first time with a few Chinese ingredients I hadn’t used before and I’m not sure whether I miscounted some teaspoons/tablespoons somewhere (I had to adapt the recipe for more meat) or whether it was just not quite what our palates are used to, but the end result was very salty/savoury indeed. Delicious but just a little too much.

Anyway with the egg and extra veg it was very tasty and not too salty, just needed that little touch of sweetness.

He does. It was all leftovers!

cheeseisthebest · 02/03/2021 13:37

Sorry thought I'd quoted BIWI then asking if my husband cooked his own (stupid) vegan food!

I say stupid because it's so carb heavy, quite processed and I wish he still ate meat fish and dairy!

Ninkanink · 02/03/2021 13:50

@cheeseisthebest batch cook your 3 or 4 favourite recipes next time you make them and freeze the leftovers in small one-portion containers - then there’ll always be something you can eat quickly for those days where you’re tired/don’t want to bother with cooking.

cheeseisthebest · 02/03/2021 13:59

That is actually a really good idea. Could do some beef/lamb stews or moussaka.

Ninkanink · 02/03/2021 14:04

Yes that’s what I do. There’s always a good selection in the freezer to hopefully cater to every mood (I am very moody with food. A moody foodie, if you like 😆).

Oneborneverydecade · 02/03/2021 14:05
