2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

 • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
 • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

@keeponkeepinon

Ps. Is it worth buying the ipd book? I had it when it came out and I dont know what happened to it. Its over 10 years ago so can't remember what was in it!
I've got both, they're pretty good and you can find used copies on Amazon more ethical retailers are available for about £3 each I'd think. Worth it for the onion bhaji recipe alone!
Linnet · 12/10/2020 20:31

Thanks to everyone who suggested ways I could take my lunch to work. I’ll have a look at the suggestions and see what might work for me. I’ll also keep hoping that they give us back our fridge and microwave!

I’m also going to try to cook some Brussels sprouts in the microwave, they sound good.

RitaEllen · 12/10/2020 20:44

I’m struggling with drinking water! I don’t drink tea or coffee, what else can I drink?

Dinner was successful (lunch less so) I made my own hollandaise sauce which I had with asparagus, scrambled eggs, roast tomatoes and onions, and pork

I’ve been to the shop and bought some stuff to make a salad for lunch tomorrow.

ZiggZagg · 12/10/2020 20:52

@RitaEllen do you like sparkling water? I just squeeze some lemon or lime into mine and tastes lovely and refreshing.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 12/10/2020 20:58

@AthelstaneTheUnready please can you add me to the magic spreadsheet.

Weighing in today at 9stone 4 which is the heaviest I've been for a couple of weeks.

I started bootcamp lurking in February and have lost 24lbs since then.
I need to lose the last few pounds to hit my target weight of 9 stone. That puts me right in the middle of my healthy bmi.

The one good side to Covid has been it's been easy to stick to the WOE without any eating out temptations.

1WildTeaParty · 12/10/2020 21:00

Drink suggestions:
Fresh mint leaves are lovely in hot water.
I like citrus 'teas' - hot -or made with cold water.
Rose-hip and hibiscus is very good (hot or cold and made with 'tea' bags)
For a delicious hot and sweet hit: 'Rooibos and honey with fig ' is perfect.

We have tried the 'infusions' here and those have gone down well.

I've a new water-filter and water suddenly tastes really good.

1WildTeaParty · 12/10/2020 21:04

B- Egg and bacon and aubergine
L Cauliflower and broccoli cream and cheese soup (watered down and blitzed leftovers from Sunday dinner). Slice of ham.
D - Delia's mince with yogurt sauce and stirfried greens.

Feel satisfied.

BrassicaBabe · 12/10/2020 21:04

Checking in for the chat if that's ok. Won't join the spreadsheet. I'm at maintenance. Joined BC in oct'17 at about 11.7, got to maintenance of 9.10 in about May 2018. A few ups and downs in between (never back to original weight, just a bit over where I like here and there) but happy where I am and happy with LC as a permanent WoE.

Think I've got some clothes pics that I've taken along the way.

For those with rubber beans, have a google for Sri Lanka RunnerBean curry. Love it!

Margaritawithlime · 12/10/2020 21:08

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer you may well have done it now but I usually do my steak in something like groundnut oil or avocado oil. I like to sear mine very high and olive oil has a low smoking point so it can make my kitchen too Smokey!

ShagMeRiggins · 12/10/2020 21:08
@prettybird how long do you microwave the sprouts for?
Catching up on the thread but had to pause and reply and ask if the technical term “shoogle” has been mentioned... Wink

AthelstaneTheUnready · 12/10/2020 21:10

You're on, @ThinkAboutItTomorrow!

Yeah, they do get a bit rubbery when they grow too large, @BrassicaBabe

ilovecherries · 12/10/2020 21:12

Day 1 safely over and kitchen cleaned and closed for the night.

B: nothing
L: HM spicy chicken goujons with green salad and Mayo
D: HM Veg curry which left me feeling a bit hungry so followed by a wedge of Brie and a baby bel.

VeryLittleOwl · 12/10/2020 21:22

B: Nothing
L: Leftover cauliflower cheese
D: Chilli and veg

Water: 6 pints (think that's the most I've ever drunk in one day and I'm sloshing!)

VeryLittleOwl · 12/10/2020 21:23

Meant to add, loving seeing all the pictures, both historic and current :)

ShagMeRiggins · 12/10/2020 21:30

Is olive oil best for cooking steak or is there something better?

I prefer salted butter. Specifically Noirmoutier sel de mer from the Vendée, but as we’ve not been back to France for over a year now (thank you, virus thingy), my best recommendation is the Waitrose Normandy butter.

Salted butter must have crystals in it, so I say. Add the tiniest drop of olive oil to prevent burning.

Of course Grin

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 12/10/2020 21:51

Thanks @Margaritawithlime yeh too late, just finished eating. But I'll definitely try ground nut oil next, I like searing my steaks at a high temp too but dont know much about the different oils. I over cooked the steak and ruined the sauce anyway Grin

PastramiNoRye · 12/10/2020 21:53

I'm a big fan of a shoogle...why it doesn't appear in more recipes, I have no idea!

CeibaTree · 12/10/2020 22:02

Sounds like everyone is off to a good start :) Thanks BIWI for running this again! I lost 2 stone over the past year low carbing but have stalled mostly due to booze and less exercise over lockdown. My goal is to lose a stone by Christmas so this bootcamp is perfect timing!

Mimosa1 · 12/10/2020 22:09

Goodness, 200+ posts on day 1 - exciting! To the PP who said she liked the feeling of being part of something, I know exactly what you mean. I've edited my Ocado order for next week on two separate occasions today as I was so inspired by people's menus. I'm loving all the photos too! I'm going to find something to wear that's a bit snug and use that as motivation. I had mostly a good day food wise but then reflexively popped a couple of the kids' grapes in my mouth when clearing up after them. I must remember I AM NOT A DUSTBIN, I AM NOT A DUSTBIN!

Summery1 · 12/10/2020 22:10

Hi all.
Thanks a mill to @BIWI and @AthelstaneTheUnready. I'm totally up for this BC. It is perfect timing for me. I finished 2019 BC at 156lbs, was 159 over the weekend, but 161 this morning! My goal is 150lbs. Once I get into it, I find LC eating feels great. I do miss confectionary in my gob, but nowhere else.
Hi @ShagMeRiggins, @ilovecherries, @VeryLittleOwl @StuntNun. Oldies and Newbies, I'm somewhere in between, but looking forward to our journey!!

Frozen sprouts in butter!! I put them in a single layer in a medium frying pan. Add butter, salt, cover and in the oven about 30 minutes. Easy peasy.

I got up this morning, boiled 3 eggs to have at 11 for breakfast at work. And left them at home. Angry Anyway the local petrol station did a mushroom & bacon omelette, with rocket and cherry tomatoes ( ate outside in the cold) but kept me going 'til 4.30.
Snack- slice of ham & cheddar.
D: steak, green veg. homemade mayonnaise.

I tried to make garlic mayo. I put egg yoke, lemon, mustard, lemon juice, garlic & oil in bowl. Blended for ages but it never thickened. Sort of separated a little. BUT tasted delicious!! Children loved it, ate loads of veg dipped in it. So definitely not a failure.
And as advised here, because I'm not great on the water front, a bottle of water at my desk. Drank 1.5 today, will aim for 2.

The pictures are fabulous. I have size 12 jeans that are uncomfortably tight/too small. My goal is to fit these comfortably.

@Mimosa1 I didn't say it properly, but YES, agree with PP who mentioned the togetherness. I love the group feeling.

prettybird · 12/10/2020 22:47

I've been teased about my appropriately used Wink strikethroughs, my dislike of mushrooms, my snacks of Brazil nuts don't actually particularly like them and shoogling in just one day Hmm

It's good to be back Grin

Reporting back: not a perfect first day (1l of water but 1l in the form of herbal teas) as I had a block of dark chocolate mud afternoon but other than that, fairly good.

I'll have lost 25kg overnight, right???? Grin
