2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

Friends have just dropped round some home baking of Tiffin, gingerbread and lemon drizzle cake Hmm

It looks lovely but dh is going to get it eat it all dh is very happy about this Wink Fortunately, our friend knows what Boot Camp is (but hadn't known I was back on it) so will be ok with me not having any. She's tried Boot Camp herself occasionally but can never cope with the 2 weeks off alcohol Hmm

ShagMeRiggins · 15/10/2020 17:44

Sorry, but WTF is it with friends dropping off sweet stuff? Is this regional?

I never have friends just pop by and drop cakes or cookies or biscuits to me unless it’s Christmas or my birthday, but 2-3 of you have mentioned this recently.

I’m Shock and Confused.

Superspecs · 15/10/2020 17:51

After a good first few days I've had a busy day and haven't drank enough water and had some lentilly thing from the hospital canteen, I think lentils are carby aren't they? :-( If I was going to eat carbs I might have chosen something nicer than lentils!

Just having a big water to try to get back on track. Thanks for all the food inspiration, that burger pie thing looks great. Bulletproof coffee sounds bleurghh though, what are the advantages to it?

prettybird · 15/10/2020 17:55

It's just the generous Scots Grin

I'm going to be making another two loaves of sourdough bread tomorrow (ready tomorrow bake on Saturday or a few days after - they'll sit in the fridge developing a sourdough tang until I'm ready): one will go to these friends and the other will be for dh.

poorbuthappy · 15/10/2020 18:42

And the generous Welsh. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just made the cheese burger pie which was lovely. Didn't have any Lea and perrins so will be buying that on the weekend

EastofEdna · 15/10/2020 18:43

Another day done.

Bf: cheese omelette
Lunch: cauliflower and cheese soup
Tea: garlic prawn veggie stir fry
W: 2l

Whoever mentioned Seedlip up thread, it is very expensive for little taste - I’d rather drink water!

Lentils are definitely not allowed.

(Although they're lovely!)

The only reason people have bulletproof coffee is to get more fat into their diet.

Steak and a mountain of creamy cabbage for tea, but I’m craving the farm shop treats I bought for everyone else. Just need to push through this and imagine The Stick coming for me.

Anotherducker · 15/10/2020 18:56

And I’m really grumpy, anyone else?

sheepysheep · 15/10/2020 19:24

Yay it’s working, my wedding ring is loose

Supper consumed - salmon, swede, sprouts and TSB with a wedge of butter. And yes prettybird the sports were shoogled- who knew the poppity ping was so good at cooking sprouts?!

verylittleowl I’m a sheep farmer too! Well - I have a proper job which pays the mortgage - but my favourite job is the farming. Have you started tupping yet?

Sounds like everyone has kicked off to a great start ⭐️

Totalshambles · 15/10/2020 19:25

Sorry you are grumpy @Anotherducker, hard resisting treats you know will be yummy. I am feeling very smug for making a choc cake for the kids and not even having a teeny bowl lick - rinsed straight away to avoid temptation.

Are we allowed a sprinkle of flaxseed? Sorry for tmi but think I need to up the fibre....

Doilooklikeatourist · 15/10/2020 19:29

@Anotherducker , no I'm really chirpy and annoying I thought I'd be stamping round whining for wine ( as it's Thursday and the weekend starts here , usually ) having a nice mug of Gold Blend ☕️

Been busy , we started to paint the study , it's at the worse before it gets better stage , and then we have a phone call from the estate agent , we have a viewing tomorrow, so that's taken my mind off alcohol and treats

B scrambled eggs and grilled bacon
L homemade mushroom soup ( delicious and I'll make it again )
D celariac dauphinois , 2 sausages , green cabbage , broccoli , mushrooms and a small portion of baked cherry tomatoes

Loads of glasses of water
Note to self .. no cheese today .. must be a record

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 15/10/2020 19:32

I'm grumpy! DS has just had a delivery of deep fried choc chip cookies from Domino's!
Dinner was roast beef and veg fried in butter and oil and served with horseradish mixed in with a tablespoon of mayo. Nice but not quite as lovely as a deep fried cookie.

RitaEllen · 15/10/2020 19:34

And I’m really grumpy, anyone else?

Yes! I feel really grumpy too and totally demotivated as I’ve lost no weight so far. I’m not sure where I’m going wrong.

Today I had creamy broccoli soup for lunch and for dinner pork chops with carrot and swede mash and asparagus. I had a snack of a small piece of cheese when I finished work (I had intended it to eat with my soup at lunch but forgot)

Maybe I’m still not drinking enough, my ankles are massively swollen. I’ve had 1.5L so far today. I might try less dairy too. I’ve eaten cheese everyday this week.

Titsywoo · 15/10/2020 19:36

Cheeseburger pie tonight! With asparagus and spinach. Feeling good today!

BasicMadeira · 15/10/2020 19:51

Glad I am not the only grumpy one! Today was so blah I wanted to turn to sugar to comfort and sedate me. Also boredom I realize although I have lots to do.
I am in a pickle though; I have eaten a fair bit of cheese today (I know, I know) so while my carbs are low my fat is high and I am definitely above and beyond what my body needs calorie wise. Is this still okay? Am I stuck forever in a mid nineties CICO mindset?
Any advice appreciated x

ilovecherries · 15/10/2020 20:06

In spite of the fact that I’m having a particularly shitty life episode at the moment - 2020 - the year that keeps on giving 😟, I’ve managed to do well with food. Three pounds down his morning. And while peeing on a stick is very much not needed, I pinched one of DD’s prescribed multistix tonight and it was gratifyingly purple despite drinking well. And my belt went into the next hole. Given my waist expands long before I put on weight anywhere else, that was pleasing. Also felt better on my run today - yesterday I gave up after three miles, I was so knackered.

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 15/10/2020 20:07

Thanks @BIWI I'll give the bulletproof coffee a miss. Sometimes it's all I have time for and stops me feeling hungry for hours, I guess this is where I should be pre-prearing something!

Yes last night was a shock.to the system! Haven't had a bad night like that since last week 😂 The little buggers!! I have a cot on either side of my bed and I swear they tag each other in, when one gets settled the other gets up!!

Haha the dreaded carb counter 🙈 I downloaded it on someone's recommendation. Problem is, like the WW app I downloaded after foolishly allowing a friend to talk me into joining so she could get 3 months free I never stick to inputting what I eat. Cant be bothered with the faff of scanning things etc. So I only used it a couple times weeks ago when I switched to low carb. The daily allowance is if you set it to track your macros within a certain amount of calories. The app has been deleted though, promise Grin

No nuts or seeds! Why do you feel the need for fibre?

You should be getting everything you need from the veg/salad you're eating - along with enough water and fat to prevent constipation.

Don't mistake less frequent 'goes' for constipation!

If you're not drinking enough, this won't be helping you and swollen ankles is a huge clue!

And if you really haven't lost, then definitely drop the dairy.

I must be in the minority because I really like Seedlip Spice, although I'm not keen on the Garden one. I have it with Fevertree Light tonic for an occasional treat on a "school night". Also I don't sleep well when I have alcohol thank you perimenopause so it's better for me than the real thing.

I have to say I'm desperate to try this cheeseburger pie everyone is raving about. That will definitely be on my menu next week.

Superspecs some people find they need to up their fat macro when they get close to their goal weight and bulletproof coffees can be useful for that. They're not ideal for Bootcamp though as they have a lot of calories and very little nutrients. If you're going to be eating fewer calories while you lose weight then if anything you want nutrient dense foods.

Discontented I didn't even know you could buy jars of aubergines! Are they nice?

MsAwesome you might benefit from adding electrolytes if you're always thirsty. My big tell for needing electrolytes is when I wake up in the night feeling thirsty and needing a wee. Blush A pinch of salt and squeeze of lemon juice in your water works too for replacing sodium and potassium.

NorthOfAmazing · 15/10/2020 20:35

Grumpy here too. The water is a slog to get through and Im not seeing any loss either this week. BIWI and everyone else is right, in the past when Ive had a small cheat, it took me about a week to get back to where I was - I really lost so much progress for very little gain.

Its now been 8 weeks since Ive had any bread/potatoes/any significant alcohol and Im struggling for variety. Ive made lots of notes of everyone's recipes though and will definitely try the cheeseburger pie and the meatloaf!

Progress today
Day off so more scope for cooking proper food - but have bad news from work that colleagues have tested positive so mood is pretty low and CBA - would`ve loved some sugar to perk me up but resisted !

Brunch - fried eggs, streaky bacon
Dinner - sausage and veg casserole

5 pints of water Grin and some pork scratchings in the afternoon, surprised I felt snacky as I normally do well on eggs - prob boredom!

Keep going everyone - it`ll only get easier !

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 15/10/2020 20:41

Is this the recipe for cauliflour mash which has been mentioned? Everyone seems to rave about it so wanted to give it a go, it's different to how I've been making it.

Well... I kinda get this (it's a Scots thing), but what with pretty being in the big shiny city, and me being, er, not... I tend to get dead pheasants, a heap of firewood, a big poky stick for the leaves on the roof, and yesterday, a new squirrel trap.

All good low carb stuff.

prettybird · 15/10/2020 20:46

Supper tonight was a yummy shallot and leek frittata. Used 6 eggs, 2 banana shallots and two leeks (and Parmesan); dh and I have had a third each so I have a third for a snack tomorrow Smile
