Jan '20 - Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Ready for Bootcamp Light?

Welcome to the third week of Low Carb Bootcamp. As always, log your weigh-in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you're happy with Bootcamp then you can choose to stick with it. Or if you want to relax a little and incorporate some fruit, nuts/seeds and dark chocolate then check out the Bootcamp Light rule changes on this thread and in the next post. Or you can do a hybrid: Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

It's really common for weight loss to stop briefly around weeks 3-5, some people even gain a little weight. Google "week 3 stall" and you will see post after post from people on Atkins, Fast800, keto, after bariatric surgery all asking why they haven't lost weight this week. The simple answer is that you are losing fat but retaining water. The stall will last a week or two and then your weight loss will resume its bumpy path downwards.

I've attached a typical weight loss graph which shows a brief stall at week 4. As you can see, weight loss is not linear; it varies from week to week but the overall trend (shown by the black line) is ever downwards hence our saying that "the trend is your friend." If you follow the rules you can expect an average weight loss of 0.5 to 2lb per week.

@MrsBertBibby I had a mooch around FatFace recently and they had a couple of nice things, or WhiteStuff

sheepysheep · 27/01/2020 14:46

No weigh in for me today as I’m travelling and forgot to weigh myself on Saturday morning...

The plane journeys were ok - just left the spuds in the first meal and managed to avoid the worst bits of the Virgin mile high afternoon tea! I just ate the salmon and cream cheese sandwich filling and the clotted cream - got a couple of strange looks but 🤷‍♀️ My boss hoovered what I didn’t eat! The lounge food was surprisingly good and included a kale Caesar salad. I’m going to make that when I get home! Second plane I completely avoided food as it was packets of biscuits / crisps. And I’ve snagged a self catering flat rather than a hotel room so called in at the supermarket on the way from the airport last night - had buttery mushrooms, salmon, scrambled egg and spinach for breakfast. The service stations in the States do lovely customised salad bowls so that’s lunch sorted ... and dinner will be fine as there are lots of fish restaurants around. So hopefully I should be able to stay on track this week...

Sorry to hear some of you are having a shit time Flowers

bibliomania · 27/01/2020 14:59

Thanks BIWI!

PseudoBadger · 27/01/2020 16:15

Had a quick glance at scales and looks like a v small gain. This is very annoying. I can only hope it’s down to TOTM and my hypothyroid meaning that weight loss isn’t progressing as expected. Trying not to be disheartened as I’ve been so faithful to the rules.

Mandelinka · 27/01/2020 16:21

my condolences Pink, I’m sure your dad would’ve been proud if you for making changes to your eating. Nothing beats prevention!

Only 1lb down (3 in total), it’s ok. I’ve started exercising in late December (3-4 times a week, either Shred or jog around the park), I can see more definition to my body, scales are not really moving, so I assume muscles must be happening instead.

I think I'll stick with full bootcamp for at least another week. I’m planning to have my first glass of alcohol this year on the weekend ( prob vodka w soda or spritzer). I usually miss both fruit and wine in BC, not this time.

Food:
B: green tea, coffee ( I’ve started to limit my gt and c intake to 2 a day )
L: mackerel w cream cheese, celery sticks, egg, mayo, chives mashed together, with salad.
D: more fish, oven baked w butter, celeriac mash, spinach. Will make double quantity to have enough for my lunch
W: cucumber water, tea, hopefully 2.5L at the end of the day.

CheddarGorgeous · 27/01/2020 16:21

Pink - look after yourself Thanks

I thought this day was going to be a mess but I'm making it through.

B - 2 boiled eggs at 11am
L - the inside of a sweet chilli chicken sandwich at 3.15pm
D - chicken casserole and FLGV

Snacks - some almonds and an apple

Water - at least 2 litres already

I've been exhausted and stressed and surrounded by loads of cakes and pastries and managed not to eat any of them. This is unheard of for me Grin I'm determined to get back on track.

Well done everyone for KOKO through another week, especially those who have done so through some tough times.

Pretty much STS same although I've been lower during the week. Didn't drink enough water on the weekend, which I'm sure didn't help, plus some slip-ups, but, as per my post on the last thread, minor slip-ups have been accompanied by lots of wins, where I've kept trying and haven't fallen into that trap of 'now I've had that I might as well eat everything', so I'm pressing on.

Yesterday:
B/L - cold sausages and creamy coffee on a countryside walk with some friends. (I did not eat any of the hm banana bread I'd brought for the kids)
D - Roast chicken with skin, sprouts & artichoke blue cheese bake, cauliflower & broccoli cheese, hm gravy and hm stuffing balls (I did not eat the roast potatoes and parsnips or carrots)
Got some leftover chicken which I'm really excited about making into a version of the very popular alfredo recipe later in the week!

Today
B - creamy coffee
L - salami, boiled eggs, avocado, salad leaves, cucumber, mayonnaise
D - Tandoori lamb steaks with spicy roasted cauliflower, maybe some spinach

millymaid · 27/01/2020 16:38

Sorry about your Dad Pink.

Is anyone else noticing an improvement in their mood and ability to sleep? I'm doing dry Jan too, so it might be that.

MaureenMLove · 27/01/2020 16:53

Doing OK. Such a breeze to have made all my week day dinners in advance and frozen! I've had lasagne with courgette as the pasta sheets, chilli, with cauliflower rice, roasted chicken with noodles and chicken curry.

Can't wait to get into my new house at the weekend and get the fridge full of lovely stuff.

No weight loss this week, but that was to be expected.

Mandelinka · 27/01/2020 17:05

I’m after a pancake recipe please

venusandmars · 27/01/2020 17:20

CheddarGorgeous one of the things that I like about this woe is the all or nothing approach to cakes and pastries. There's no attempt to have 'just a little bit' and then quite a few other little bits I just know to avoid it completely. Well done for resisting when you're stressed and tired. And it's good to know that the sugar / insulin response would have only left you feeling more exhausted a couple of hours later.

BrassicaBabe · 27/01/2020 17:53

@Mandelinka pancakes. 3 eggs. 55g of philly cheese and 1tblespn artificial sweetener beginning with E. whizz up and then leave for 5 mins to settle. I serve with more sweetener, lime juice and melted butter. I love them

Harveywoo · 27/01/2020 18:06

Congrats to everyone, whether you’ve lost or not, we’re still here.
B: ff yoghurt, cream tsp flax seeds and 2 strawberries (I’ve moved to BC Lite bit of loss doesn’t continue I’ll shift back)
L: lo-dough pizza with garlic oil, mozzarella, salami, shallot and chilli, side of rocket with garlic mayo
D: roast turkey with cauliflower (butter and mayo) with LC scone type thing made from mozzarella, cream cheese, almond flour, egg and psillium husk with rosemary and sesame seed on top. Heavenly warm with butter but too much so, may be best if I don’t make these too often! I’d like to say I only had one but it would be a complete lie...

sheepysheep · 27/01/2020 18:39

Good job we are on boot camp light... I’m working on a strawberry farm this week. I have just walked the fields and eaten rather a lot of them... and they are enormous...

PseudoBadger · 27/01/2020 18:41

Where are you Sheepy?

Teapotdespot · 27/01/2020 18:54

I’ve just weighed myself because I was bummed out this morning after gaining 4lbs in the past week despite sticking to it (lost 11 the week before and it’s shark week/ BC dreaded week 3 so loads of reasons why) and I’m 1.2lbs lighter than I was just this morning, so I’m reassured it’s likely mostly water and I’m still losing fat Smile

Has anyone else suddenly got TONS of hair?? I have quite fine hair but a big head so quite a lot of it, although the past 5 years it’s been thinning a lot (PCOS again, it’s a delight it really is). I’m only 29 so it’s bothered me a lot for a couple of years. The thinning was starting to get noticeable on my crown and around my hairline. However, I suddenly have a very thick mane of hair that I’m extremely pleased with Grin No idea where it’s come from, but I’m not brushing out nearly as much of it In the mornings and it’s growing a lot quicker too. Only thing that’s changed is my diet, so I’m assuming it’s something to do with better hormone regulation and lower androgen production?

sheepysheep · 27/01/2020 18:54

pseudo I’m in Florida. Sadly it’s cloudy and grey and rained all last night. So much like home just slightly warmer! I have strawberry bloat now, rather regretting my overindulgence

waspfig · 27/01/2020 19:07

Wow such a lot of wins, big and small, today. Having read the entire thread in one go I noticed again and again people saying that although they hadn't been perfect, they had changed their usual pattern of behaviour - this is fantastic progress people!! KOKO

So I'm 2lb down at the weigh in which is a relief as I had gained mid week. I am bang on 12 which was my mini goal so I'm super pleased!

Stressful day doing a 5hr round trip to visit my grandad in hospital so food not perfect but made sure to have a decent breakfast to set me up right.

B scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
L hot smoked salmon and sun dried tomatoes (all I could get in hospital that was vaguely LC)
S leftover pork rarebit, babybel in the car
D not at all hungry, feel very bloated. Poss have a herbal tea and handful of nuts

Any tips for keeping the bowels moving? I'm not going very often at the moment! Which is surprising with all the water!

Doilooklikeatourist · 27/01/2020 19:10

B not hungry ( still have awful cough , and felt rough and chesty and didn’t want to eat )
L courgette and broccoli soup
D leftover roast chicken , with spinach , mushrooms , leftover cauli cheese ( DH had potatoes with his )

House to ourselves again now , as DD has gone to Spain for 3 months ( though I’m sure she’ll be home a few times ,) this makes it a bit easier to meal plan as she is veggy , so I can just do low carb for me , and add carbs for DH

@Rayna37, the first time I ordered shallots from the greengrocer , they were about the size of peas , and I swore ,never again ( then I found them prepared and frozen in Tesco 👍)

Lionsleepstonight · 27/01/2020 19:22

TheClitterati it's so weird. I weigh daily so the varience feels more pronounced! I've got to remember too, overall I've lost 6lb in two weeks, which I'd have snapped your hand off for at the start.

I'm sticking to it too, as my skin is better, hair less oily and my frozen shoulder pain has reduced dramatically.

Oh, and I can bend over so much easier!

SayrraT · 27/01/2020 19:44

Very quick log on for me. Down 2lbs so very pleased as I had my family over at the weekend. Some wine was drunk but I still mostly stuck to LC.

Well done to everyone who lost and to those that didn't just KOKO.

StuntNun · 27/01/2020 19:53

Mandelinka I like the I Breathe I'm Hungry pancake recipe..*

Remind yourself of this every single fecking day. I get it—we all want it gone NOW—but seriously, we need to check that impulsive desire because, in my case, it’s what led me to the bread & booze that I just HAD to have. I WANT IT NOW!!!

Well, no, because I’m not a toddler. I’m a grown woman who has made some bad choices and has had life thrown at her full force. It happens.

It is so important to me that we all recognise this not as a quick fix but as a Way of Eating. There will be mistakes, events, etc. Of course.

Just remember this is a life change, a new habit—we shun sugar and we eat real food, and we enjoy delicious meals, and we move, and are active, and we take care of ourselves because we are worth it.

Oh, and I can bend over so much easier!

50+ pounds down and I’m finding movement a pleasure. Sometimes I put away dishes in the bottom cupboard while simultaneously performing a “slut drop.” (With genuine apologies to Feminism—I couldn’t think of an easier way to communicate the motion.)

CheddarGorgeous · 27/01/2020 19:58

Thanks @venusandmars Smile I surprised myself with my willpower. I know myself and one bite would lead to 10!

ShagMeRiggins · 27/01/2020 20:21

By the way, I can’t possibly be the only one who read about the Caesar salad with kale and wanted to shout “Kale, Caesar!” complete with salute?!
