Jan '20 - Week 3 Low Carb Bootcamp - Ready for Bootcamp Light?

Welcome to the third week of Low Carb Bootcamp. As always, log your weigh-in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you're happy with Bootcamp then you can choose to stick with it. Or if you want to relax a little and incorporate some fruit, nuts/seeds and dark chocolate then check out the Bootcamp Light rule changes on this thread and in the next post. Or you can do a hybrid: Bootcamp during the week, and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

It's really common for weight loss to stop briefly around weeks 3-5, some people even gain a little weight. Google "week 3 stall" and you will see post after post from people on Atkins, Fast800, keto, after bariatric surgery all asking why they haven't lost weight this week. The simple answer is that you are losing fat but retaining water. The stall will last a week or two and then your weight loss will resume its bumpy path downwards.

I've attached a typical weight loss graph which shows a brief stall at week 4. As you can see, weight loss is not linear; it varies from week to week but the overall trend (shown by the black line) is ever downwards hence our saying that "the trend is your friend." If you follow the rules you can expect an average weight loss of 0.5 to 2lb per week.

Very pleased to be able to justify my disdain of kale. I've tried with it, I really have, but whereas I love a leek, embrace the broccoli, kale is just the duty visit to the unpleasant relative.

BrassicaBabe · 28/01/2020 11:27

Bollox! I'm having a MASSIVE bowl of kale crisps for lunch (kale, oil, salt). Am I going to die?!!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 28/01/2020 11:45

Killer kale strikes. Sad

Goodbye, brassica, I'll miss you. Sad

bibliomania · 28/01/2020 11:50

I eat loads of kale crisps, smothered in oil and paprika, and I'm still alive, Brassica.

ShagMeRiggins · 28/01/2020 12:47

Whoa! Never intended to diss kale—I bloody love the stuff fried in butter to a crisp, almost-but-not-quite Cajun style. It’s my Go To veg!

I was just reacting to the raw kale information, which has been thoroughly explained here—it’s fine as long as it’s washed very well. I know I can’t be arsed to wash it well so will swerve until I can be arsed. Would actually like to try the Kale, Caesar! Salad as I’m sure it will be infinitely better for me than Romaine. The darker the better, yes?

Rshard JLo is excellent dishwasher music. As is Beyonce, particularly the Lemonade album.

Right—another lunch of tuna mayo on salad (ironically, romaine today) with lots of lovely fatty EVOO, then more work. Had clients today, now comes the wonderful admin follow-up. The joys of one’s own business.

WATER Y’ALL!!!

All hail the cooked Kale. But must admit I’m not a big fan either and I stank the house out when I tried to make kale crisps at the weekend...
B- cheese string and pepparami
L- smoked salmon trimmings whizzed with cream cheese on cucumber slices with a dollop of mushed avocado on top. Delicious!
D- instant pot butter chicken, cauliflower rice and broccoli
Tried the montezumas 100% choc and genuinely couldn’t eat more than a square- I was not a fan. But really like the Sainsbury’s taste the difference 85%. It comes in individually wrapped 25g bars within the box and is 4.2g carb per 25g (16.8g per 100)

@Elpheba 😍

TheClitterati · 28/01/2020 13:42

I'm going to need to make a LC butter chicken soon!!

I am a fan of kale - DD age 12 knowing informs me (after hours of you tubing) that you can make kale crips
Anyone else have a tween who is constantly thinking their parents were born yesterday? bless her :)

ShagMeRiggins · 28/01/2020 13:51

Is that WATER, MrsBert? Grin

Rshard · 28/01/2020 13:54

I will pass on that recommendation shagme, conveniently the dishwasher will be in action tonight.

👍 mrsbert

Your lunch looks lovely elpheba

MrsBertBibby · 28/01/2020 13:57

It is water and I have chugged the lot.

And put the biscuits in my bag for the boy. He bloody loves those biscuits.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 28/01/2020 14:40

Doesn't look like water to me

Clitterati, not tweens, but I have arrived at the age where 20 something's lecture me on the use of plastics, with added emphasis if they worry my presumed hearing aid isn't picking them up Hmm

I was attending UN COPs at their age, grumble grumble...

B: 1 creamy coffee
L: chicken, leek, mushroom, garlic, baked creme fraiche extravaganza
D: probably more of the above. should finish it below it goes off and i follow Brassica to death by food poisoning.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 28/01/2020 14:42

below = before

In my world.

TheClitterati · 28/01/2020 15:03

oh the joy of ** Grin

prettybird · 28/01/2020 15:05

I was going to ask what the "slut dishwasher drop" was Wink - but now I know Grin

Forgot to actually record my weight yesterday: after getting to 11st 6.25lb on Sunday, I was back up to 11st 7.25lb yesterday after our Burns Supper on Sunday night and the haggis Wink and oats in the cranachan Wink and all the wine Blush so STS.

Went to rugby training again last night and enjoyed it and didn't disgrace myself. Staved my pinky a wee bit catching the ball though - first injury! Grin (Have a committee meeting on Wednesday so can't go then). Might actually be tempted as far as playing in the "development" 2nd 15 Shock Haven't done any real contact yet though - need to find a gum shield that fits as the one I bought is too big for my small mouth. (Might try one of the Junior sizes).

sheepysheep · 28/01/2020 16:50

Oh no I’m feeling like I may be on the Kale Marketing Board’s assassination list after this!

Just to clarify it’s absolute fine if you cook it - it’s raw kale that is potentially concerning. Also just because something has a lot of bugs on it in lab tests doesn’t mean it is going to do you harm. After all we ourselves are covered in commensal bacteria. Bacteria can be beneficial as well as harmful and most don’t really do anything. But given that kale is grown outdoors / exposed to shitting birds and in close proximity to the soil then there is a possibility of contamination with something nasty.

I do agree though - kale does seem to be one of those obligation foods you feel you should like but don’t. I did have an idea for a new kale thing recently though I’ve not tried it yet - I want to make crispy oven kale chip things with wasabi powder and sesame oil on. The inspiration is those itsu seaweed thins. They are absolutely gorgeous but the amount of packaging and the price are a bit off putting!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 28/01/2020 17:23

See? Knew they were no good - kale even has an Assassination Department.

Agree about the itsu - they're lovely but... all that air and plastic! Keen to hear how the experiment goes though.

StuntNun · 28/01/2020 17:56

Teapot peeing like a racehorse can mean a whoosh is on the way. Send the Whoosh Fairy round to mine after she visits you, please.

I've had a shitty day quite literally, the wonders of small children so I have cheered myself up with raspberries and clotted cream

Knew they were no good - kale even has an Assassination Department. You kill me, Athelstane

sheepy your information about kale has been very useful, actually! And for those who don’t love it, keep trying variations. It’s incredibly good for you and all four of my Hormoaners love it. Even the one who won’t eat fruit, including tomato. Hmm

StuntNun (though I started to prefer Stungun) I hope tomorrow is literally less shitty.

Harveywoo · 28/01/2020 18:36

Farewell @BrassicaBabe!
B: scrambled egg
L: crayfish, egg, mayo salad
Snack: olives and a few walnuts
D: roast chicken, FLGV, baby corn and one of my eggy almond flour scone things
Just realised that’s egg at every meal!
VERY hungry today, unusually so and felt light headed at work, may be TOTM arriving and will use that as an excuse for 20g dark choc later!
