Jan '20 - Week 2 Low Carb Bootcamp - How did you do?

We've already seen some fab results, especially from those who started early. We do expect a big variation in the first weigh in. Some of you will have lost several pounds, some a more modest loss. Others won't have lost anything yet either because some healing is needed before weight loss begins in earnest, or because they didn't quite manage to stick to the rules during the first week.

So please check in with us to reflect on how your first week has gone. Try not to compare yourself to others because weight loss is a very individual thing. If you have any concerns about your progress then please do ask. We have had thousands of people through Bootcamp so make use of that collective experience.

Add your weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or tag the rather wonderful ShagMeRiggins with your weigh-in if you can't access the spreadsheet yourself. If you're only just starting then please tag the very lovely AthelstaneTheUnready to be added to the spreadsheet. And to anybody that suspected they couldn't lose weight while eating lots of lovely food, and without feeling hungry... I hope you enjoyed being proved wrong!

You're right Pascal it is harder to drink water this time of year than in the summer. Have you ever tried hot water in a mug? I drink that while I'm working to keep me warm at my desk and avoid having too much caffeine. With regard to the specific amount you should drink, it's really a "how long is a piece of string" question. Drinking plenty of fluid will definitely help with weight loss and 2 litres per day is an absolute minimum. However there are so many other factors as well. Clearly if you're in a warm environment you need more water than when it's cold. If you're exercising you need more than if you're sitting still. If you eat something salty you'll need more water. Apart from thirst there are a few signs that you need to drink more water:

  1. Constipation
  2. Bloating
  3. Feeling thirsty and needing to pee at the same time, especially at night time. This sometimes happens if you're drinking large quantities of water at once, i.e. downing a pint of water, rather than sipping it throughout the day. The water hits your system too fast to all be absorbed.

Remember as well that drinking a lot of water causes you to lose electrolytes. If you're feeling faint, dizzy or tired then a salty drink such as bouillon or miso will help. I always recommend my homemade electrolyte drink of a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon juice in your water. You can also buy electrolyte tablets (warning they contain artificial sweeteners), electrolyte powder or electrolyte drops. An easy way to tell if you need more electrolytes is to put a pinch or crystal of salt on your tongue. If it doesn't taste as salty as usual then you need more electrolytes.

Thanks BIWI, will take a look. Trying not to get too disheartened as I had been so good, including the OH sulking as he was trying really hard to help, but had to stop him mid bechamel sauce for an otherwise pasta free/OK fish lasagne and picked out the butternut from something else after he thought that was ok/what's the difference from pumpkin Confused. More water, less dairy and even more broccoli for me it seems may be needed.

StuntNun · 20/01/2020 09:59

More cheering for Harveywoo, Discontented, Choclips, Notwatching, Monty, Cheddar, Cherries, Waspfig, Rayna, Athelstane and Truelove

Don't fret Rodez as you're in week 3. You're probably still losing fat but it just isn't showing on the scales yet. Do you eat fish? You could have tinned sardines for the calcium. Otherwise plenty of leafy green veg and if you're on to Bootcamp Light then almonds are also a good source of calcium.

Oh no Silver get back on the wagon and watch out for carb cravings as a result of the carb-age.

Phew I think I'm finally caught up. Another mug of hot water for me and back to work!

Thank you @StuntNun for the warm welcome. Actually can I ask for my name on the spreadsheet to be OptimisticSix @AthelstaneTheUnready? Sorry not sure what happened with my last post.

I weighed in this morning at 148lbs, I'm not sure what I've lost as I didn't do a starting weight Hmm I feel better already though, except I am itching all over and so tired from a very itchy sleepless night. I had a Google and it seems this can happen with ketosis, so any ideas on how to get it to stop, it's awful! Anything appreciated Sad

OptimisticSix · 20/01/2020 10:16

Still name change fail, this is the right one!

StuntNun · 20/01/2020 10:20

That's keto itch Optimisic you might want to move on to Bootcamp Light as increasing your carb intake will stop the itching.

Thanks @StuntNun, I don't remember getting this at all last time although that was a long time ago. Will look at boot camp light xxx

AthelstaneTheUnready · 20/01/2020 10:31

potato shmotato, Optim Grin have changed it for you.

Just under a stone to go for me - interim goal is under 9 1/2 (nearly there!), then 9, then under 9, then 8 1/2. I usually blow up on the course around 9, so need to do something different this time to get all the way there.

NSVs though: beautiful (for me) skin, lovely lovely sleep, a general desire to give the world a hug (carbs most definitely mood-altering like alcohol - everything's great for an hour until it suddenly isn't), and a rediscovered like for pottering around in the kitchen making different things.

HouseTornado · 20/01/2020 10:43

Ooooo I like the hot water idea! I tend to bolt my water, so sipping it like a coffee is a stunning idea! Thanks StuntNun.

Is it ok to add lemon or lime slices? Fresh, obvs.

OptimisticSix · 20/01/2020 10:54

Thanks @AthelstaneTheUnready Flowers

NumbersStation · 20/01/2020 10:58

I am having egg in a cup with butter and a slice of bacon.

Insalata caprese with avocado

Broccoli cheese and a bit of chicken.

@AthelstaneTheUnready

If possible could you please make me be a ‘100’ starter? I probably need to lose 90 of them Sad. Many thanks.

Onwards and upwards. Or downwards! Smile

TheClitterati · 20/01/2020 11:00

Um so I've lost 18 pounds!! If I hadn't recently replaced the batteries in my scales I would be getting new ones. I did weigh myself several times as that is over a stone.

The only place I notice it is collar bones & boobs, though thinking about it my jeans weren't quite so snug when I wore them over the weekend even though they were freshly washed.

I didn't break a single rule, I drank the water, and ate to plan. I'm shocked and giddy to be honest. My biggest struggle with any form of weightloss is the numbers and what they do to my head - so while I am delighted IT WORKS, I don't want to get too carried away with them. I had my period last week too and always weight a bit less at the end of that. I don;t think I have this must of a first week loss ever and actually haven't lost more than 4 pounds in first week of any "diet" in over 20 years.

Buts obvs I am very happy.

I've made a 1 ltr flask of herbal tea to sit with at my desk, and am starting a new habit of everytime I go into the kitchen I knock back a small glass of water.

Well done everyone! Looking forward to week 2!

CheddarGorgeous · 20/01/2020 11:04

Add me to the list of shortarses. Means that even a small amount of extra weight turns me into a little round ball Grin

AthelstaneTheUnready · 20/01/2020 11:08

no problem Numbers! Remind me if you're recording a loss today, or have just started?

AthelstaneTheUnready · 20/01/2020 11:10

Well done Clitterati! Another natural low carber Grin

TheClitterati · 20/01/2020 11:17

@MsAwesomeDragon now you mention it I am also a lot less farty since I've been off carbs and lentils

My IBS is fine too - but this WOE is VERY similar to the month I did last year eating basically protein and veg. Interestingly though I stuck to it very well (sugar on just one day out of 30), & my IBS improved dramatically, I was shocked that I didn't lose any weight at all. Of course it was fairly light on fat. Adding the fat & really upping the water seems to make a world of difference.

TheClitterati · 20/01/2020 11:20

you might be right Athel - eating like this does feel really good & learning about insulin resistance rung every bell in the neighbourhood for me.

I have also been going to bed much earlier than usual - I'm not more tired, just more inclined to listen to by body telling me "its time for bed".

NumbersStation · 20/01/2020 11:23

@AthelstaneTheUnready

Thank you for your helpSmile

Just starting today thank you.

SilverSnowCake · 20/01/2020 11:54

Well done Clitterati!

'Breakfast' on the run has been a jar of cockles and a packet of Itsu seaweed thins.

Will make up for this by having roast pork belly wrapped in gem lettuce and mayonnaise for lunch.

Goal is 4.5l water for today plus herbal tea (camomile)

bibliomania · 20/01/2020 12:01

Another one struggling to drink the water. I went out for an 11-mile country walk yesterday, but didn't fancy peeing al fresco so didn't drink as much water as I should.

On the bright side, I did roast a pork belly which will last for a few meals. I couldn't get hold of celeriac but found some samphire which went down well with tinned sardines.

1stMrsF · 20/01/2020 12:24

Morning losers Grin Really exciting to hear about so much success - lots of big losses but also people enjoying this WOE and seeing NSVs.

Only a small loss this week for me after a planned deviation for a trip to Brussels with DH this weekend, which I had booked before the BC start date was published. I felt it was better to start last week and have the weekend off rather than wait to start this week. I think that by doing so the impact was reduced (I did drink some beer and eat some chips and bread, but I did not eat any chocolate, waffles or cake). I'm also pleased that I've got back into some good habits, especially making good choices at school lunch and drinking the water. Now that the trip is over, it's full steam ahead!

Short term goal - get back into 12s
Medium term goal - lowest weight from last year 12st4lbs
Long term goal - 3st weightloss in total 11st 10lbs

B - creamy coffee
L - slim pickings in the canteen today as it's Mac&Cheese so I've brought ham and ff Philadelphia and will fill up a plate with salad.
D - roast chicken legs inc skin, with creamy, cheesy bacon & sprout bake on the side (I've posted the recipe)

I'm finding herbal tea is good for boosting my liquid intake in this cold weather.

prettybird · 20/01/2020 12:37

Quite a lot to report but for the moment will just log a small loss of a pound (I'm 2 weeks in) to 11st 7.5lb. I was 11st 6.5lb yesterday Hmm, which meant I was back to where I'd got to 4 weeks ago before Christmas (and 8.5lb down since I started Boot Camp 2 weeks ago Grin) Smile but I've decided since I'm now in the dreaded Week 3, I'll not give myself too hard a "start" weight, so that I can still hopefully log a drop next week.

Summery1 · 20/01/2020 12:54

Hi all.

I've added some weights to the SoF.
I lost 2.8lbs. This brings me to 156.8. I finished May BC plateaued at 157 so this is good. But I weighed 157 the week before BC started, then 159.6 last Monday morning. I suspect it was the Christmas chocolate finally landed. Blush
Part of me thinks it's a .2lb weight loss!

Still a loss is a loss, and closer to my target of 150lbs.

@1stMrsF I was away for the weekend too. Not exactly a disaster, but some things I wouldn't have had at home.

Today I need to shop and plan for the week. Off to the butcher I go.

BTW I see people having Butternut Squash soup - is this allowed?

Also rereading the rules this morning doesn't allow sausages for the first 2 weeks.

One more week of strict BC. KOKO.

1Wildheartsease · 20/01/2020 13:13

2lb down for me which was very cheering. (I'm a slow loser and also a long-termer. This is the end of my second week of bootcamp this time)

I weighed on Friday and didn't seem to have lost anything this week ... so (despite all previous experience of fluctuations exactly this) felt a bit down over the weekend. (Broken down car and broken down dishwasher just added to the low!)

I thought about falling off the wagon but I do find the food and drink on this WOE comforting. Anyway, I had some great recipes to try, so didn't. (Was a bit grumpy though - sorry Wildheart-DH)

Last night's mediterranean-bake was very sunny:

-Celeriac, garlic cloves, and shallots roasted in goose-fat for 20 mins at 200C;
-added halved lemon, few cherry tomatoes smoked paprika, salt, oregano happy chicken thighs with skin, chorizo slices - 30 mins more ;

  • added chopped green pepper and courgette and green olives for 10 mins.

A little chopped parsley made it look very restaurant and no-one but me realised they were eating roast celeriac rather than roast potato.

TheClitterati · 20/01/2020 13:16

I still haven't found a celeriac!
