Jan '20 - Week 2 Low Carb Bootcamp - How did you do?

We've already seen some fab results, especially from those who started early. We do expect a big variation in the first weigh in. Some of you will have lost several pounds, some a more modest loss. Others won't have lost anything yet either because some healing is needed before weight loss begins in earnest, or because they didn't quite manage to stick to the rules during the first week.

So please check in with us to reflect on how your first week has gone. Try not to compare yourself to others because weight loss is a very individual thing. If you have any concerns about your progress then please do ask. We have had thousands of people through Bootcamp so make use of that collective experience.

Add your weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or tag the rather wonderful ShagMeRiggins with your weigh-in if you can't access the spreadsheet yourself. If you're only just starting then please tag the very lovely AthelstaneTheUnready to be added to the spreadsheet. And to anybody that suspected they couldn't lose weight while eating lots of lovely food, and without feeling hungry... I hope you enjoyed being proved wrong!

Morning everyone Smile

It's my birthday today and my period just started so I decided to make myself something different for breakfast.

BOOTCAMP LITE ALERT

I decided to try some low carb pancakes. They were pretty good and around 1.5g carbs each (I had 2 and a bit).

1 egg
100g almond flour
100g mascarpone (the recipe said cream cheese)
Some vanilla/cinnamon powder

Blend all together and fry in butter.

I just had them topped with butter but whipped cream and berries would be delicious too.

BOOTCAMP LITE ALERT OVER

L: leftover chicken wings with parmasean fine beans and turnip
D: chicken curry

Happy birthday Sayyra!

MonaChopsis · 21/01/2020 07:19

Happy birthday, Sayrra!

I lost 4 pounds last week, but that was my Monday weigh-in and on Saturday I had been down even more, so I'm really happy with that.

Am at a conference now and haven't been able to stay on plan (did an unintentional 24 hour fast trying to find some on-plan food options!! So really tried). Ended up deciding to eat what I could in moderation (limited veggie options) and get back on track tomorrow when I'm home.

MrsBertBibby · 21/01/2020 07:47

Are you vegetarian Mona? It's really hard in those situations. Especially now vegetarian has been co-opted to cover vegans, so it's a welter of grains and pulses and no cheese or egg in sight.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 21/01/2020 09:08

Happy Birthday, Sayrra!

venusandmars · 21/01/2020 09:13

Away on a work trip, so early breakfast at 6am (avocado, coffee with cream) followed by left over salad and cheese on the train. Hasten to say it was leftovers brought from home not some disgusting grazing up and down the carriages snaffling whatever other passengers have discarded!!

L & D out, but the CEO is also low carb so the options will be good.

CheddarGorgeous · 21/01/2020 09:26

I'm also on a long work day (left the house 7am, getting home 11pm) so have brought all my food with me:

B - 2 boiled eggs (I promise I didn't eat them on the train)
L - Broccoli and blue cheese soup
D - Tuna salad

Snacks - natural yoghurt with ginger, turmeric and cinnamon.

Have a great day everyone Smile

Rayna37 · 21/01/2020 09:34

1Wilma1 If you're feeling a bit queasy can you go back to basics for dinners, just plain (but fatty cuts) meat/fish with FLGV (with a bit of butter). Your dishes sound quite "fancy" Grin Dinner has been sage and onion pork with cauliflower and broccoli smothered in butter, oriental pork cabbage rolls, cottage pie, chicken foo yung Also wondering was this all home made, do you know exactly what went into it all?

Notwatchingtvtoday · 21/01/2020 10:02

Morning all, the half pound that I lost and seemed to regain for no reason over the weekend has come off again 😀 so that 4.5 lbs since last Monday.
I get an odd box too and my challenge today is to work out how I am going to use it all too. Odd box is a veg and or fruit box delivery of all the wonky misshapen or over ordered stuff that would otherwise go to landfill , it’s great and does force me out of my comfort zone occasionally with veg that I would not normally buy.

Glad that blue Monday is over and hope that any of you who are struggling have more gentle days this week. Our dog still has to wear a cone following his surgery last week and is on 15 min lead walks for another week, but even getting out for 15 mins lifted my mood yesterday, that and the smiles people tried not to display when they saw his shaved baboon like bottom.

1wilma1 if you liked the celaric soup there is no harm in having soup every day for lunch, i suspect you would naturally vary it, I really like broccoli soup as well. Hope you stop feeling sick soon.

B Greek yogurt
L scrambled eggs and avocado, will also look at some soup options
D gammon cooked in my instapot, FLGV. I always cook my husband some carbs, he has no need to loose weight and struggles to keep it on, interestingly he always loves my low carb options.

S if I need M&S rollitos, olives, cucumber with cream cheese

3 litres of water and 2 coffees each with a Tsp of double cream

TheClitterati · 21/01/2020 10:07

Happy Birthday Sayrra - those pancakes sound lush!!

Just back from the gym - first time in the gym bit since the ETI (embarassing treadmill incident) a couple of weeks ago. I had a cycle & a row (avoiding treadmill for forseeable future & I have too many pains/injurioes for that now) & then had a lovely workout on the weight machines. Aiming to do this workout 2-3 times per week with swims inbetween (shoulder injuries permitting).

Plan for today:
Creamy coffee
B - eggs & spinach
L - cos, chicken & parmesan salad - olive oil dressing
D - lamb chops & veg
Snack - kefir (full fat) and gerkin.

I'm not vegetarian but I do feel like I've eaten more meat in last 8 days than I would usually eat in half a year. Once this initial 2 weeks of bootcamp is over I will start to have some meatfree days, body permitting. I don't know if it is the meat my body is loving or the fat? Perhaps its just the rest from carbs & the insulin roundabout.

I have a cauliflower and some bone broth I need to do something with asap so will make a soup with that tonight.

TheClitterati · 21/01/2020 10:11

after being overstocked on herbal tea for years, I have nearly exhausted my supply. What are you fav herbal teas??

I like:
Nettle
Pukka Chai's - there are a few variations & I like them all.
Pukka 3 Cinnamon
Green tea but I limit that due to caffine.

I will need to get to the health food shop in town this weekend to stock up so any recommendations of ones to try appreciated.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 21/01/2020 10:31

Hi I really like tea pigs liquorice (70%) and peppermint and also M&S Aniseed, Fennel and liquorice (25%)
note from packaging
“Liquorice - people suffering from hypertension should avoid excessive consumption “

I’m not sure what excessive consumption would be, does anyone know? I don’t personally have hypertension but wanted to warn just in case some of you do.

TheClitterati · 21/01/2020 10:40

liquorice tea sounds great & I don't have hypertension so I can be excessive!! I will look out for some to try.

I'm not a fan of perppermint in herbal blends though as I find it tends to dominate every other ingredient - its a very bossy herb. I do like peppermint on its own occassionally, & just as well as often it is the only herbal on offer in a cafe.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 21/01/2020 10:54

Liquorice Tea for those who drink it

Have had a google and found a BMJ case article Hypertension induced by Liquorice tea
Hypertension induced by liquorice tea. BMJ case reports, 2015, bcr2015209926

They took an average of 30 different types of tea and found that;
“A cup of liquorice tea with a volume of 250 mL could therefore be expected to contain, on average, approximately 31.5 mg of glycyrrhizin.7

The European Scientific Committee on Food advises that regular glycyrrhizin doses of 100 mg/day present a risk to health, and advocate a safe average daily intake of no more than 10 mg/person/day. This is an amount equivalent to less than half a cup of liquorice tea”

The person the article was about was drinking 6 cups a day, she was otherwise healthy, aged 45 and had swapped to reduce her caffeine intake and thought it was a healthy switch.

I think it’s worth noting as it is very easy to switch to another kind of tea and then drink litres of the stuff, especially when you are trying to drink so much water. I’m going to switch from the teapig one to the M&S one as it has less liquorice and be careful to keep it to 1 or 2 cups a day.

I should add, I am very careful about herbal teas after my husband was admitted to A&E ( by our friend who is a doctor who came to our house to see him) after he drank too much green tea.

1stMrsF · 21/01/2020 11:33

I've just bought a selection box of Pukka teas so I can try some new ones (pictures). I've enjoyed elderberry and echinacea today (not too sweet or fruity) and feel new yesterday (very mild flavour mostly aniseed and fennel). Another fan of liquorice and mint here - it has a sweet aftertaste that is useful if you are craving something sweet after dinner.

I also try and drink a bedtime tea - I find I do sleep better when I do. I like the night time one in this box and particularly love the chamomile and lavender combination in the clipper 'snore and peace' and the sleepy time tea pictured which is a bit mintier (I buy this from amazon in bulk)

Happy birthday, Sayra!

I've had a torrid time of it this evening, up all night with a sick toddler qj

TheClitterati · 21/01/2020 11:47

I will look out for that selection 1stMrsF as it looks nice.

If you like an earthier tastine herbal tea, no caffine or anything, I do recommend nettle. It can be a bit of an acquired taste but it is safe to drink lots of - I love the Clippers one.

Mimosa1 · 21/01/2020 12:19

Oops posted too soon!

Anyway, I stuck to BC rather than falling face first into cake for energy and I'm feeling rather proud of myself.

Meals were (bc light)

B - lc bread and ham
L - beef pho w/o noodles and with extra egg, snack of almonds
D - picky bits, avocado, cheese, ham some dark choc

Very easy to eat the whole pack of almonds in one go so need to cut down in nuts a bit.

1Wildheartsease · 21/01/2020 12:34

Well done Mimosa - you are having a tough time! (Wishing your toddler well very soon.) Yes - nuts are wonderful... I usually restrict myself to the unsalted ones as the others are too easy to eat in volume.

They do make excellent emergency snacks though -especially for when I'm in a place where a (work-provided) meal is a carby-nightmare. I prefer them to the mass-produced breakfast-foods-for-meetings and they have a satisfying crunch.

1Wildheartsease · 21/01/2020 12:41

Herb teas:
Rosehip is my favourite! (Sharp and more-ish)

Red-bush tea - makes me feel bathed in African sunshine (thanks to Mma Precious Ramotswe .)

Mint teas - (I like a sprig of mint in hot water but the tea-pig bags are good) - clean taste. Useful if you feel you are eating too much between meals; the minty taste does not go with most snacks.

Lemon and ginger - perfer real lemon and real ginger to the tea-bags

Most others tried so far seem too sweet or artificial tasting.

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/01/2020 13:09

I like snore and peace too @1stMrsF
I also like the Tesco own lemon and ginger

Fallen off the wagon into cheese on toast , no excuse just bad judgement ( and DH fancied some for lunch , so I had some too )

1Wildheartsease · 21/01/2020 13:23

I did try my Christmas present: Peppermint Cannabis Tea (body and mind botanicals).

It tasted just like mint tea and was very relaxing but nothing special.

However later ont, I had a wildly beating heart - not unpleasant or painful or panic-inducing, but really odd (unless you have been running or had a spider land on your face).

It might not be the tea but I haven't tried it since (and my wildheart has remained at its usual steady pace).

TheClitterati · 21/01/2020 13:35

I like the sound of Rosehip tea & Cannabis tea.

Harveywoo · 21/01/2020 14:08

Happy birthday @ SayrraT! Thanks @Mimosa1, and sorry to hear you’ve had a ropey night, hope your little one feels better today? Hi @stuntnun weeeell small is a relative term right? I had the smaller of the 5 pieces and covered it with cream with the intention of losing some under that but cleared the plate in the end under the gaze of my brood. Compensating with well behavedness today so far though
