I thought it would be helpful to have a thread showing other low carbers/Bootcampers some low carb products that you've found. Photos, so we can spot them when we go shopping - but also photos of the nutritional data so we know how many carbs per serving they contain.

I've got two that I'm going to start the thread with, firstly Bare Naked noodles. These are made from konjac flour, and have been part of Japanese cuisine for many years. They're a brilliant replacement for noodles in stir fries or soups - and can be used instead of spaghetti (although not quite as successfully!). But they are very, very low in carbs (and calories) so can be a really useful thing to have in your cupboard. They aren't cheap though, at around £2 a pack (which will serve 2), so probably best if you're using them to make everyone else who's eating ordinary noodles/pasta!

The other thing to beware of is that when you open the packet (they're in water) they smell fishy. Rinse them well in fresh water, and that will deal with that - they really don't taste fishy.

Oops, sorry BIWI, I promise not to eat any, I desperately want to shift my weight so will stick to diet, think this is the hardest thing I have ever done as usually eat choc and guzzle wine most days, my body is freaking out! Managed not to cave yesterday even though DS and DH tucked into sausage and chips with strawberries and magnum for pud, whilst I had salad and omlette. I really appreciate your advice. Finding IF part easy as usually do this mon-fri and relax it at weekends. What is inspiring me is I put my stats into an online calculator and it showed I could lose up to 27lbs by July 17th! I know this may be unrealistic but it is helping me to focus.

SparklesAllOver · 28/05/2020 07:47

BIWI, my DS is 18 next weekend, am I allowed a bit of alcohol then?

BIWI · 28/05/2020 09:37

@pilatesmat

But for those of us who are planning to have some it is better to know there are options that are less off ideal than others

But that's my point! You shouldn't be planning on having chocolate on Bootcamp. The whole point of Bootcamp is to break the hold that sweet stuff has over us. Planning to eat chocolate will jeopardise and sabotage that completely.

Obviously it's up to you if you have it, but it's not part of Bootcamp.

Why don't you make it easier for yourself and cook the same things for all of you? There's no reason why they couldn't be eating what you're eating!

Happy birthday to your DS - absolutely that's an occasion that should be marked - and you'll be pleased to know that Champagne is probably one of the lowest carb options on the alcohol front ... Grin

(Be careful though - alcohol has much more effect on the body when you're low carbing)

I did a 800 calorie blood sugar diet for 8 weeks last spring and lost the 2 stone I needed to.

Since then I am maintaining weight by low carbing.

So for me, some chocolate is a long term way of staying healthy.

I don't drink anything but water, have taken loads of food off my menu to stay low carb, but if I took out lower carb chocolate too I'd be miserable.

I have stopped drinking any fizzy drinks as I found that crept up and up and it was simpler to just stop altogether.

I'm sure I'd be healthier without any chocolate but it's about what helps me maintain good choices long term.

So no fizzy drinks works for me. Some low carb chocolate works for me.

Different if you're on an 8 week blitz to kick start it all - but this thread seems helpful for those of us who know low carb works for the long term for us too.

BIWI · 28/05/2020 09:46

But that isn't low carb chocolate.

OP posts:
pilatesmat · 28/05/2020 10:14

Livlife bread is 3.8g of carbs per slice.

Two squares of Lindt 65% is the same.

I know it's best to hardly ever have the bread. And always better the bread than the chocolate. But sometimes being completely rigid makes the whole thing snap rather than be maintainable for life.

I'm not saying chocolate is a low carb food. It clearly isn't. I'm saying some chocolate is lower carb than others.

BIWI · 28/05/2020 12:36

I realise that @pilatesmat, but this thread is to showcase low carb products that helps us achieve Bootcamp goals.

Anyway, let's leave it there. This is obviously a distinction between low carbing in general and Bootcamp. So it may be helpful for non-Bootcampers.

Thanks, BIWI, I will be able to celebrate next week! As for cooking one thing for the whole family, I am stocked up after shopping today so all good, DH won't eat egg white, though, bizarre! But he wolfs down my meringues....Grin

I found these at the Asian supermarket today. Cooked aubergine, onion, tomato. 3.7g carbs per 100g.

They would be lovely baked with some feta and served with a green salad.

Got these at Sainsbury’s. They cook in the microwave in 2.5 minutes, so great for anyone else on rubbish accommodation / staff rooms that only have a microwave!

I’ve managed to tear off the nutritional information but it was about 1.5g carb per fillet. I had one for dinner with salad and coleslaw, and will have one cold with salad for lunch tomorrow.

I opened my pack of fiberflour today and made some flatbreads and lord I have found the holy grail.

It's 9 quid per kilo but I only used 100g flour so 90p for six lovely tender yeasty flatbreads like something from the Honey and Co cookbook. Genuinely cannot tell difference.

Am so so excited about pizza this Sunday - made with Waitrose Cooks' ingredients tomato paste in a jar which is lower carb than tinned toms or puree. Also - avoid some grated mozzarella which has potato starch added.

BIWI · 04/06/2020 22:44

Can you post pictures of the packaging, as well as of the nutritional information, please, @VitreousHumour?

apols - here they are. The lonjevity website has great recipes and the company background looks good - family business, father is anaesthesiologist, spent years developing this non-spiking flour. There's a forum with lots of recipes too including puff pastry sigh.

That does look interesting. Have you bought some? If you have, come back and let us know how it worked!

VitreousHumour · 05/06/2020 11:43

Yes, I made the flatbreads with yeast and they were indistinguishable from 'normal'. So good. I used 100g of flour which = 14g carbs and got 6 small flatbreads. A greedy person would eat 2 of those so that comes in at, say, 5g of carbs for two small ones or one big one, which feels amazing and much, I dunno, useful to me than a small slice of very flaxy bread, which I wouldn't want to eat at dinner. A Big flatbread with a huge slow-cooked shawarma and a lemon-y cabbage salad OTOH... is exactly what I want to eat at all times.

This pizza recipe is next. I'm ashamed to say that I have also bought a pasta sheet roller for the kitchenaid for about a thousand pounds, just so I can try this lasagne.

These are the things that I really miss when low carbing, so although I'm going to take it easy with fiberflour until I lose the 2 stone I put on when I looked the other way for a bit, I think this will enable me to stick with low carb as a way of life. The holy grail, truly.

VitreousHumour · 05/06/2020 11:43

Just coming back to say that the pizza was as good as any homemade pizza I've had. So not quite as good as hipster sourdough but much better than my previous efforts!

I got five small pizzas out of 500g of flour and they were surprisingly filling at14g carbs each, plus whatever you put on the toppings. We had mozz and tom sauce, plus tuna, anchovies, black olives, capers and a little red onion. Perhaps not an everyday thing but definitely doable once a week and will fill the pizza-shaped hole in my life. I'm so happy.

duletty · 14/06/2020 18:20

These are nice, very crunchy

But @duletty - what's the carb count of those? Sweetcorn is really high in carbs!

I got these puffed cheese snacks in Sainsburys. They're great if you're missing crunch and the cheese/truffle flavour is very strong with lots of umami. They do a plain version as well. The pack seemed pricey at £1 but realistically half a pack would. E plenty. They're high fat (42%), zero carb and high protein (47%).
