Week 6 - Low Carb Bootcamp - it's all downhill from here!

BIWI · 18/02/2019 08:14

Morning losers!

Here's the spreadsheet

So we start the second half of Bootcamp. By now, hopefully you're in the swing of things, and the scales and/or the tape measure are showing good results.

Keep focused. Keep your eye on what you're eating - it's all too easy to become a bit complacent, relax and let the carbs creep back in.

Keep up the water (you are drinking enough, aren't you?!) and make sure that you're eating lots of fat and getting your carbs from vegetables and salad.

But above all - good luck!

The whole ethos of Bootcamp is that you don't need to weigh or count anything! That said, calories do come into it - inevitably - so if you think your portion sizes are too big, then work on reducing them. But don't think that the way to go is to cut down on the fat! (Unless you have a problem with dairy, of course, in which case it's a good idea to cut down or out the cream, yoghurt and cheese. (Butter doesn't count as dairy)

But list out for me what you've been eating and drinking over the last few days and let me see if I can help

Maybe weight training and HIIT nowlook. I hate hate hate cardio so I do HIIT as it means it’s all over quickly.
Absolutely love weights tho and if you lift heavy you will change your shape

Siameasy · 24/02/2019 12:23

Reporting being in the 9s today-just!! 9.13.75 I’m taking it!!!

Went to a new butchers and told him I’m eating meat only for a week so I’m after fatty cuts. He was all in favour of it and turns out he and his wife swear by HFLC and he thinks fatty cuts of meat are far superior

Bought some beautiful fatty chops to start me off tomorrow

Melty · 24/02/2019 12:53

Weighed myself this morning, and for the first time in about 5 yrs, I am 17 stone something. Still a long journey to go- goal is eventually 11.5 - which I haven't been since I was 16.
Next mini target is the next 3 lbs, which will make it a 4 stone loss since last year. (started slimming world in July, lost a half stone, and then the same few lbs went on and off until October, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, and went low carb.)
I just had a very satisfying clear out of all the size 22s :) Chucked out all last summers clothes, was trying on linen trousers and shorts over my jeggings (and without opening)- that was my test to keep or get rid. Move over Marie Kondo!

I am logging my food on myfitnesspal, but honestly am not bothering about the calorie part. Just watching the carbs. I have 20-30 carbs per day.
I am eating about 1400-1600 cals per day, but if you read Jason Wong, he has a lot to say about calories. Basically means nothing really. But what does matter is insulin. And the way the body metabolises fats, protein and carbs.

nowlook · 24/02/2019 12:55

Welcome back to the 9s! @Siameasy

I had to google what HIIT is Blush

Is that something that you have to find at a gym/ PT? Might be worth throwing a bit of cash at it for four weeks...

Siameasy · 24/02/2019 13:11

nowlook well I do it on the X trainer so I’ll do 1k as fast as I can, record the time and next time I’ll push myself to try to beat it. The idea is to feel sick and like you can’t carry on but every time you do it you get a tiny tiny bit better. After that I’ll do two more k and I’ll have a rule that I must keep my speed above a certain level so that my heart rate is up and I’m struggling, legs feel dead etc. I hate cardio but I actually semi look forward to it now
But you could quite easily say plot out 500m and sprint it or even shorter distances. Some people do it between lamp posts.
One thing tho, I hurt my knee sprinting repetitive 500m on concrete which is why I use the XT.

Condamine · 24/02/2019 13:21

Thanks BIWI
I have been missing breakfast recently and doing IF.
A typical day would be 2 meals of something like ...

Lunch - 2 boiled eggs with butter or sliced ham buttered or cooked chicken with skin with a big pile of mixed leaves with olive oil. half an avocado, cucumber and a dollop of mayo.
Dinner - Roasted chicken thighs, probably 4 ( I push butter under the skin and blob bits on top) or belly pork or steak served with roasted broccoli (which I add butter on serving) , celeriac (mashed with cheese and cream) or leeks in cream etc

I made soup recently - sautéed cauliflower, leeks and celery and added grated cheese and cream on serving. I had that with some cooked chicken.

I also have 1/2 coffees with cream and probably 3/4 teas with a splash of SS milk. I was thinking the milk would be ok as its around 30ml but I can see that may be best changed to almond milk.
I am drinking at least 3.5 litres of water.

Do you think that's an enormous amount - it looks so much written down. My DH works away and the DC are at uni so I am only cooking for me so definitely eat bigger meat portions than if we were all eating together, IYSWIM!

1Wildheartsease · 24/02/2019 13:24

Well done Melty - you are on the right track.
Who is Jason Wong?

m0therofdragons · 24/02/2019 13:24

Okay, dd1's birthday party went well and I had one slice of cake. Not the smallest slice but just one despite lots of cupcakes etc.

We went for Italian and I had salmon on a bed of veg which was lovely and buttery with no carbs however portion size definitely was double what I'd usually have. Today I'm up 1lb but that's fine as I understand why (pretty obvious) and the damage could have been worse. Back on it today and will take some cakes to work so we get through them.

My parents came to visit and brought lots of eggs from their chickens so I'll be back on eggs this week after eating too many in week one and 2.

Well done those hitting the 9s. I'm back at 11 but hopefully this time next week I'll be back in the 10s. It's dh's birthday this week so we're having duck which is easy on this woe!

Siameasy · 24/02/2019 13:35

Condamine I did eat a lot at the beginning of this and thought “bloody hell” but in time I grew very aware of my appetite. I started off having three meals a day as suggested but after a few weeks I no longer needed them. And now I eat a lot less but if I exercise I am hungry! Are u missing breakfast cos you’re not hungry?
Dairy can be a right bastard - I have to avoid cream and keep cheese as a treat. It can stall weight loss and cause cravings in some people.
I think it’s like-see your body as a lab. Experiment. This is for the long haul so there will be ups and downs. Eg I’m fine with small helpings of legumes (ie every few days) for instance even tho they are prohibited.

Siameasy · 24/02/2019 13:37

Well done Melty I agree about insulin it really is the key. If only more people knew it

Condamine · 24/02/2019 13:57

Siameasy I have definitely noticed my appetite has reduced, I used to scramble 3/4 eggs and I had 3 meals religiously for the first 3 weeks.
I'm not hungry in the mornings and I never snack during the day. That's what I love about this because previously I was a constant nibbler and could easily munch my way through a packet of biscuits with a cup of tea!
I think it could be the cream and cheese, I think that's my next step really to limit it to treats.

Melty · 24/02/2019 14:12

Whoops, that would be Jason Fung.
He wrote The Obesity Code and The Diabetic code.

nowlook · 24/02/2019 14:47

@Doilooklikeatourist

Forgot to thank you for the link to cauliflower chicken alfredo...I also did it as a one pot and didn't bother parboiling the cauli (because life's too short). Added some mushrooms that were getting (but had not gotten) slimy. It was every bit as delicious as you said and did me for 3 meals this week. I even had it cold!

Recommended to anyone who is less accomplished in matters culinary and is following this woe: you can probably make it from the stuff we all seem to have in our fridges at the moment.

Condamine · 24/02/2019 15:12

Melty I've just watched his aetiology lecture. Absolutely fascinating - so many things just fell into place. The best thing being we are not incompetent failures after struggling to lose weight on reduced calorie low fat diets!

Melty · 24/02/2019 15:29

There is a lot of research out there these days.
Look up Tim Noakes and David Unwin (GP) too. Although David Unwin's work is more about diabetes.

David Unwin Low Carb Diabetes
Prof Tim Noakes used to be a big champion of high carb ,low fat, especially for athletes, but he is very open about saying he was wrong. He was reported for professional misconduct to the South African version of the GMC for promoring unprofessional dietary advice (Ie Low carb, High Fat) in a tweet. He won.

i have learnt loads since i was diagnosed.
I remember a GP telling me about 6/7 yrs ago, that most people above a certain weight who try to lose weight, fail.
I am a yo yo dieter. always managed to lose weight, but always put it back on, plus a bit more. I've been to slimming world many times.
Always went back though, because I couldn't maintain. And honestly, I never really fell off the wagon. Not completely, still did low fat, high carb, but i still kept gaining weight, and beating myself up about it.
Anyway we are where we are. Hopefully on a better journey for myself anyway!

BIWI · 24/02/2019 15:38

@nowlook HIIT stands for high intensity interval training - it should only be done in short bursts. this might help give you a better idea

@Condamine those portions sound OK - possibly a bit large? I would probably only have 2 chicken thighs, but obviously it depends on their size. But I agree with @Siameasy, I suspect it could be dairy that's not helping you. I'd try going for a few days without cream or cheese and see how you get on.

@Melty - well done! And it feels great when you clear stuff out of the wardrobe, doesn't it?! Star

ShagMeRiggins · 24/02/2019 15:54

@Siameasy, I’m confused about your ‘nothing but meat’ for a week. Perhaps I missed a post where you explained what this entails and what benefit you hope to gain? I’ve never heard of such a thing! (And how will you poo?)

Condamine · 24/02/2019 15:55

Thanks BIWI - I will adjust my protein portions and leave off the dairy.

Melty - I am an old slimming worlder too. Dread to calculate how much money I wasted. Will have a look at the two you recommended, thanks

Siameasy · 24/02/2019 16:37

Well Shag I cannot resist an experiment and a challenge. My boss is also doing this WOE and reading Taubes and Groves we saw that many humans ate only meat and were very healthy. So we did a bit of reading about it and came up with the idea.
I hope to lose some fat and build muscle (I do weights at the gym).
I also hope to try some offal
Plus it is liberating thinking - “what’s for dinner. Two pork chops”. No sodding about with sides, garnishes etc
As for the 💩 I’ve no idea but I don’t go much on this diet despite loving my veg. However I’m not constipated I just dont seem to go much I’m not sure why. I do have an injury from childbirth so it could be that. so maybe I won’t go at all now lol if I could also stop pissing it would help😂

nowlook · 24/02/2019 16:53

*NEW SNACK ALERT!
*

Just found The Curator's Pork Puffs in my local Sainsbury's.

They are the blessed love child of a pork scratching (flavour) and a quaver (texture).

Bit of salt and vinegar seasoning.

0.28g carbs per bag.

They are wonderful and I commend them to this House!

These are they (but I had a 25g bag)

nowlook · 24/02/2019 17:12

Sorry, my link not working, but trust me: they're ace.

I've just ordered 16 bags from Amazon (8!salt and vinegar; 8 spicy barbecue) for £12.

StuntNun · 24/02/2019 17:12

Siameasy I think you're our first Bootcamper to try the carnivore diet. I tend towards "dirty" carnivore which is predominantly animal products but not strict. I like veggies too much to give them up entirely. If you have any questions about carnivore (sometimes called zero carb) then please do ask me. I stumbled across it by accident while trying to combine LCHF with cutting out eggs, dairy, soya and coconut while breastfeeding my allergic DS4. I couldn't even have butter which was pretty dispiriting.

Mandelinka · 24/02/2019 17:16

Back from our lovely holiday to Egypt. As expected, went off plan and sampled many different local dishes ( including deserts ). And quite few pina coladas on the beach.
I’m drawing a line and starting afresh tomorrow. I’m sure I’ve gained few lbs so may not weigh myself tomorrow and concentrate on getting into my routine instead.

Regarding the excercise, I’ve done the Shred on/off for about a year, mainly the 1st level which I enjoy the most. I know it’s a hard work but after day 3/4 it really gets easier and within 2 weeks I can always see a difference in my shape. I’ve downloaded few other JM excercise vids on Amazon Prime and anothe favourite one is 10 minutes transformations. Not an easy one, but the sessions are only 10 mins plus warm up and include Pilates, cardio, boxing etc.
Btw well done everyone for all the Kokoing !
