The final weigh-in - Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 23/07/2018 07:42

Good morning all, for the final Monday of this Bootcamp.

Here's the spreadsheet for its last outing!

I hope very much that the last ten weeks have been successful for everyone - whether that's on the scales, seeing your clothes fit better, better health and general enjoyment of your food!

I'll keep this chat thread going, and when it's full, will start another one until we start the next Bootcamp, which will start in mid-October.

Congratulations, m0therofdragons and prettybird

I so agree with what bingenomore wrote about insulin resistance - I know I'm very insulin-resistant and very carb sensitive due to the calculations I have to make for my insulin injections (type 1 diabetes). I went on a DAFNE course to learn how to calculate and they couldn't believe how high my blood sugar went after a set number of grams of carbs, and how much insulin I had to take to counteract it - we're talking four or five times what the theory said it should (and what most of the others on the course could happily abide by). It's scary to think back at how much of my weight problems over the years must have been due to some of this, all the following the NHS advice to eat carbs at every meal...

Anyway, now I've seen the light and I won't be going back to the old ways, no matter what. And I'll definitely be KOKOing with the best of them until the next BC and weighing in weekly (erm, that'll be daily, I think). I'm 10.10, but my target has always been 10stone, so I'm looking at those last 10lbs and it would be very satisfying to see them gone by the end of August, which will be a year since I started on the new me. Longer than I'd planned, admittedly, but never mind.

Rshard · 25/07/2018 15:35

Well done to m0ther and prettybird! Also to bingenomore, very impressive!

colouringinagain · 25/07/2018 16:14

Some brilliant losses! V encouraging Grin

So this is today's menu:
B yeo valley natural Greek style yog (which is 5g carb per 100, bit more than pure Greek yog, but ok?) Tea with milk
L 2 fried eggs, 2 rashers back bacon, handful spinach leaves. Coffee with milk
D burger on big mushroom, some French beans

Have now bought cream for coffee.

What do you recommend as alternative to coconut oil to fry with?

Drinking loads water either plain, or with slice of lime (same slice all day!) Or from carafe with raspberry and Apple teabag in. I'm finding just a hint of flavour makes it so much more refreshing in this heat...

prettybird · 25/07/2018 16:21

Why not coconut oil? The KTC brand (available in big supermarkets in the ethnic aisle) is good value and doesn't taste of coconut Smile

Otherwise, I use EVOO or duck fat left over from the Lidl duck breasts (one of my favourite meals - and one that both dh and ds like).

ilovecherries · 25/07/2018 16:23

A miracle has happened. I weighed after my run this morning, and I was 11.2. Having seen 11.4 on the scale every morning for three sodding months, I got off and on about 4 times, moved the scale, switched it off and on etc. But it seems to be correct. At last! Keeping the faith has been hard lately.

prettybird · 25/07/2018 16:28

That's only because I was catching up with you again ilovecherries Grin

Congratulations on breaking your long stall Flowers

colouringinagain · 25/07/2018 16:29

Ah thanks prettybird I haven't spotted that one. Back to the shops for that and cream cheese!

colouringinagain · 25/07/2018 16:31

Good scales (not too £££) recommendation?

I usually weigh myself after breakfast (lighter than bedtime Hmm). Is there a best time ?

Amazing news, I can imagine how happy you are today!

I seem to have found a new weight to he stuck at, but it's 4-5lbs less than my last sticking point. Good incentive not to go off plan camping this weekend. I have other low carb people with me, so no excuses. May need to buy more low carb stuff tomorrow though as DH has decided to join me so I'll need enough for both of us.

Gammeldragz · 25/07/2018 16:37

Colouring the Omron ones I've had for 8 years have been very reliable. The body fat function is possibly not accurate but it is consistent. Has option of stones and pounds, kg or pounds with a decimal which I use.

I bet you feel like your feet aren't touching the ground today - that's brilliant news. Maybe that'll unclog the whoosh you deserve!

Laska5772 · 25/07/2018 16:41

Great news cherries Smile
Ive really stuck to LC this week , but seem to be suffering from the runs.. dont feel ill ,..

The heat maybe? or perhaps its because the cat has had to kept in as he has been having tests and i've had to clean litter boxes.. (but ive been v careful ..)

boldlygoingsomewhere · 25/07/2018 16:55

Laksa, I think there is some type of stomach bug doing the rounds. DD’s nursery has been affected and we’ve all had a bit of tummy trouble - cramps and mild diarrhoea.

ilovecherries, well done on breaking the stall! Woohoo!

NSV for me today - I can do up a pair of shorts that 3 weeks ago I struggled with. They are still a little tight but progress is being made. Smile

Twoo · 25/07/2018 17:07

Congratulations Mother’ on your new job and Pretty’ on your losses.

I wholeheartedly agree with your post re:- insulin resistance abbey’

I have to watch my carb intake .... who knew you CAN have too many sprouts and too much kale. Portion control all the way for me to be able to make progress.

LeapinLizards · 25/07/2018 17:33

Hooray for you @ilovecherries. It's been a long time coming but you've had a mini whoosh! Star

colouringinagain · 25/07/2018 17:38

Thanks Gammel off online shopping now to distract from the urge to eat biscuits!

Do people use apps like myfitnesspal? Is it easy to track carbs on it?

Rshard · 25/07/2018 17:51

Hip hip hooray ilovecherries

prettybird · 25/07/2018 18:04

Sone people do use myfitnesspal but there are some important caveats

  1. Counting/logging carbs is discouraged as the whole point about this WoE is that it is supposed to be easy and to encourage a healthy attitude to food. If you're following the Rules, you shouldn't need to count carbs.
  1. It's very easy to get unhealthily obsessive. Some people find it triggering (see also "Calorie Counting")
  1. The data in myfitnesspal needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. The information is "crowd completed" and there is also confusion between the US and UK system of counting fibre and carbs which can add to the discrepancies.
Destinysdaughter · 25/07/2018 20:17

Not been on here for a while but so great to hear about personal successes of everyone. I started this on 2 Jan at 11stone 12 and am now 9 stone 12, which is brilliant! I don't really want to lose any more weight as I'm happy with my weight now and also it really doesn't suit my face being thin, so am slowly introducing healthy carbs back into my diet and carefully monitoring my weight to make sure it's not going in the wrong direction. Seems to be ok so far, has been mainly things like brown rice, a few crackers, whole meal pasta, peas, carrots, beans, beetroot etc. Feel v proud of myself for sticking to it for so long so thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread for all the support and great ideas! 💜

bingenomore · 25/07/2018 22:33

Doing cartwheels around the room on hearing Cherries news ! Its about time those pounds pissed off- an inspiration for those of us who are stalling. Ive been gloating with all the compliments i've received about staying on plan whilst camping . I still can't believe it myself-its so unlike me. I can't decide whether my behaviour is because I'm feeling happy because I'm low-carbing or I'm low carbing cos I'm happy. I think low-carbing makes me happy - its certainly bolstered me through some difficult times recently. As for insulin resistance ( IR ) I do get a bit peed off when I hear of people having a few carbs here and there but managing to lose whereas some us stack it on if we walk past a chip shop. There are some claims that you can help IR by Intermittent Fasting . I tried 5:2 before and was successful for a few months before sliding into Intermittent Bingeing followed by Incessant Bingeing, However now I have turned in to a new person I might try and throw in a couple of fast days a week just until my next holiday in 3 weeks time, First fast day is tomorrow - long day at work so won't be near the fridge.
Any other stallers care to join me ? I found that the missing breakfast one (14:8 ? ) made bugger all difference and the only thing that shifted the pounds was to fast from one supper time until the next.

StuntNun · 26/07/2018 06:58

Colouring I have heard good things about Cron-O-Meterr* as an alternative to MyFitnessPal since it is designed to track micronutrient intake as well as calories and macros.

Fantastic news Cherries I'm sure you'll see a continued drop over time now. Long stalls like yours do seem to happen when you're near goal, where your body finds a weight it likes and doesn't want to leave. Well done on keeping the faith.

Rayna37 · 26/07/2018 07:55

Fabulous news cherries Star

Colouringin coconut oil is brilliant, especially for doing meat for spicy dishes, or cauli rice. Otherwise just butter with maybe a tiny dash of olive oil to stop it burning. I also use ghee which is great, I think I found my tin in a large supermarket (with the Indian dry stuff not the fridge/butter section). If I'm frying (sautéing?) green veg, just lovely butter.

My last couple of sets of scales have been from the dreaded Weight Watchers: digital, bought in Argos; good and not over complicated.

I'm back down to 124.6 so still a couple of lbs off my lowest and just under 10lbs to goal. Next interim goal is 120 but I will also celebrate anything under 122.8 as a new lowest weight. Quiet weekend apart from (another) beer festival with food tomorrow so should keep on track.

ilovecherries · 26/07/2018 08:36

That 2lbs is still gone this morning :). What a relief!

BIWI · 26/07/2018 08:49

@colouringinagain the best - and only! - time to weigh is first thing in the morning, naked and after you've been to the loo. If you're weighing after breakfast, all you're doing is weighing yourself plus the food and drink you've consumed Smile

m0therofdragons · 26/07/2018 08:58

I'm curious. How much weight had you lost when people began to notice?

I've lost 11lbs and can notice a big difference myself but I'm slim on top (arms and across collar bone etc) with weight on my hips, tummy and thighs. A line dresses hide this so I'm not surprised no one has noticed (plus colleagues next to me are size 6 so probably still think I'm huge Grin)
