Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half

Morning all.

A very early start to this week's chat thread, as I'm 8 hours ahead of the UK right now.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness one more time

Hopefully by now, low carbing is starting to become a habit rather than a hardship. We're out of the dreaded weeks 4 & 4, so for those who haven't seen much movement on the scales, things should start to get going again now (although don't expect to see huge losses from here on - around 1-2lbs a week is a normal and healthy rate of loss)

For those who aren't seeing any movement in the bathroom Grin make sure you're eating plenty of fat - see how you can find ways to add more fat to your diet. Similarly water. And look at what you're eating, and be sure that you're getting your carbs in the main from veg and salad.

I have noticed that there's a fair bit of slippage cheating starting to creep in, and I'm calling you all on that! Remember that this isn't an especially forgiving way of eating, and if you cheat, you won't lose!

But good luck for the rest of the week

I failed in my quest to eat a proper dinner, we have a party tomorrow to celebrate my birthday, lots of family & friends coming for an early BBQ but I'm also out all day with an early start.

I managed to make cookies and not eat any but also made a massive bowl of remoulade, red cabbage coleslaw, Parmesan crisps and mini fathead pizza bases.

I did have a bowl of yogurt, some cheese and a creamy coffee.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 16/06/2018 07:29

My own observations lead me to trust Stunt when she talks about hormones being involved in weight management, not just the mathematics of calories in/calories out. I've dropped 2lbs this morning, and I knew something was coming because I had period-like effects yesterday:
sad and clumsy, with the most enormous red bump spot on my chin.

Today will be:
B: creamy coffee and a bit of kefir
L: tuna mayonnaise (and butter) with lettuce, celery, bit of tomato
D: leeks and broccoli in butter, pork shoulder

BIWI · 16/06/2018 07:35

It was a complete revelation to me some years ago, when I suddenly realised that hunger isn't about having an empty stomach (at least not in the wealthy Western world), but it's about your hormones.

Insulin, grehlin and leptin are the key hormones involved, and low carbing helps to keep these balanced, rather than constantly rising and peaking. Once they're in balance (homeostasis I think it's called) this keeps our appetite under control.

@StuntNun will, I'm sure, have more knowledge about this, but this is my understanding of it!

BIWI · 16/06/2018 07:42

There's a really interesting article about leptin and grehlin here which I really suggest you read.

It also talks about why we put weight back on after we diet, and also how to stop this.

Down 1.5lbs in an early weigh in today. Hope it sticks for Monday but it's also giving me motivation not to stray at a kids bday party today! Lolo everyone.

StuntNun · 16/06/2018 08:12

I find explain the hormonal side of weight gain/loss really well.

Mimosa1 · 16/06/2018 08:18

Ahem koko

Lonesurvivor · 16/06/2018 08:24

Thanks for the article and clip, they make such sense. It's good to know the science behind what we're doing. For me that really helps if I'm having a hard week.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 16/06/2018 08:29

Very interesting article BIWI. it never occurred to me that men and women have a completely difference response to hormones and a completely different biom to make these differences. i wonder if any of this account for why men find weight loss easier? Perhaps our particular food issues at this time effect women more then men so men can deal with it better?

Iamnotacerealkiller · 16/06/2018 08:33

Ive got my half lb off this morning so saw that glorious 12st at the beginning of the scale even if it is 12st 13.8lb lol.

That's the first time ive seen that 12 since this time last year and now for the first time in ages starting to think im not enormous and getting used to the fact i'm no longer pregnant. May go and try on some old clothes as lots will fit now i should think.

KOKO!

MrsBertBibby · 16/06/2018 08:49

A very ill deserved loss on top of yesterday's low weight, no doubt dehydration after all that boozing (although I did drink buckets of water before and after). I ate little of my snacks in the end, the meeting ran over the party so my plan of a quiet scoff on a bench by the Thames never happened as I was frogmarched from the Temple to Bankside at an astonishing pace. And then joined the orgy of drinking, gossiping, bitching and wild indiscretion that is the chambers summer party.

So, 13st 3 3/4 today. Very nearly a stone and a half since I started this woe in April. Very pleased. Felt so much more comfortable out socialising than I have done in a while!

prettybird · 16/06/2018 09:57

I've just made a sugar free meringue (to roll into a roulade with cream and berries). It - along with the standard pavlova - is in the oven at the moment.

I added some cinnamon to the recipe because I love cinnamon - I'll let you know how it turns out! Smile

I now have 10 egg yolks and one whole egg in a Tupperware container (broke the yolk on my 10th egg - fortunately I am now sensible and do them into a separate bowl). Ds is going to have very rich scrambled eggs in preparation for his rugby game today! Grin

Mandate · 16/06/2018 10:50

I am down to 82.6 - which is the lowest I have been in 10 years Grin (having reached around 105kg while pregnant with twins.....). And is 100 grams away from being into the 12-stones - I am chuffed!

DH and I have a treat meal every Saturday - it used to be pizza every time, but I have been on the search for tasty and low carb options. This cobb salad is a favourite for both of us - takes quite a long time to prepare, but is totally delicious: smittenkitchen.com/2010/04/classic-cobb-salad/

@MrsBertBibby well done for staying so strong in the face of canapes!

@Twoo and @lovelycupofteas frustrating not to be losing, KOKO and hopefully things will shift again soon.

@Seafour sounds like you have loads of excellent LC options for your bbq, hopefully you will get the chance to eat more today!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 16/06/2018 11:12

@Mandate

If you want to keep your pizza on saturdays why not make a low carb version?

I use Phyllum husks, mozerella, egg and ground almonds to make a kind of quick bread that works well as a pizza base. it also is very helpful if you are having...um...movement issues....iykwim. its all the fibre.

Proportions are 3rd cup almonds full cup grated mozzerella (the pre-grated bagged kind) two table spoons phyllum husk, one egg and a flat teaspoon of baking powder.

mix all ingredients and splodge out onto a baking sheet on baking paper in two side plate sized circles about half an inch thick.

bake for about 15mins at 180 or until it starts to brown.

take out and add topping as you would a pizza, i usually just add raw tomatoes onion and mozerella.

It also works well as garlic bread by brushing garlic butter over it midway.

qumquat · 16/06/2018 11:22

Upping my fat seems to have really worked for me. I'm much less hungry now I'm eating double cream by the spoonful Blush and I've lost 3lb since Tuesday! I love this woe!

Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half
Itchyknees · 16/06/2018 11:53

Morning all! I’ve dropped a jeans size, my tops skim over my hips instead of clinging and my joints feel a lot better.

Itchyknees · 16/06/2018 11:59

I’ve also only lost half a pound this week but got my period this morning so that usually speeds things up again. Still that’s a massive 17lb in total! Grin

BIWI · 16/06/2018 13:47

Please can I ask a favour? If you post a recipe on the chat thread, please could you copy it and also PST it on the recipe threads? (They're stickied in the Bootcamp topic)
Thanks

1.6lbs up this morning for no apparent reason, though my measurements are down so, whatever...

Made a lovely cheesey Leek thing last night, to go with gammon. I cooked Leeks in butter, stirred in soft cheese, mozzarella, cheddar and Parmesan. It was gorgeous and I had similar for brunch today with Courgette added (no mozzarella as I'd run out). Lovely way to eat veg.

Seafour · 16/06/2018 15:29

Would anyone like to adopt my eldest ds? His life is a disaster and he still thinks I'm there to mop up his problems - adoption, sell him on eBay or offer him as a raffle prize????? So many options.

I just want to eat chocolate, cheesecake, crackers but I haven't

B duck egg with butter, creamy coffee
L hard boiled egg, celery, cucumber & mayo
D BBQ in the rain - the only rainy day in June it would appear.

Ho hum.....koko campers

Laska5772 · 16/06/2018 18:49

I am here walking away from the gin and tonic!! Hmm

Waswittyonce · 16/06/2018 19:27

@Iamnotacerealkiller
Your pizza looks yummy. I watched enviously while DP tucked into one today while we were out for lunch while I ploughed my way through a limp salad Sad
Where do you buy phyllum husks from, if you don't mind me asking Smile

Waswittyonce · 16/06/2018 19:28

Ps, congratulations on the 3lb loss! Smile

Iamnotacerealkiller · 16/06/2018 19:37

@Waswittyonce

I buy mine from amazon. Make sure you get the ones that actually look like a seed husk not the powdered stuff...will see if I can find a link..awkward on my phone...here
